SACRIFICIAL GIVING January 7,..$ 7,405 Our weekly goal...$ 10,500 Thank you for your support. Father Mecca Please remember St. Peter Parish when preparing your will. A legacy to the church eases your tax burden and helps continue the good works of our parish. We offer our condolences to the family of Jacqueline Carboni who passed away last week By the time you arrive for mass this weekend we will have taken down all the Christmas decorations. As you must experience at home, it is fun and rewarding to put them up but not to take them down and clean up. We do the take down in stages because it is just too much to tackle at once. For both projects, I thank the volunteers for their helping hands: Jennifer Light, Alan Light, Mary Ellen Cesca, Jean Nadeau, Barbara Talarico, Josephine Scalzo, Brenda Farrah, and Rose LoStocco. I heard many compliments from parishioners and visitors. Our decorators and I never know how big the plants will be. We were surprised just how large they were. The plants in the ten inch pots were as large as those in 12 inch pots have been. We conjecture that the warm autumn pushed their growth. No matter in what size or shape that the holiday flowers come in, our decorators make our church look stunning. I need also to acknowledge and thank Michael Halas and his staff for hand making all of the wreaths we enjoy in the church as well as for putting them and the roping up. We have returned to Ordinary Time. Ordinary Time will be quite short at this end of the year and much longer come the end of May because Lent begins are you ready? in one month from today, February 14 th. When I walked into the rectory after having been home, there were boxes stacked in the entrance with bright yellow labels boldly reading, Lent. The copies of the Lenten edition of The Word Among Us had arrived already. Before beginning this column, I opened the diocesan email to see what was transmitted from the chancery. One of the emails was from the Bishop s Office concerning Lent. Give us a break! The special seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter, focus our attention upon critical dimensions of one mystery our Lord s Incarnation, his Passion and death, his Resurrection which are so central to our faith that we give them special attention. These great mysteries are, of course, always part and parcel of our weekly Sunday celebration when the Christian community remembers how we have been redeemed by God through Jesus life, death, and Resurrection. We read from St. John s Gospel today. On the Sunday after Epiphany in each of the three cycles, we read a passage about Jesus early public appearance. Next week, we will begin with Mark s Gospel. Cycle B, which we are in this year, is the year of St. Mark. (In Cycle A the Gospel comes from St. Matthew and in Cycle C from St. Luke) During the weeks prior to Lent, our Gospels will all come from Mark s first chapter. Once we have completed the Sunday celebrations of the Most Holy Trinity and Corpus Christi, we will pick up with St. Mark s third chapter, finishing at chapter 13 in November.

My thoughts are that it might be of interest to you to use some of the space here in these weeks to give you some information about the author of this Gospel and of his Gospel itself. In doing so, I will refresh my memory and perhaps offer us both some new insights. Winter is making itself felt this year. I have made a decision concerning weekday Masses when the weather delivers snow and ice. Commencing Monday, January 8, we will follow school delays for the 7:30 a.m. Mass. Therefore, to be clear, if Danbury schools are delayed, Mass will be at 9 a.m. If schools are closed, we will have Mass at 9:00 a.m. My reasoning for this policy is this: we have a lot of sidewalks, parking lot, and stairs to clean and to make safe. I will not cancel weekday Masses except in those cases, like this past Thursday at noon, when the snow is falling hard and it is clearly unsafe and unwise to travel. If on a Saturday there is snow or ice, we will take an hour delay and have Mass at 8:30 a.m. THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YOUTH MINISTRY The Junior (Gr. 6-8) & Senior (Gr. 9-12) Youth Groups meet from 7:00 to 8:30 pm in the St. Peter School Gym once a month.
