LENTEN FILM SERIES SUNDAY @ 2:30 MSGR. BOYLE MEDIA CENTER (In the School Building, Enter using the Ramp @ 207th Street) APRIL 9: 2 HOURS, 7 MINUTES THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST (2004) This film depicts the final hours of Jesus Christ, starting from His prayers in the Garden of Gethsemane and His betrayal at the hands of Judas Iscariot. It goes on to show the trials He endured under Pontius Pilate and King Herod as well as the torture and ridicule He suffered in between. Once the death sentence is pronounced, He carries a heavy wooden cross to Golgotha amidst throngs of jeering citizens and horrendous beatings, while a few citizens do what they can to help Him. Throughout this time, we are shown memories from His past with His mother and Disciples, where He gives His teachings. Finally, He is crucified, dies, and is buried, but resurrects from the dead on the third day. In this case Jesus is the messianic king. Since Jesus issued the others for all the arrangements, he knew well the message he wanted to convey. But soon all this will turn upside down. Isaiah tells us that as God s prophet, he uses his welltrained tongue to speck to the people. Even in this role, he is a suffering servant. The abuse is severe, but he accepts it willingly as part of his ministry. In spite of the punishment, he trusts that in the end he shall not be put to shame. Isaiah s words prepare us for the suffering of Jesus. Today s psalm is one of the most moving and heartwrenching of the psalm prayers. The suffering of the psalmist is no less striking then the figure in Isaiah. Not only do others scoff at him, they mock his faith in God. Generations later, similar taunts and ridicule will be directed at Jesus. At the end, the psalmist professes faith in God. Like Jesus, who in dying entrusted himself to the Father, his suffering is an act of praise. Paul s description of Christ could be regarded as the ultimate expression of Isaiah s suffering servant. The one who accepts the form of a slave humbles himself and willingly accepts death, even the ignominious death on a cross. The result of all this is not obscurity; in the end the servant is exalted by God, his name is exalted in heaven and on earth. Matthew s Passion story stretches from the plot of Judas to the stone placed before Jesus tomb, offering a wealth of details in its portrait of Jesus during this crucial sacrificial act. In spite of his human fears, Jesus, the Suffering Servant, is unyielding in his obedience to the Father. We stand in awe and gratitude for the gift od salvation. What similar words or images echo throughout the readings for you? When has the psalm s refrain felt like your own prayer? What part of the Passion story leaps out at you this year?
