Preparation for Worship As you enter the Sanctuary, please prepare your heart for worship and silence your mobile devices. Our hymn of the month for October is A Mighty Fortress is Our God, written by one of the most popular hymn writers of all time, the great reformer, Martin Luther. Often called the Battle Hymn of the Reformation, this hymn, of all Luther s works, became the one most closely associated with Luther himself. Although the hymn clearly embodies in its words and melody so much of the bold and confident character of its author, the hymn was actually inspired by Psalm 46. Luther wrote it as a celebration of the sovereign power of God over all earthly and spiritual forces and of the sure hope we have in Him because of Christ. As we gather for worship on this World Wide Communion Sunday, may we honor our Mighty God by praising Jesus and resting confidently in the victory He won for us. EIN FESTE BURG WINVOCATION (Please lift hands) WTHE CONFESSION OF FAITH: Heidelberg Catechism Q. 21... Shelley Hill (8:15) Elizabeth Wall (11:00) What is true faith? True faith is a sure knowledge whereby I accept as true all that God has revealed to us in His Word. At the same time it is a firm confidence that not only to others, but also to me, God has granted forgiveness of sins, everlasting righteousness, and salvation, out of mere grace, only for the sake of Christ s merits. This faith the Holy Spirit works in my heart by the gospel. WDOXOLOGY... OLD HUNDREDTH Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav nly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. WORSHIP OF GOD WITH THE GIFTS OF GOD OFFERTORY ANTHEM Trinity Te Deum... Ēriks Ešenvalds We praise Thee, O God; we acknowlede Thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship Thee, the Father everlasting. To Thee all angels cry aloud: the heavens and all the powers therein. To Thee cherubim and seraphim continually do cry, Holy, holy, holy: Lord God of Sabaoth; Heaven and earth are full of the majesty of Thy glory. The glorious company of the apostles praise Thee. The goodly fellowship of the prophets praise Thee. The noble army of martyrs praise Thee. The holy church throughout all the world doth acknowledge Thee; The Father of an infinite Majesty; Thine honorable, true, and only Son; Also the Holy Ghost, the Comforter.

Thou art the King of Glory, O Christ. Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father. When Thou tookest upon Thee to deliver man, Thou didst not abhor the virgin s womb. When Thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death, Thou didst open the kingdom of heaven to all believers. Thou sittest at the right hand of God in the glory of the Father. We believe that Thou lt come to be our Judge. We therefore pray Thee, help Thy servants, Whom Thou st redeemed with Thy precious blood. Make them to be numbered with Thy saints in glory everlasting. SCRIPTURE LESSON... Exodus 20:17 and Hebrews 13:5-6 (pages 61 and 1009 in pew Bible) The grass withers, the flower fades, but the Word of our God will stand forever. (Isaiah 40:8) SERMON Your Neighbors Are Dangerous David Bowen INVITATION TO THE TABLE The Liturgy of the Table All those who have publicly professed their faith and joined a Christian church as a communing member are warmly welcomed to receive communion today. Non-communing worshipers are encouraged to contemplate the love of Jesus Christ during this time and pass by the elements. At Second Presbyterian, we encourage our children not to take communion until they have joined the church as communicant members. We do, however, encourage non-communing children to come forward with their parents to receive a blessing. Those wishing to be served communion together as a group or family, please stand together in front of the two serving elders before taking the elements. All communion wafers are gluten free. WPROFESSION OF OUR FAITH... The Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead; I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. WGLORIA PATRI... GREATOREX Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, World without end. Amen, Amen! CORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION Most holy and merciful Father, we confess that our lives are marked more by discouragement than by hope. Forgive us for failing to live in the confident assurance of Jesus resurrection. Trials and difficulties have caused us to doubt Your goodness, power, and care. Yet, You are with us in every storm and Your voice still commands the winds and waves. Accept our repentance, Lord, and strengthen our capacity to trust You, For we pray in the strong name of Jesus Christ our Lord. INDIVIDUAL PRAYERS OF CONFESSION ASSURANCE OF DIVINE PARDON...Acts 10:43 To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION PRAYER OF CONSECRATION SHARING THE BREAD AND THE CUP For those unable to come forward for communion, please raise your hand and an elder will serve you in your seat. Throughout this time of communion, we invite you to join in singing the hymn printed in bold below. O Sacred Head, Now Wounded.... PASSION CHORALE O sacred Head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down; Now scornfully surrounded with thorns, Thine only crown; O sacred Head, what glory, what bliss till now was Thine! Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call Thee mine. What Thou, my Lord, hast suffered was all for sinners gain: Mine, mine was the transgression, but Thine the deadly pain. Lo, here I fall, my Savior! Tis I deserve Thy place; Look on me with Thy favor, vouchsafe to me Thy grace. What language shall I borrow to thank Thee, dearest Friend, For this, Thy dying sorrow, Thy pity without end? O make me Thine forever; and should I fainting be, Lord, let me never, never outlive my love to Thee. So Will I... Joel Houston, Benjamin Hastings, Michael Fatkin God of creation, there at the start, before the beginning of time; With no point of ref rence, You spoke to the dark and fleshed out the wonder of light. And as You speak, a hundred billion galaxies are born. In the vapor of Your breath, the planets form. If the stars were made to worship, so will I. I can see Your heart in everything You ve made Every burning star, a signal fire of grace. If creation sings Your praises, so will I. God of Your promise, You don t speak in vain no syllable empty or void. For once You have spoken, all nature and science follow the sound of Your voice. And as You speak, a hundred billion creatures catch Your breath, And growing in pursuit of what You said. If it all reveals Your nature, so will I. I can see Your heart in everything You say Every painted sky, a canvas of Your grace. If creation still obeys You, so will I. So will I, so will I. If the stars were made to worship, so will I. If the mountains bow in reverence, so will I. If the oceans roar Your greatness, so will I. For if everything exists to lift You high, so will I. If the wind goes where You send it, so will I. If the rocks cry out in silence, so will I. If the sum of all our praises still falls shy, then we ll sing again a hundred billion times! God of salvation, You chased down my heart through all of my failure and pride. On a hill You created, the light of the world abandoned in darkness to die. And as You speak, a hundred billion failures disappear Where You lost Your life, so I could find it here. If You left the grave behind You, so will I. I can see Your heart in everything You ve done. Every part designed in a work of art called love. If You gladly chose surrender, so will I. I can see Your heart eight billion different ways Ev ry precious one, a child You died to save. If You gave Your life to love them, so will I. Like You would again a hundred billion times, But what measure could amount to Your desire. PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Ebeny Henderson, soloist
