(page 1) Zacchaeus Meets Jesus WHAT S THE POINT? God s generosity is endless. He is a loving father who wants to give good things to His children. He gives without expecting anything in return. His supply never runs out. He faithfully provides for our needs and often blesses us with more than we deserve. BIBLE CONNECTION Luke 19:1-10 (page 1136) CHARACTER WORD Generosity - An unselfish attitude, willing to share with others TEACHING OBJECTIVE I can show generosity to others because God is generous to me. MEMORY LINK Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. (KBC Study Bible pg. 1030) SUPPLIES NEEDED THIS WEEK GET CONNECTED None MEMORY LINK ACTIVITY Option 1: index cards Option 2: flashlight, Bibles BIBLE CONNECTION Play money, family photo SURF TEAM LEADER Memory link cards, index cards, pens, Hang 10 pages MAKE-IT-STICK REVIEW GAME Option 1: play money with only one $20 bill, envelopes Option 2: paint stir stick, sponge ball, cups How should we respond to God s generosity? By our thankfulness to Him and our generous living toward others. When we are generous to others, we reflect the generosity of God. Yes, God wants us to be generous with our money, but generous living involves much more than our stuff. People recognize Christ followers by the fruit we show in our lives. The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23). As we become more like Jesus, we bear more fruit, which we are to generously give away to others. What does it look like to be generous in giving love? Or to give kindness generously? Imagine the difference it could make if we decided to give generously in every area of life. That would truly reflect God s generosity toward us, wouldn t it? GET CONNECTED Building relationships in Surf Teams; introducing today s lesson No supplies needed Use the following conversation prompts to get to know the kids in your Surf Team and to introduce today s lesson. Today s story is about a person who was short and had to climb a tree to see. What things are difficult for you because you are still a kid and not fully grown? Today s character word is generosity. What does generosity mean? Greed is the opposite of generosity. Describe a greedy person. Tell about a time someone was generous to you. Tell about a time you gave generously to someone else. How can you be generous with things other than money or stuff? (Time, talents, friendship, kindness, helpfulness) Guide clubbers to locate and mark today s Bible Connection and Memory Link in their Bibles so they can find the pages quickly as directed in the session. Worship Tip Worship is designed to bring kids focus toward God. It is the responsibility of the worship leader to narrow the kids attention, help them focus completely on God and prepare their hearts to hear from God. Be intentional when you prepare the order of worship songs. Choose highenergy songs first then transition to quieter worship music.

MEMORY LINK Teach a Bible verse to clubbers; help them memorize the verse Flashlight Focus on the Bible Ask kids to hold their Bibles high in the air. Count how many kids remembered to bring their Bibles. Explain that today s story is in the New Testament and included in a gospel book, Luke, which means it s a story about Jesus. Guide the kids to recite gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John). Instruct kids to open their KBC Study Bibles to Matthew, the first book of the New Testament (page 1023). Guide them to turn a few pages to the right to Matthew 5:16 (page 1030). Ask a volunteer to read the verse aloud as the others follow along. Focus on today s Memory Link Show the flashlight. Discuss with the kids what happens when a bright light shines in a dark room. Turn off the lights and shine the flashlight, being careful not to point the flashlight directly toward kids eyes. Talk about how light shines in the darkness. Point the flashlight toward today s Memory Link poster. Guide kids to read the memory link. Good works are like bright lights in the darkness. They shine brightly and glorify God. Turn on the lights. Today s character word is generosity, which is an unselfish attitude and willingness to share with others. Generosity is an example of a good deed that shines like a bright light. Think about the good deeds that God does for you. He provides for your needs. He cares for you. He forgives sin. God is generous! When you do good works for others, like being generous, you reflect the good things that God has done for you. You become a bright light to others and glorify God. (page 2) Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. (KBC Study Bible pg. 1030) Memory Link Repetition is the key! The more the kids repeat a verse the more likely they are to memorize it and hide it in their hearts. Keep repetition from becoming boring by challenging kids to repeat verses at different volumes or use different accents, such as baby, cowboy, Scooby Doo or computer voices. (More thoughts on page 34-35 of your Leadership Manual.) Option 1 - CARD MIX UP Index cards, write each word of the Memory Link on a separate index card Mix the cards so they are not in order. Instruct each surf team to sit in a circle. Place the cards out in the middle of the surf team and direct the children put them in the correct order. Repeat the activity as time permits. After a few rounds, begin removing a word card each time the activity is repeated. Alternately, you may choose to make two sets of verses for your surf team. Divide each surf team into two teams to compete against each other in putting the words in the correct order. Option 2 - CIRCLE PASS KBC Study Bibles brought by the clubbers Guide clubbers to sit in a circle. Those who brought their Bibles will hold Bibles on their laps. If every child brought a Bible, remove one to play the game. As kids recite the Memory Link, they will pass Bibles to the right. When the last word is recited, freeze and award one point to every child holding a Bible. Remove a Bible and start another round. For each round, change up the number of Bibles in play and the direction Bibles are passed. Continue play till one clubber receives 10 points or time runs out.

BIBLE CONNECTION Teaching today s character word through gospel-centered Bible story (page 3) Paper play money (Printable lesson resource), photo of your family Prepare Before the club starts choose 3 clubbers to help you. Give each one a few paper play money bills. Prepare a pocket or envelope with extra bills so that you can pay each child back four times the amount you take from them. Introduce the Story Sit on the floor in front of all the clubbers. Hold the picture of your family in a manner that makes it difficult for students in the back to see. Tell about the picture. You will notice kids straining to see the picture or complaining about not being able to see. After a few minutes hold up the picture where everyone can see it. I know that many of you could not see the photo of my family. I did that on purpose. Today you will hear about a man who was short but did something unusual in order to see Jesus. Teaching Tip When calling on kids to answer questions, don t always call on the first child who raises his hand. Kids need time to think about the answer. Wait a few seconds for several kids to raise a hand before choosing a student to share. (More thoughts on page 36 of your Leadership Manual.) Use the Bible Guide kids to open their KBC Study Bibles to Luke 19:1-10 (page 1136). Invite kids to follow along as you read the story directly from the KBC Study Bible. Today s character word is generosity. Zacchaeus was a greedy man. But when he received forgiveness from Jesus, he was changed. He stopped being greedy and started being generous. Luke 19:1-2 Before Zacchaeus met Jesus, people didn t like him. When Jesus saw Zacchaeus, he said for him to come down, that he was going to go home with Zacchaeus. The people muttered that Jesus was going home with a sinner. The reason people didn t like Zacchaeus is because he was a tax collector. Talk About It Tax collectors were people who gathered up money from people to give to the Roman government according to the law. Many tax collectors would steal some of the money they gathered from the people. Let me pretend that I am Zacchaeus. Hold out your hand to one of the children you selected before the session and say, Hi, my name is Zacchaeus. I am the tax collector and I am here to collect your taxes. Take the play money from the child. Put some of the bills in one pocket and say some for their taxes. Put the other bills in a different pocket and say and some for me! Look at the clubbers and wink. Go to the next two children and do the same thing. You see, this is why people didn t like tax collectors. Many of them stole money for themselves. Luke 19:3-7 Zacchaeus wanted to see Jesus. He climbed a tree so that he could see him. When Jesus told Zacchaeus that he wanted to stay at his house today, Zacchaeus must have been so excited. But then people began to mutter and talk under their breath. They couldn t believe that Jesus was going to be the guest of a sinner.

Luke 19:8-9 Zacchaeus took action. He stood up and said that he would give half of his possessions to the poor, and if he had cheated anybody out of anything he would pay them back four times the amount. Go back to each child, reach for the play paper money you placed in your pocket and give back four times what you stole from them. Say to each child, I am sorry for stealing from you. I am giving back four times what I took from you. This action showed that Zacchaeus was a changed man. Use the Bible Guide kids to find Luke 19:9-10 in their Bibles and discover what Jesus said after Zacchaeus promised to return everything he had stolen. Ask a volunteer to read the verses aloud. Explain salvation means to be saved or rescued. Who was saved? (Zacchaeus) What was he saved from? (sin) Who saved him from sin? (Jesus) Explain that Jesus would refer to himself as the Son of Man. Why did Jesus say he came? (To seek and to save that which was lost.) Like Zacchaeus, all people are lost and separated from God because they are born in sin. Jesus came to rescue or save people from sin and God s punishment. (page 4) Teaching Tip Involve kids as leaders as often as possible in club. There are many things kids can do such as helping check attendance, reading from the Bible, acting out a story, passing out snacks or holding a teaching prop. Giving kids jobs can help with behavior and it gives kids ownership of their club. Talk About It People who have been saved from sin and choose to follow Jesus act differently. In fact, others will be able to tell that they ve been changed. What changes took place in Zacchaeus? (He changed from being greedy to being generous.) What caused Zacchaeus to change? (Jesus saved him from sin.) Gospel Connection Just like Zacchaeus was changed through an encounter with Jesus, Jesus can change you too. He generously offers you salvation and forgiveness from sin. Jesus loves you and is ready to forgive you. If you want to receive forgiveness for your sins and be changed from the inside out, the Bible says that you must first ADMIT you are sinner and ASK Jesus to forgive your sins. You can BELIEVE that Jesus sacrifice on the cross paid the price for your sins. Finally, CHOOSE to FOLLOW Jesus by confessing Him as your Savior and making Him Lord, or boss, of your life. Invite children wanting to know more about becoming a Christian to move to the designated counseling area to meet with a leader one-on-one. Application/Transition Once a person becomes a follower of Jesus, they are changed from the inside out. Zacchaeus actions and attitudes changed from being greedy to being generous because Jesus first changed his heart. Jesus generously offered Zacchaeus forgiveness from sins and a fresh start. Jesus generously offers you forgiveness from sins and a fresh start. Gospel Tip Understanding sin is critical to understanding the need for a Savior. The Bible clearly teaches that all people are born into sin. When talking with kids about sin, help them connect the definition of sin (breaking God s rules) to their own sinful nature. Ask kids to share some of the ways they have sinned and disobeyed God. Offer hope that God provided a solution to our sin problem.

SURF TEAM TIME Connecting with kids in small groups; applying today s Bible Connection and Character Word (page 5) Memory Link Cards, Hang 10 page, Index cards, pens Gospel Connection Before you begin, ask if there are any clubbers who would like to talk with the Bible Connection Leader about praying to ask Jesus to become their Forever Friend. If so, let them go to the designated area. Today s Lesson What questions do you have about today s story? How did Zacchaeus show that his heart had changed? What did Jesus say about Zacchaeus? How does a person receive salvation like Zacchaeus did? How is God generous to us? How can you be generous to others? What should you do when you do something selfish or greedy? Teaching Tip Work with your Club Leader and Church Coordinator or Children s Pastor if leader-tostudent ratios begin to approach 1:10 or go over. Invite your friends to join your Beach Club team. Reach out to parents of clubbers to come and help. (More tips on building your team and team management can be found on pages 11-12 in your Leadership Manual.) Pray Encourage kids to write prayer requests on index cards. Lead the kids in prayer. Take the cards home and pray for kids during the week. Heavenly Father, thank you for your generosity to us. Help us to be generous to others. In Jesus name, Amen. Use the Bible Give each child a Memory Link card. Review today s Memory Link and Character Word. Guide kids to use cards to mark today s story in their KBC Study Bibles. Lead them to highlight today s Memory Link. Hang 10 Pages Give each child a Hang 10 Page. Challenge kids to hang out with God 10 minutes each day by praying and reading the Bible, using the Hang 10 page as a guide. Encourage kids to bring back their Hang 10 pages next week. More at Home Draw kids attention to the tip-in page Fruit of the Spirit in their KBC Study Bibles (before page 819). Explain that the Bible says people who follow Jesus can be identified by the kind of fruit they show in their lives. What words describe the change in Zacchaeus heart? Which actions are easy for you? Which ones are difficult? At home this week, try to memorize the fruit of the spirit, Galatians 5:22-23 (on page 1283 in your KBC Study Bible).

MAKE IT STICK - REVIEW GAME Game to review today s Bible Connection & Character Word Option 1 - SHOW ME THE MONEY Paper play money, including one $20 play bill, envelopes 5-10 (page 6) PREPARE - Put one play paper bill in each envelope. In one envelope put the $20 play bill. Prepare enough so each child has an envelope. ACTIVITY - Guide surf teams to sit in a circle. Give each child in the surf team an envelope you prepared. When you say go kids will pass the envelopes around the circle. When you say, stop each child will hold one envelope. Say, Show me the money. Kids will open envelopes. The person with the $20 bill answers a review question. Kids will return play money to envelopes and repeat the game. Alternate Set up: Leave all the envelopes empty except one. Put a piece of play money in that envelope and use it to determine who answers the question. Option 2 - PUTT PUTT Paint stir stick or ruler, sponge ball, cups PREPARE - Set the 2 cups 6-8 inches apart ACTIVITY - Line up surf teams single file about 10 feet away from the cups. At a signal the first person in line answers a review question. If the answer is correct, they may use the paint stir stick to putt the sponge ball between the two cups. If the ball goes between the cups without touching a cup teams score 2 points. If the ball goes through but touches one or both cups only 1 point is scored. REVIEW QUESTIONS 1.
