Greeting and Announcements Our Savior Lutheran Church Mankato, Minnesota The Third Sunday after Epiphany January 22, 2017 Hymn of Invocation: Rise, Shine, You People LSB 825 1 Rise, shine, you people! Christ the Lord has entered Our human story; God in Him is centered. He comes to us, by death and sin surrounded, With grace unbounded. 2 See how He sends the pow rs of evil reeling; He brings us freedom, light and life and healing. All men and women, who by guilt are driven, Now are forgiven. 3 Come, celebrate, your banners high unfurling, Your songs and prayers against the darkness hurling. To all the world go out and tell the story Of Jesus glory. 4 Tell how the Father sent His Son to save us. Tell of the Son, who life and freedom gave us. Tell how the Spirit calls from ev ry nation His new creation. 1974 Augsburg Publishing House; admin. Augsburg Fortress. Used by permission: LSB Hymn License.NET, no. 100010342. Invocation P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. Exhortation P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. P Our help is in the name of the Lord, C who made heaven and earth. P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.

Confession of Sins P Almighty God, our maker and redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against You by thought, word, and deed. Wherefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. C O most merciful God, who has given Your only-begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You and of Your will and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Forgiveness of our Sin (Declaration of Grace) P Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and has given His only Son to die for us and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To those who believe on His name He gives power to become the children of God and has promised them His Holy Spirit. He that believes and is baptized shall be saved. Grant this, Lord, unto us all. C Amen. Lord, Have Mercy! (Kyrie) Greeting and Prayer of the Day (Salutation and Collect) 2

P Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, mercifully look upon our infirmities and stretch forth the hand of Your majesty to heal and defend us; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 9:1 4 But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined. You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil. For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Reading from a New Testament Letter (Epistle): 1 Corinthians 1:10 18 I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe s people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. What I mean is that each one of you says, I follow Paul, or I follow Apollos, or I follow Cephas, or I follow Christ. Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, so that no one may say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the 3

gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Anthem: On Christmas Night All Christians Sing Adult Choir with Handbells Alleluia Holy Gospel: Matthew 4:12 25 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the fourth chapter. Now when [Jesus] heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned. From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. 4

And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people. So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, epileptics, and paralytics, and he healed them. And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. Confession of Faith (Apostles' Creed) C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. Children's Message Hymn of the Day: O Christ, Our True and Only Light LSB 839 1 O Christ, our true and only light, Enlighten those who sit in night; Let those afar now hear Your voice And in Your fold with us rejoice. 2 Fill with the radiance of Your grace The souls now lost in error s maze; Enlighten those whose inmost minds Some dark delusion haunts and blinds. 3 O gently call those gone astray That they may find the saving way! Let ev ry conscience sore oppressed In You find peace and heav nly rest. 5

4 Shine on the darkened and the cold; Recall the wand rers to Your fold. Unite all those who walk apart; Confirm the weak and doubting heart, 5 That they with us may evermore Such grace with wond ring thanks adore And endless praise to You be giv n By all Your Church in earth and heav n. Public domain Sermon Offering Song (Offertory) Offering Prayer of the Church 6

Preface Proper Preface P It is truly meet, right, and salutary... evermore praising You and saying: Holy, Holy, Holy (Sanctus) 7

Lord's Prayer P Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Words of Our Lord The Lord s Peace (Pax Domini) P The peace of the Lord be with you always. Lamb of God (Agnus Dei) 8

Distribution Hymns: O God of God, O Light of Light LSB 810 1 O God of God, O Light of Light, O Prince of Peace and King of kings: To you in heaven s glory bright The song of praise forever rings. To Him who sits upon the throne, The Lamb once slain but raised again, Be all the glory He has won, All thanks and praise! Amen, amen. 2 For deep in prophets sacred page, And grand in poets wingèd word, Slowly in type, from age to age The nations saw their coming Lord; Till through the deep Judean night Rang out the song, Goodwill to men! Sung once by firstborn sons of light, It echoes now, Goodwill! Amen. 9

3 That life of truth, those deeds of love, That death so steeped in hate and scorn These all are past, and now above He reigns, our King once crowned with thorn. Lift up your heads, O mighty gates! So sang that host beyond our ken. Lift up your heads, your King awaits. We lift them up. Amen, amen. 4 Then raise to Christ a mighty song, And shout His name, His mercies tell! Sing, heav nly host, your praise prolong, And all on earth, your anthem swell! All hail, O Lamb for sinners slain! Forever let the song ascend! Worthy the Lamb, enthroned to reign, All glory, pow r! Amen, amen. Public domain The Church's One Foundation LSB 644 1 The Church s one foundation Is Jesus Christ, her Lord; She is His new creation By water and the Word. From heav n He came and sought her To be His holy bride; With His own blood He bought her, And for her life He died. 2 Elect from ev ry nation, Yet one o er all the earth; Her charter of salvation: One Lord, one faith, one birth. One holy name she blesses, Partakes one holy food, And to one hope she presses With ev ry grace endued. 10

3 Though with a scornful wonder The world sees her oppressed, By schisms rent asunder, By heresies distressed, Yet saints their watch are keeping; Their cry goes up, How long? And soon the night of weeping Shall be the morn of song. 4 Through toil and tribulation And tumult of her war She waits the consummation Of peace forevermore Till with the vision glorious Her longing eyes are blest, And the great Church victorious Shall be the Church at rest. 5 Yet she on earth has union With God, the Three in One, And mystic sweet communion With those whose rest is won. O blessèd heav nly chorus! Lord, save us by Your grace That we, like saints before us, May see You face to face. Public domain Thanksgiving 11

Greeting (Salutation) Our Blessing (Benedicamus) The Lord s Blessing (Benediction) P The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and T give you peace. 12

Closing Hymn: Sent Forth by God's Blessing LSB 643 1 Sent forth by God s blessing, Our true faith confessing, The people of God from His dwelling take leave. The Supper is ended. O now be extended The fruits of this service in all who believe. The seed of His teaching, Receptive souls reaching, Shall blossom in action for God and for all. His grace did invite us, His love shall unite us To work for God s kingdom and answer His call. 2 With praise and thanksgiving To God ever-living, The tasks of our ev ryday life we will face. Our faith ever sharing, In love ever caring, Embracing His children of each tribe and race. With Your feast You feed us, With Your light now lead us; Unite us as one in this life that we share. Then may all the living With praise and thanksgiving Give honor to Christ and His name that we bear. 1964 World Library Publications. Used by permission: LSB Hymn License.NET, no. 100010342.
