OUTLINE NOTES CONDENSED I. INTRODUCTION TO THE TABERNACLE The Temple was founded in 966 BC. It was part of seven years in building, and when complete the ark was moved into the Temple (1 Kings 8). The time occupied in the construction of the tabernacle was about seven months. It was (11) eleven months and (15) fifteen days from the exodus to the setting up of the tabernacle Different Variations on its Name Terms Used to Describe it o the tabernacle of testimony o the tent of the testimony o the tabernacle of witness o the tent of the congregation o the sanctuary o and the tabernacle of the congregation Colors & Metals of the Tabernacle White pictures Christ s righteousness, purity, light Blue represents faithfulness; heavenly nature Scarlet pictures the ransom sacrifice of Jesus Purple pictures royalty; speaks of Christ s kingly power and dignity Gold pictures the divine nature which God possesses; deity Silver pictures truth; redemption Brass speaks of the judgment of God II. PURPOSE OF THE TABERNACLE 1. Exodus 25:8 2. Sacrificial System: means God made it possible for a sinful people to draw near to Him, to receive His grace and blessing, without desecrating His holiness and so incurring His wrath against them. 3. Three Reasons Why Necessary: define Israel s obedience to God, to unify them as a nation, and to bring organization to their daily life 4. Hebrews 8:5 5. Illustrated Sermon on Three Subjects: Who God is (what s He like); How we access Him and; How we worship Him III. THE PLAN AND ARRANGEMENT Arranged in the form of a cross; it is God s revelation of the process that leads us deeper into His presence; about how to approach and honor God through worship; they are the sounds, the smells, and the feel of sin and sacrifice 1. The Court: The focus was on sacrifice, judgment and cleansing A. Entering In: (Psalm 100:4) an attitude of gratitude B. The Altar of Burnt Sacrifices/The Brazen Altar (Exodus 27:1-8) i. Three Things About God: God was always ready to accept their offering for sins, that He was always ready and anxious to forgive, and that He would never turn away a repentant sinner 2

ii. Our Responses to the Altar: full submission to the lordship of Christ which leads us to obedience to His truth C. The Brazen Laver (Exodus 30:18-21; 38:8) i. Two Things it Reveals: the truth about ourselves and what God really looks like; 2 Corinthians 3:18 ii. Represents the Word of God: It is only by a continual study of the Word that we can keep clean hands before the Lord and walk in a way that pleases Him. Psalms 24:3-4; Psalms 119:105 2. The Holy Place A. The Table of Shewbread/The Bread of the Presence (Exodus 25:23-29) i. Intimacy: The Hebrew words behind it are lechem, which simply means bread, and paniym, which means face. Showbread is literally translated bread of face. the table is where God institutes the ministry of face time; it is, expressing your love for Him by maintaining a deep, personal relationship with Him ii. Communion: The word commune means to share an experience together. It is ongoing, a way of living; it is literally fellowshipping with Jesus through the sharing of His sufferings B. The Candlestick/The Golden Lampstand (Exodus 25:31-37) C. The Altar of Incense/The Golden Altar (Exodus 30:1-9, 34-38) i. Hebrews 7:25 ii. Romans 8:34 iii. Psalm 141:2 3. The Most Holy Place A. The Ark of the Covenant (Exodus 25:10-22) i. Three Aspects of Jesus Life and Person: Rod: resurrection power; manna: God s provision through Christ, the Bread of Life who was provided for the salvation of the world; ten commandments: character and requirements of God s holiness ii. Romans 3:25 B. Hebrew kabowd for glory means the heaviness of God s splendor IV. SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE 1. Ministry of Christ: The Showbread (Christ the bread of Life), the Lampstand (Christ the light of the world) and the Altar of Incense (Christ our intercessor). It was made from gold, silver and wood representing the deity, redemption and the humanity of Christ. It pictures Jesus as the truth and in terms of salvation it represents our need of sanctification as we walk in this life with Christ as our life and bread. 2. Hebrews 10:20 3. Colossians 2:17 4. John 1:14 3
