FEAST OF FAITH The Liturgies of Holy Week Holy Week is the culmination of the liturgical year. During these holy days, the liturgy will lead us, with Jesus, to the depths and to the heights. It begins with a harsh juxtaposition, as we carry palms in remembrance of Christ s triumphant entry into Jerusalem and then listen to the Passion according to Matthew, as the King is handed over for crucifixion. Then, on Holy Thursday, we remember the night Jesus was handed over the night he gave himself for us and to us, to live in our midst forever in the sacrament of his Body and Blood. On Good Friday, we touch with our hands the mystery of the Lord s cross, the instrument of torture that has become the tree of life. Then, at the great Easter Vigil, the lighting of the paschal candle speaks to us of the triumph of light over darkness, of life over death. The resurrection of the Lord becomes a living reality in our midst as the catechumens for whom the Church has prayed throughout Lent are plunged into the mystery of Christ s death and share in the glory of his resurrection. These are indeed holy days, the culmination of the Church s liturgy, and an invitation to participate in the very life of Christ. Come, let us worship. Corinna Laughlin, Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. APRIL 10, 2011 4:00 PM Mass...? 9:00 AM Mass...? 11:30 AM Mass...? Total...? HOSANNA! Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest (Matthew 21:9). With these words the Church enters the holiest of weeks, commemorating the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ. When the people of Jerusalem cried out with their hosannas, they were using an ancient Hebrew shout of acclamation that meant Pray, save us. The king to whom they were shouting eventually would save them, but in a way that would be far from what they expected. Salvation would come from the wood of the cross as Jesus hung there to bring freedom from sin and life through death, opening the gates of heaven for all who put their faith and trust in him. Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. Family Perspective: by Bud Ozar The cruel death of Jesus tells us bad things can and do happen to very good people. It also tells us God is present during the suffering. Bad things happen but God does not abandon us. Marriage Moments: by Susan Vogt...Until death do us part. This alternative wording of the wedding vow is sobering and most couples don t focus on it for long. The crucifixion, however, reminds us of the reality of death. Have you shared with each other your feelings about death? Parenting Pointers: by Susan Vogt Everybody s got a cross to bear. If your, or your child s, cross is relatively light, be a Simon of Cyrene. Look for someone else who needs help carrying their cross today. Perhaps you and your child can do it together.

Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion April 17, 2011 Passion Play, "Why Must He Die?" Good Friday, April 23 at 12 Noon The Pastor s Cornered 16 th Edition Mark your calendars to attend the TriCounty Choir Institute's musical passion play, "Why Must He Die?" at St. John of God Parish at St. Mary Church site on Good Friday, April 23 at 12 noon. Over the past 20 years it has been presented there and throughout the area in over 135 churches of all denominations. In celebration of our 20th year anniversary, we have assembled 20 alumni together with our 15 High School Students of the Teen Chorale for this presentation. They represent many professions as varied as music directors, nurses, teachers, sales and business managers, a professional photographer and a doctor. "Why Must He Die?" is a meditation through music, drama and liturgical dance on the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. It is a unique passion play written as a play within a play. Throughout the trial of Jesus by Pilate and the Accusers, the action is repeatedly frozen. The disciples and apostles are then seen reflecting on Jesus' life and reacting to what led to Jesus' impending death. They share their thoughts with the audience as if they too, hypothetically, have been allowed to observe Jesus' trial. The 35 member cast of Alumni and High School students will only be giving 5 performances. It is 1 hour and 20 minutes in length. For more information, please call the director and writer, Linda Wallace at 412-741-3463 or lindaswallace@comcast.net. Don't miss this very special presentation this year! THE CROSS We should glory in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, for he is our salvation, our life and our resurrection; through him we are saved and made free. Opening Antiphon, Evening Mass of the Lord s Supper, Roman Missal I promised you last week I would include the Easter Treat in this week s bulletin so here it is. I wanted to give everybody a chance to prepare if you actually wanted to try last week s recipes during Holy week which is why they were included in that bulletin and the same holds true for this Easter recipe. Also if you really want to extend this recipe and relate it to Biblical history - then spend a portion of Holy Week reading John 12 18. For your Easter celebration serve Resurrection Rolls for breakfast or with your Easter Brunch. Ingredients: One can of crescent roll dough - 8 large marshmallows (or one for each roll you ll be making) - Melted butter - Cinnamon sugar - Bible or Easter storybook. Directions: Assemble rolls and read the story - Read John 19 while the oven is pre-heating according to package directions Unroll the crescent rolls Explain this is like the cloth Jesus was wrapped in Give each participant a marshmallow and explain that it represents Jesus; all white and pure because He was without sin Roll marshmallows in melted butter symbolizing the embalming oils Roll marshmallows in the cinnamon sugar; representing the spices used to prepare Jesus body for burial Wrap marshmallows in crescent roll cloth, pinching dough together securely; representing how they would have wrapped Jesus body Put rolls in the oven; symbolizing the tomb bake for the amount of time specified on the package While rolls are baking read John 20: 1-18 Open the tomb and remove rolls when cool enough to handle break one open and discover what happened to the marshmallows Jesus is risen! May you each have a very blessed Holy Week and as our Pastor would say; see you in church lots! RESURRECTION TO COME But from this earth, this grave, this dust, My God shall raise me up, I trust.
