Week of June 26, 2011 Lessons for the Leader We can read God's rules in the Bible. God wants us to love Him and follow His rules. One of those rules is to worship God and only God. Help preschoolers begin to worship God. Read Exodus 19:1-8. Notice the "destination" where God was leading the Israelites. God was not simply bringing them to Mount Sinai; He was bringing them to Himself. God was leading the people to have a right relationship with Him as Lord of their lives. Reread verses 5-6. The word if indicates that God did not plan to force the covenant on the people; the Israelites were free to accept or reject the conditions He offered. Read Exodus 19:9-25. Note the careful instructions God gave to help the Israelites focus their minds on Him. God did not want the people to approach an encounter with Him unprepared or to take the experience lightly and miss its significance. What are you doing to focus your mind on God as you prepare to worship Him and lead worship at church? Read Exodus 20:1-20. Before God gave the Ten Commandments, He identified who He was and what He had done. The first four commands relate to loving God, and the remaining six relate to loving others. The message is clear. The first step is to love God and live in a right relationship with Him; loving others naturally follows. Realize that obedience to God comes from hearts that love Him. To hear what God says is never enough; He requires obedience. As you lead in worship, emphasize that obeying God's rules is important because it shows that we love God. Seek to lay a solid foundation for boys and girls to worship God alone. Remark: "Our Bible story begins in chapter 19." 9aTell the Bible Story (7 minutes) Pull It Together Scissors, paper, markers Print and cut apart "Ten Rules" (CD). Distribute the rules to adult helpers to display during the story. Print the numbers 1 10 on individual papers. Lay the numbers in random order on the floor. Teacher Tips Make multiples of each number, 1 10, to ensure there is a number for every 2 4 children. Invite children to pray as they return to the number 1 at the end of the story. Thank God that He gave us special rules to obey. Confess that He is the one true God. Call attention to the numbers. Instruct: "The numbers on the floor will help us remember our Bible story today. Listen carefully to the story. When you hear a rule number, find that number on the floor and stand near it until the next number is called." Open your Bible and tell the story. God Gave Rules to Moses Based on Exodus 19:1 20:20 God chose a man named Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. God showed Moses where to go and what to do. God led Moses and the people to a camp at the bottom of a mountain. Moses left the people and went up the mountain to talk to God. God said, "Moses, remind the people how I helped them leave Egypt. I kept them safe as they traveled to this mountain. Tell them to listen to Me and do what I tell them to do. I am coming in a cloud to speak to everyone. Tell them to get ready to wash all of their clothes and to set up boundaries (lines not to cross) around the mountain. Tell the people to look for a thick cloud and to listen for the sound of a trumpet." God Gave Rules to Moses

Moses went down the mountain and told the people what God said. They replied, "We will do what God told us to do." Moses returned to the mountain to talk to God again. God wanted the people to know what they should do and how they should obey Him. God told Moses and the people to obey these 10 special rules. Say: "When you hear the number of each rule, find that number. Stand very still by that number until you hear the next rule number called." [Direct leaders to display the rules on their papers when the numbers are called.] 1. Do not worship anyone but God. God is the only God. 2. Do not worship anything you have made. Do not make anything more important than God. 3. Always say God's name in a respectful way. 4. Work on six days. On the seventh day, rest and worship God. 5. 'Do not worship anyone or anything but God.' Exodus 20:3. God gave the Israelites 10 rules or Commandments to follow. We can follow those same Commandments today. Let's make commandment books to help us remember all 10. Decorate your covers first." Distribute covers, embellishments, and markers, noting to children the correct sides to decorate [line up the punched holes]. Give each child a copy of "Ten Rules" and tell children to cut rules apart. Help kids stack the Commandments in the correct order and punch holes. Assist children with threading yarn through the punched holes and tying. Lead children to clean the area. Instruct: "Let's look at our books together. Everyone open to the first page. We'll read our books together." Encourage children to follow along in their books as you read aloud the Commandments. Conclude: "God gave the Israelites rules to follow. These rules are called the Ten Commandments. We can and should follow these Commandments today. We can remember God wants people to worship Him only." Pray. Pull It Together Children's scissors, markers, heavyweight paper, ziplock bags Print "Blank Puzzle" (CD) onto heavyweight paper. Print 1 or more per child. Print and cut apart "Ten Commandments" (CD). Lay the "Ten Commandments" down the center of the table or display on wall. Worship Through Dramatic Play Make Puzzles about Worship Distribute the blank puzzles. State: "We can understand God wants us to worship Him only. 'Do not worship anyone or anything but God.' Exodus 20:3. God gave the Israelites 10 rules or Commandments to follow. We can follow those same Commandments today. We'll make puzzles to help us remember to worship only God. We can draw ways we worship God such as coming to church, singing, praying, obeying our parents, giving money to church, and being kind to people. Or, we can choose to draw pictures of the Ten Commandments. Here are pictures of the Ten Commandments [point]." Assist children with deciding what to draw on their puzzles. Suggest children draw more than one puzzle. Help children cut apart their puzzles. Distribute ziplock bags and tell kids to put their puzzles pieces in their bags. Invite children to ask friends to put together their puzzles. Lead children to clean the area. Conclude: "God gave the Israelites rules to follow. These rules are called the Ten Commandments. Pull It Together Giant Game Floor Mat*, scissors, tape Print "Review Game GGFM," "Cube," and "Ten Commandments" (CD). Place "Review Game GGFM" pages in pockets in correct order. Starting pages: Row 1: page 1 Row 2: page 5 Row 3: page 11 Row 4: page 16 Cut apart "Ten Commandments" and place behind the papers in the pockets. Cut out and assemble the cube. Place mat on the floor. Teacher Tip Use a beanbag in place of the cube. Pull It Together Index cards, markers, container, paper Print items children and people tend to covet or worship (toys, candy, cars, movies, dolls, money, jobs, cars, houses, etc.) on separate cards. Print God on several cards. Put all cards in the container. Worship Through Games Play Review Games Direct children to sit around the mat. Invite three children at a time to come stand beside the start space and play the game. Instruct: "We'll take turns rolling the cube and moving that many spaces on the mat. You will answer a question or do the action on the space on which you land." Direct the other children to help kids count, move, and answer questions. Continue until all children play. State: "We can understand God wants us to worship Him only. 'Do not worship anyone or anything but God.' Exodus 20:3. God gave the Israelites 10 rules or Commandments to follow. We can follow those same Commandments today. Let's play again, but this time you will look for Commandments behind the papers in the pockets." Play a second time, directing each child to look for a Commandment behind the paper in the pocket on which he lands. Read aloud the Commandments. Play again, inviting children to find the matching Commandment pieces. Conclude: "God gave the Israelites rules to follow. These rules are called the Ten Commandments. We can and should follow these Commandments today. We can remember God wants people to worship Him only." Pray. Worship Through Exploration and Discovery Discover Whom to Worship Say: "God gave the Israelites rules to follow. These rules are called the Ten Commandments. We can and should follow these Commandments today. The first Commandment tells us to worship only God. Do you think we worship other things?" Encourage responses. It is OK if children do not know what to say. Remark: "Worship means 'to thank, praise, love, and obey God.' Sometimes people worship their stuff. This means the people spend too much time playing with or caring for their stuff. The people might even not come to church or worship God because they spend so much time with their stuff. Let's discover some things that people worship." Invite children to pull cards from the container. Read aloud each card as it is pulled. Say after each card with the word God is pulled: "Worship God only." Comment: "'Do not worship anyone or anything but God.' Exodus 20:3. God told the Israelites to worship only Him. Sometimes we think about other things too much. We might not want to come to church if we can't bring our favorite toys. We come to church to worship. We can play with those toys when we get home from church. Let's draw pictures of ways to worship God." Distribute paper and invite children to draw. Conclude: "Let's remember to worship only God."
