New Sunday Morning Bible Study: aitlyn Jenner, school bathrooms, the Supreme ourt decision, transgender, gay rights, non-binary: the issues of human sexuality are front and center on the American stage, and the church cannot remain silent. How do we respond to our cousin who announces that he's gay and wants to know that we're ok with it? How do we respond to those who vilify the church as hate-filled and homophobic? How do we respond with compassion to the Orlando shooting without having our response confused as approval? Beginning TODAY, September 11 th, we will be starting a new Sunday morning Bible Study called, Speaking the truth in love: a hristian's guide to the issues of sexuality. During this study, we'll review what the Bible has to say about all this, familiarize ourselves with the modern perspective on sexuality, and address how we can respond to friends and family members, hot-button issues, and the slogans that we encounter every day. So join us this fall as we endeavor to better speak the truth in love. Music Groups begin Rehearsing again in September! At Glory of hrist the pastor typically makes announcements after the service. So the service just starts at the appropriate time without a specific welcome. (The welcome actually occurs in the service itself when the pastor says The Lord be with you and the congregation responds.) To follow the service you should turn to the page indicated at the top of your bulletin insert. This week the page is 151. Usually we simply work through the service interrupting the process for the singing of hymns, certain prayers and the scripture readings. The prayers are usually printed in the service folder as are the Scripture readings. Hymns are found in the latter half of the Service book. If you are having trouble following the service, you can ask someone nearby and they will help you. You can also comfort yourself with the knowledge that almost everyone has a little trouble following the service the first time through. It gets easier. Worship Notes Seventeenth Sunday After Pentecost Acts 2:14, 22-47 Pentecost to Plymouth In your upbringing, did you hear the expression going to church? Or did you ever hear the expression, Gathering together with the risen hrist and His hurch to receive His gifts of forgiveness and life? The latter is how we understand the Divine Service. The Gospel isn t just history! It is history; the beautiful, gracious history of God s undeserved love in hrist. And it s so much more! For the hrist of history is also the hrist of this hour. He still lives! And He s still present with His gifts to feed His hurch with His Word and His Meal. That s why the center of the hurch s life is worship! That s also why worship among us is called the Divine Service (Gottesdienst). In worship, God is present to serve us with His lifegiving and life-sustaining gifts of forgiveness. We also respond in prayer and praise, but the beating heart of worship is God serving us with forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation through Word and Meal. hristian worship then is table fellowship with God. The risen hrist is present to give us His Word to hear and His very Body and Blood to eat and drink. Here, something different happens from what happens anywhere else in the world. Here, the Bridegroom is present to serve His Bride the food and drink of heaven. This is the center of life! The Holy Spirit led the early church to draw her life from the gifts of the risen hrist. Acts 2:42 says, And they devoted themselves to the Apostles doctrine and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. The word devoted means that hristians were into these gifts with all of their strength (steadfastly). The proclamation of the apostles doctrine and the Lord s Supper (breaking of bread) were the gifts at the heart of the hurch s fellowship. Their fellowship in the receiving of Word and Sacrament was formed by the prayers - plural. In other words, there was a liturgy, an ordered way of worship, when hrist came to serve them. The Liturgy that you will participate in through weekly worship has been passed down through the centuries of the hurch. The Liturgy today connects us to the hurch catholic, the worshiping hurch of all time and people God grant us receptive ears and mouths to receive life itself- Word and Meal! INTROIT Ps. 30:2 5; antiphon: Ps. 30:11a, 12b SERVIE OF THE WORD You have turned for me my mourning into dancing;* O LORD my God, I will give thanks to you for- ever! O LORD my God, I cried to you for help,* and you have healed me. O LORD, you have brought up my soul from Sheol;* you restored me to life from among those who go down to the pit. Sing praises to the LORD, O you his saints,* and give thanks to his holy name. For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime.* Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning. Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the be- ginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen. You have turned for me my mourning into dancing;* O LORD my God, I will give thanks to you for- ever! KYRIE page 152 HYMN OF PRAISE Gloria in Excelsis page 154 SALUTATION page 156 OLLET Lord Jesus, You are the Good Shepherd, without whom nothing is secure. Rescue and preserve us that we may not be lost forever but follow You, rejoicing in the way that leads to eternal life; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. OLD TESTAMENT READING Ezekiel 34:11 24 11 For thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I, I myself will search for my sheep and will seek them out. 12 As a shepherd seeks out his flock when he is among his sheep that have been scattered, so will I seek out my sheep, and I will rescue them from all places where they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. 13 And I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land. And I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the ravines, and in all the inhabited places of the country. 14 I will feed them with good pasture, and on the mountain heights of Israel shall be their grazing land.

There they shall lie down in good grazing land, and on rich pasture they shall feed on the mountains of Israel. 15 I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I myself will make them lie down, declares the Lord GOD. 16 I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, and the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them in justice. 17 As for you, my flock, thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I judge between sheep and sheep, between rams and male goats. 18 Is it not enough for you to feed on the good pasture, that you must tread down with your feet the rest of your pasture; and to drink of clear water, that you must muddy the rest of the water with your feet? 19 And must my sheep eat what you have trodden with your feet, and drink what you have muddied with your feet? 20 Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD to them: Behold, I, I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. 21 Because you push with side and shoulder, and thrust at all the weak with your horns, till you have scattered them abroad, 22 I will rescue my flock; they shall no longer be a prey. And I will judge between sheep and sheep. 23 And I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd. 24 And I, the LORD, will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince among them. I am the LORD; I have spoken. A This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. EPISTLE Acts 2:14, 22-47 14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them, Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 22 Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know 23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. 25 For David says concerning him, I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken; 26 therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope. 27 For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption. 28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence. 29 Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, 31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the hrist, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. 33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. 34 For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, 35 until I make your enemies your footstool. 36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and hrist, this Jesus whom you crucified.

37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, Brothers, what shall we do? 38 And Peter said to them, Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus hrist for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself. 40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, Save yourselves from this crooked generation. 41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. 42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. A This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA and VERSE page 156 HOLY GOSPEL Luke 15:1 10 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the fifteenth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. 1 Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear [Jesus]. 2 And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, This man receives sinners and eats with them. 3 So he told them this parable: 4 What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? 5 And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6 And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost. 7 Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. 8 Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it? 9 And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost. 10 Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents. Alone and apart from hrist, I am a sinner. But in my Lord Jesus hrist and with him, I am no sinner. I firmly believe that he has destroyed all my sins with his precious blood. The sign of this is that I am baptized, cleansed by God s word, and declared absolved and freed from all my sins. In the sacrament of the true body and blood of my Lord Jesus hrist, I have received as a sure sign of grace, the forgiveness of sins. This he has won and accomplished for me by the shedding of his precious blood. For this I thank him in eternity. Amen.
