180 GCU Prospectus 2015 Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies Introduction The Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies is one of the oldest departments of GCU. Dr. G.W. Leitner, an Orientalist, Professor of Arabic and the first Principal of Government College, Lahore founded the department in 1864. In 2005, a 4- Years Degree Programme was introduced as a Major Subject. The Department acquired the Postgraduate status after launching MPhil in Islamic Studies in 2010. PhD Programme in Islamic Studies has been started in 201. A 2 Years Programme in Islamic Studies is being Lauched in 2015Eminent Scholars like Prof. Noor Bakhsh, Dr. Pir Muhammad Hassan, Prof Sheikh InayatUllah, Prof. Abdul Qayyum, Dr. A.S. Agha, Dr. Zia-ul- Haq Sufi, Dr. S.M. Zaman, Dr. Baha-ul-HaqRana, Prof. Rafi UllahShihab, Prof. Imtiaz Ahmad Saeed, Dr. Khurshid-ul-Hassan Rizvi and Prof. Khan Muhammad Chawala have given their best to the department. The Department aims at realizing the long cherished dream of striking a balance between the pristine values of Islam as outlined in the Holy Qur'an and the Sunnah, and the practical challenges of modern times. We try to cultivate a spirit of dispassionate research bringing about chisled minds firm in belief but endowed with tolerance without, of course, being apologetic. The highly qualified academicians have been engaged to focus on achieving excellence in education and research and contributing to the intellectual, cultural and social development of the institution.

The research scholars may join any one according to their interest. These groups are: l Uloom ul Qur'an wa Tafseer l Hadith and Seerah l Fiqh wa Uloom-ul-Fiqh l Muslim thoughts and civilization l Arabic Language and Literature Facilities There is a rich collection of the old and latest books on all topics of Islamic Studies in Arabic, Urdu and English which are available in Central Library. Special Features l The Department publishes Journal of Islamic Research in which research papers on all disciplines of Islamic Studies are published. l The two active societies of the Department Majlis-e-Uloom-e-Islamiyah and Arabic Society are providing creative and literary pursuits to the students. l The seminars and conferences are organized regularly in which national and international scholars deliver lectures. l The department also offers a Certificate course in Arabic Language. l The Department has pride in introducing the subject of Ethics for Non-Muslims students. l The Department has acquired the services of a Distinguished Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies.
