In our film program, you ll discover yourself as an artist and obtain the critical skills you will need to flourish in your career as a director or cinematographer. Our hands-on curriculum focuses on creativity and action, bringing your ideas to life with excellence in every aspect of production. The skills you develop in these courses lay the foundation for your capstone film which will rise to a new level of professionalism through hired Screen Actors Guild talent and a composer. JP Catholic also collaborates with outside production companies to give you the opportunity to work on a commercial set before graduating, so you ll earn credits while building relationships before you enter the industry. 4 you will... Graduate with a portfolio of work and a powerful network of peers and mentors who can guide you into the industry. Most importantly, you ll have been formed as a director in an authentically Catholic environment by filmmakers who take an interest in you not only professionally, but also spiritually.

networking It s an oft-quoted Hollywood saying: Success isn t what you know, it s who you know. At JP Catholic, you ll have the opportunity to create a powerful network of collaborators, mentors, and investors. Just listen to what recent graduate Matt Salisbury says: A while ago, I got an email from my professor asking for the latest draft of a script I was working on. He d had lunch that day with a high-profile screenwriter who d recently written a Will Smith movie. Turns out the writer was looking to produce a low budget script, and Chris pitched him mine. I was able to get in touch with the writer (who turned out to be a great guy) and establish a relationship. He s asked to read all my future work as soon as I finish it. Stories impact us in profound ways. Good stories can inspire and touch our souls; they bring freshness, life, understanding, and clarity to our experience. Stories draw us closer to God and to truth, beauty, and goodness. Story, in essence, is at the core of the entertainment that shapes our culture and society. If you aspire to write and bring stories to life, JP Catholic s Screenwriting curriculum will give you the training and network you need to succeed. Program director Christopher Riley is a veteran WGA screenwriter and author of The Hollywood Standard: A Guide to Script Format and Style. You ll graduate with polished screenplays, a professional network, and mentors who care about you personally and spiritually. {screenwriting 5

student {visionaries Yellow Line Studio Oak Hills Brewing Co. Oak Hills Brewing Co. is a craft brewery that opened in November 2012 in Hesperia, California. The brainchild of JP Catholic student Joe Connolly and two external collaborators, Oak Hills Brewery started in JP Catholic s Do.School, where Joe found the mentorship and investment needed to get the idea off the ground. Find Oak Hills on the web at oakhillsbrewing.com Students worked with faculty to create Yellow Line Studio, which launched the web TV show Bump+; created and sold the feature film Red Line; received over $1.5 million in funding to develop online entertainment properties; and coordinated messaging and video creation for the Catholics for Romney campaign. Read more about Yellow Line s projects on pages 10-11 Radcom Studios Radcom Studios is a design firm that specializes in animated marketing videos for small businesses. Radcom has pioneered a process to create professional motion-graphic videos at a low cost. While Radcom is still developing its business model in the Do.School, their innovative process has already attracted many significant clients. Find Radcom on the web at radcomstudios.com 7

What better way to learn business than by building a business with your peers? The three-course Do.School sequence is your opportunity to do something significant. 1 Solve a Complex Problem: All entrepreneurship starts with identifying a problem in the marketplace. The Do.School courses guide you through the process of identifying a problem, crafting a solution, validating the idea, and then building a business model around your solution. 8

2 Experienced Mentors: JP Catholic s faculty has an abundance of senior executive and entrepreneurial experience. You ll get personal mentorship from faculty who have actually built companies. Mentoring and coaching can significantly increase the likelihood of success. 3 Infrastructure: Building a business is a risky endeavor, and JP Catholic s Do.School provides a safe environment for you to make your idea a reality. JP Catholic provides your company all of the low-cost infrastructure you ll need to get started, such as office space, conference facilities, copy and fax machines, and more. 9

{real-world projects JP Catholic invites production companies to use our soundstage and film equipment, and in return students gain real-world film experience. Bump+ was a 13-episode web series about three women in crisis pregnancy situations. The show generated national buzz and was featured on websites such as Fox News, Slate, Big Hollywood, and Perez Hilton, while also being discussed on Laura Ingraham s nationally syndicated radio show and many regional and international TV stations. The show was called the most talked-about web series ever created. It made a huge cultural impact as well: in a poll of high school students, 25% of self-identified pro-choice students changed their minds on the issue of abortion after watching the series. Bump+ exemplified JP Catholic s belief in the power of story to change hearts and minds. 10

Red Line is a feature film starring John Billingsley (Star Trek Enterprise, The West Wing) and Nicole Gale Anderson (Make it or Break it, Mean Girls 2) about ten passengers trapped in a subway car after a bomb explodes. Most of the movie was filmed in JP Catholic s soundstage, and over 60% of JP Catholic s student body played a role in making the film. Red Line was recently sold to a distributor and has already entered several major international markets. Alumna Tara Stone, who wrote Red Line with mentorship from faculty, on her experience: What I learned in the classroom prepared me for the work I did on Red Line, but I learned far more working on Red Line than I ever did in the classroom. Figuring out how to collaborate with so many moving parts and dealing with unexpected obstacles during shooting those are things that you just can t get from a lecture or a textbook. You learn that it s not just about talent, but hard work and long hours. And the hard work and long hours pay off somebody on set will notice, and they ll want to work with you again. 11

What better way to learn than by using our current, state-of-the-art equipment and soundstage? JP Catholic s media program features a rigorous, hands-on education. 1 Create film sets for your productions on our soundstage. The soundstage is outfitted with a full lighting grid and supporting grip equipment everything from monitors to meathooks and cutters to cucalorises. Film & TV Production Equipment 12

You ll thrive in our Business of Entertainment concentration. Learn to be a producer who brings together film and television s creative and technical minds, with a deep understanding of the creative process tempered by a realistic view of the entertainment business. Classes from our media program will teach you the fundamentals of filmmaking, while a solid business foundation will help you manage, market, and sell a finished product. The animation and design courses will give you a strong competency as you begin your career. animation} 16 original concept art by student Andy Barth

{video game design The video game industry is a global phenomenon with a larger market than both the music and film industries combined. It is one of the fastest growing sectors in the US economy, and has significant impact on our culture, both positive and negative. The Video Game Design program integrates theory and practice to prepare you for a career in the video game industry. You will be exposed to a variety of design concepts and tools related to creating video games including: storytelling and gameplay design, level design, multiplayer, Unity 3D game engine, game environment and character animation using Maya 3D, and JavaScript programming. In your capstone experience, you will apply design concepts to different game genres and use game design tools to create a working demo of a video game during the course of your program. 17

new evangelization} Where theology meets new media program Pillars of Catholicism In response to the Holy Father s declaration of the Year of Faith, New Evangelization students created Pillars of Catholicism, an online lecture series featuring JP Catholic faculty. The series was designed as an engaging way for Catholics to respond to the Holy Father s challenge to study the Catechism of the Catholic Church during the Year of Faith. The lecture series has been viewed by more than 10,000 people internationally. Watch their work at www.pillarsofcatholicism.com This new millennium has ushered in an explosion of new media and other channels through which to spread the Good News of Christ, and John Paul the Great called us to embrace these new means of communication to impact the culture in which we live. The New Evangelization program embraces his exhortation and features a seamless integration of Sacred Scripture and theology, new media, and film production. You ll complete 54 credits of Scripture, Catholic theology, and philosophy. You ll understand how to teach this material and incorporate it into your own prayer life. Finally, you ll acquire the media and film production training to communicate the Gospel using visual media. 18

Our Commitment to the Magisterium of the Church Theology professors have the mandatum from the Bishop of San Diego. The mandatum documents the professor s commitment and responsibility to teach authentic Catholic doctrine and to refrain from putting forth anything contrary to the Church s magisterial teachings. At JP Catholic, our commitment to our Catholic identity is paramount. The teachings of Jesus Christ form our foundation, shaping who you become and preparing you to impact culture for Christ. Our liberal arts core curriculum is rooted in a rigorous study of Sacred Scripture, Catholic theology, and the philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas. You will also engage the great books of Western Civilization, the great sacred art and music of the Church, the history of philosophical thought, marriage and family, and Catholic social teaching. Most importantly, you will learn how to integrate your study of Scripture into your prayer life, thus turning your work into an expression of your personal commitment to Christ. Catholic core curriculum} 19

discerning the priesthood JP Catholic actively encourages all students to discern whether God is calling them toward the priesthood or religious life. Religious orders send their seminarians to JP Catholic for pretheologate formation, and we have religious sisters in our undergraduate programs. Our Catholic core curriculum will give you the theology and philosophy you will need to enter the seminary if God calls you in that direction. 15 20 Seminarians for the Chaldean Catholic Church
