Page2 Bible Lesson with Discussion Questions Message: Jesus has the power to do ANYTHING. Teacher Notes: This lesson may be more memorable if you decorate your room with some few simple things before class. See some of the suggestions below, or come up with your own creative ideas: - Send out wedding celebration invitations to each child in your class a couple of days before class. - Blow up some balloons and hang them from the ceiling with pretty ribbons or hang white crepe paper or other decorations around the room. - Tape white plastic table cloths to the tables and arrange them in a special way. - Make wedding favors for each child with dinner mints. - Make table place cards with all the children's names on them. Role Play Option Before class you will need to gather the props (drinking glasses, cardboard box, brown paper, food coloring and a table) for this role play activity. You will need to place all the cups on the table. Fill one of the jugs with water and add food coloring to make it look like wine (or use grape juice). Draw five jugs on the cardboard boxes. Print out enough copies of the role play for each character. All extra children could be guests at the wedding. Please see the Role Play Option sheets attached at the end of this lesson. Jesus Changes Water Into Wine On the third day there was a wedding. It took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus mother was there. 2 Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus mother said to him, They have no more wine. 4 Dear woman, why do you bring me into this? Jesus replied. My time has not yet come. 5 His mother said to the servants, Do what he tells you. 6 Six stone water jars stood nearby. The Jews used water from that kind of jar for special washings to make themselves pure. Each jar could hold 20 to 30 gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, Fill the jars with water. So they filled them to the top. 8 Then he told them, Now dip some out. Take it to the person in charge of the dinner. They did what he said. 9 The person in charge tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He didn t realize where it had come from. But the servants who had brought the water knew. Then the person in charge called the groom to one side. 10 He said to him, Everyone brings out the best wine first. They bring out the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink. But you have saved the best until now. 11 That was the first of Jesus miraculous signs. He did it at Cana in Galilee. Jesus showed his glory by doing it. And his disciples put their faith in him. 12 After this, Jesus went down to Capernaum. His mother and brothers and disciples went with him. They all stayed there for a few days.
Page3 Bible Lesson with Discussion Questions - Continued Discussion Questions: 1. Where was Jesus in the story today? (A wedding.) 2. Where did the wedding take place? (Cana in Galilee.) 3. Who asked Jesus to help when the wine was gone? (Jesus' mother, Mary.) 4. Why did Mary tell Jesus that the wedding party was running out of win? (Discuss together. Mary anticipated that Jesus would do something to resolve the problem and she knew that He was able to help, i.e. she trusted in His power.) 5. Why did Jesus say, my time has not yet come? (Jesus is saying that it was not time yet to reveal to all the people that He was the Son of God.) 6. What did Jesus ask the servants to do? (Fill the stone jars with water.) 7. How did Jesus change the water? (He turned it into wine.) 8. How big were the jars? How much water did Jesus turn into wine? (There were six stone jars, and each could hold 20 to 30 gallons.) 9. How many miracles had Jesus done before this? (None, this was the first miracle He did.) 10. What did Jesus' disciples do when they saw the miracle? (They put their faith in Jesus.) 11. How do we know this was Jesus first miracle? (See John 2:11.) 12. Why did Jesus do this miracle? (This miracle and all the miracles in which Jesus provided food or wine - a lot of food and a lot of wine, even more than needed - was also just a sign to show, Now, the kingdom of God has come on earth in Jesus. The prophets had promised that the Messiah would bring abundance, much more than they were able to ever provide for the people.) Application to Real Life For snack today, use one of the plastic pitchers from today's game let the children help you make some berry flavored drink mix. Children can then enjoy a snack of popcorn and a refreshing drink. What is a miracle? Write the above question on your white board or easel. Allow the children to answer and write down their responses. Ask them if they can think of any other miracles that Jesus performed and list those responses as well (give hints or clues as needed). Review the fact that Mary told the servants to do exactly what Jesus told them and why she did this. She believed completely that Jesus was the Son of God and He could do anything. Ask the children to explain what a miracle is. Write their ideas on the chart paper. Explain that a miracle is a surprising occurrence that cannot be explained by natural or scientific laws and is considered the work of God. Miracles are signs that lead people to believe in Christ. Briefly discuss what miracles occur today. Give the children some time to respond. Then ask the children to tell you why they think the examples they mentioned are miracles. Explain to the children that Jesus performed different types of miracles. The lesson story was an example of a gift miracle. Explain that a gift miracle was when someone received an abundance of some type of earthly gifts from Jesus. In the case of this lesson, the gift was the wine. Similarly, today, we can also experience Jesus help when we ask Him. Review the memory verse and message statement.

Page11 Take Home Page: Water into Wine Today I learned Today your child learned that Jesus has the power to do ANYTHING! The children examined the story of Jesus first miracle when He turned water into wine. They also talked about the fact that Jesus can still perform miracles today. Help me learn my memory verse Whatever He says to you, do it. --John 2:5 Ask me 1. Where was Jesus in today s lesson? 2. What did Jesus do when He performed His first miracle? 3. What did the disciples do when they saw the miracle? What would you have done? Live Your Faith Talk together about what miracles you have experienced or have heard of in your lifetime. Explain why what happened was a miracle. When Jesus performed miracles, it provided evidence of God s power to help and to heal people. We also get to experience things during our days and weeks that show us that God is with us. Pray together now and throughout the week that each one of you could experience God s presence, grace and love in some form. Don t forget to share your experiences with each other and thank Him for helping you to experience your faith.
