The Order for Solemn Evensong for Michaelmas October 7, 2018 at 5:00 pm Organ Voluntary The choral setting of the Responses was composed for the Choir of Duke University by Robert Lehman (2015) All stand as the Choir and Ministers enter Sarabande In Modo Elegiaco Herbert Howells (1892 1983) Introit Truly the Lord is in this place. This is no other than the House of God. This is the gate of heaven. Words: Genesis 28:17 Music: Bernard Barrell (1919 2005) Confession of Sin Officiant Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God. Officiant and People, all kneeling Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, spare thou those who confess their faults,

restore thou those who are penitent, according to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of thy holy Name. Amen. The Officiant alone stands and says The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. People Amen. All stand The Invitatory and Psalter All remain standing as the Officiant and Choir sing V. O Lord, open thou our lips. R. And our mouth shall show forth thy praise. V. O God, make speed to save us. R. O Lord, make haste to help us. V. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. V. Praise ye the Lord. R. The Lord s Name be praised. All remain standing as the following hymn is sung by the Choir Phos hilaron O gladsome light, O grace Of God the Father s face, Eternal splendour wearing; Celestial, Holy, Lord, Our Saviour Christ adored, We joy in thine appearing. Now, at the close of day, As sunlight fades away, With hearts and hymns outpouring; 2

We praise thee, God of might Incarnate Son of light, And Spirit all adoring. To Thee all praise belongs To Thee we raise our songs, O Son of God, Life-giver; To Thee, O Lord most high, The world doth glorify, And shall exalt for ever. Words: Greek, 3rd c.; tr. Robert Bridges (1844 1930) Music: Raymond Weidner (2012) All are then seated as the Choir sings the Psalm appointed for the day The Psalmody Psalm 104 Benedic, anima mea Anglican Chants: Benjamin Hutto Robert Lehman John Joubert Praise the Lord, O my soul: O Lord my God, thou art become exceeding glorious; thou art clothed with majesty and honour. Thou deckest thyself with light as it were with a garment, and spreadest out the heavens like a curtain. Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters, and maketh the clouds his chariot, and walketh upon the wings of the wind. He maketh his angels winds, and his ministers a flaming fire. He laid the foundations of the earth, that it never should move at any time. Thou coveredst it with the deep like as with a garment; the waters stand above the hills. At thy rebuke they flee; at the voice of thy thunder they haste away. 3

They go up as high as the hills, and down to the valleys beneath; even unto the place which thou hast appointed for them. Thou hast set them their bounds, which they shall not pass, neither turn again to cover the earth. He sendeth the springs into the rivers, which run among the hills. All beasts of the field drink thereof, and the wild asses quench their thirst. Beside them shall the fowls of the air have their habitation, and sing among the branches. He watereth the hills from above; the earth is filled with the fruit of thy works. He bringeth forth grass for the cattle, and green herb for the service of men; That he may bring food out of the earth, and wine that maketh glad the heart of man; and oil to make him a cheerful countenance, and bread to strengthen man s heart. The trees of the Lord also are full of sap; even the cedars of Lebanon which he hath planted; Wherein the birds make their nests; and the firtrees are a dwelling for the stork. The high hills are a refuge for the wild goats; and so are the stony rocks for the conies. He appointed the moon for certain seasons, and the sun knoweth his going down. Thou makest darkness that it may be night; wherein all the beasts of the forest do move. The lions, roaring after their prey, do seek their meat from God. The sun ariseth, and they get them away together, and lay them down in their dens. 4

Man goeth forth to his work, and to his labour, until the evening. O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all; the earth is full of thy riches. So is the great and wide sea also; wherein are things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts. There go the ships, and there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to take his pastime therein. These wait all upon thee, that thou mayest give them meat in due season. When thou givest it them, they gather it; and when thou openest thy hand, they are filled with good. When thou hidest thy face, they are troubled: when thou takest away their breath, they die, and are turned again to their dust. When thou lettest thy breath go forth, they shall be made; and thou shalt renew the face of the earth. The glorious majesty of the Lord shall endure for ever; the Lord shall rejoice in his works. The earth shall tremble at the look of him; if he do but touch the hills, they shall smoke. I will sing unto the Lord as long as I live; I will praise my God while I have my being. And so shall my words please him: my joy shall be in the Lord. As for sinners, they shall be consumed out of the earth, and the ungodly shall come to an end. Praise thou the Lord, O my soul. Praise the Lord. Then the Gloria Patri is sung Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. 5

The Lessons The First Lesson Hosea 13:4 14 I am the Lord your God from the land of Egypt; you know no God but me, and besides me there is no savior. It was I who knew you in the wilderness, in the land of drought; but when they had fed to the full, they were filled, and their heart was lifted up; therefore they forgot me. So I will be to them like a lion, like a leopard I will lurk beside the way. I will fall upon them like a bear robbed of her cubs, I will tear open their breast, and there I will devour them like a lion, as a wild beast would rend them. I will destroy you, O Israel; who can help you? Where now is your king, to save you; where are all your princes, to defend you those of whom you said, Give me a king and princes? I have given you kings in my anger, and I have taken them away in my wrath. The iniquity of E phraim is bound up, his sin is kept in store. The pangs of childbirth come for him, but he is an unwise son; for now he does not present himself at the mouth of the womb. Shall I ransom them from the power of Sheol? Shall I redeem them from Death? O Death, where are your plagues? O Sheol, where is your destruction? Compassion is hid from my eyes. Following the Lesson, all stand for the singing of the Office Hymn Office Hymn 619 Martins All remain standing for the singing of the Magnificat Magnificat in E minor My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. 6

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Words: Luke 1:46 55 with Gloria Patri Music: Leo Sowerby (1895 1968) All are seated following the singing of the Magnificat The Second Lesson 1 Corinthians 2:6-16 Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glorification. None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But, as it is written, What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him, God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For what person knows a man s thoughts except the spirit of the man which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is from God, that we might understand the gifts bestowed on us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who possess the Spirit. The unspiritual man does not receive the gifts of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual man judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. For who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ. Following the Lesson, all stand for the singing of the Nunc dimittis Nunc dimittis in E minor Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Words: Luke 2:29 32 with Gloria Patri Music: Leo Sowerby 7

The Apostles Creed Sung on a monotone by the Officiant and People together, all standing I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The Prayers The Officiant and Choir sing the following V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit. V. Let us pray. The People kneel R. Lord have mercy upon us. Christ have mercy upon us. Lord have mercy upon us. Then the short form of the Lord s Prayer is sung by all, kneeling Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 8

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. Then follow these Suffrages, sung by the Officiant and Choir V. O Lord, show thy mercy upon us. R. And grant us thy salvation. V. O Lord, save the State. R. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. V. Endue thy ministers with righteousness. R. And make thy chosen people joyful. V. O Lord, save thy people. R. And bless thine inheritance. V. Give peace in our time, O Lord. R. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. V. O God, make clean our hearts within us. R. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. The following Collects are sung; the Choir sings Amen. The Collect of the Day O everlasting God, who hast ordained and constituted the ministries of angels and men in a wonderful order: Mercifully grant that, as thy holy angels always serve and worship thee in heaven, so by thy appointment they may help and defend us on earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. A Collect for Peace O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed: Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of all enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. 9

A Collect for Aid against Perils L ighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. Benedicamus Domino Officiant People The Grace Officiant The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Ghost, be with us all evermore. People Amen. Then the Congregation is seated Greeting Anthem Christ, the fair glory of the holy Angels, Thou who hast made us, Thou who o er us rulest, Grant of Thy mercy unto us Thy servants Steps up to heaven. Send Thy Archangel Michael, to our succour; Peacemaker blessed, May he banish from us Striving and hatred, so that for the peaceful All things may prosper. Send Thy Archangel Gabriel, the mighty Herald of Heaven, May he from us mortals Spurn the old serpent, watching o er the temples Where Thou art worshipped. 10

Send Thy Archangel Raphael, the restorer Of the misguided Ways of men who wander, Who at Thy bidding strengthens soul and body With Thine anointing. Father Almighty, Son, and Holy Spirit, God ever blessed, Be Thou our preserver, Thine is the glory which the Angels worship, Veiling their faces. Amen. Words: Rabanus Maurus (776 856) Music: Ernest Bullock (1890 1979) Closing Prayers All kneel V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit. The Officiant may then offer prayers for mission and for the world The Blessing Then all stand for the singing of the Te Deum laudamus Te Deum laudamus for St. George s, Windsor We praise thee, O God, we acknowledge thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship thee, the Father everlasting. To thee all Angels cry aloud, the heavens and all the powers therein. To thee Cherubim and Seraphim continually do cry, Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Sabaoth; Heaven and earth are full of the Majesty of thy glory, The glorious company of the Apostles praise thee. The goodly fellowship of the Prophets praise thee. The noble army of Martyrs praise thee. The Holy Church throughout all the world doth acknowledge thee; The Father of an infinite Majesty; Thine honourable, true, and only Son; Also the Holy Ghost, the Comforter. 11

Thou art the King of Glory, O Christ. Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father. When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man, thou didst not abhor the Virgin s womb. When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death, thou didst open the kingdom of Heaven to all believers. Thou sittest at the right hand of God in the Glory of the Father. We believe that thou shalt come to be our Judge. We therefore pray thee, help thy servants whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious blood. Make them to be numbered with thy Saints in Glory everlasting. O Lord, save thy people and bless thine heritage. Govern them and lift them up for ever. Day by day we magnify thee; And we worship thy Name ever, world without end. Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us this day without sin. O Lord, have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us. O Lord, let thy mercy lighten upon us as our trust is in thee. O Lord, in thee have I trusted, let me never be confounded. Words: Fifth Century Music: Herbert Howells (1892 1983) At the conclusion of the Te Deum the Choir and Ministers depart; the Congregation remains standing as the procession retires All are cordially invited to a reception in the Great Hall following the Office The next service of Choral Evensong will be sung on Sunday, November 4 at 5:00 pm. 12
