Saint Jude Catholic School www.stjudefw.org February 15, 2018 : Lenten Sacrifice with a Purpose As we enter into the season of Lent, it can be a challenge to set a meaningful Lenten commitment to prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Fr. Jake gave the students some good practical advice. What you do should be specific, achievable, meaningful, and doable for 40 days. Good advice...often times our goal is too big and we cannot follow through, so to do a smaller sacrifice and stick to it faithfully, will help make your sacrifice meaningful. I heard another priest, Fr. John Riccardo, on Redeemer Radio give a talk on Lenten sacrifice as well. His counsel was to give a purpose to your sacrifice. When we give up a favorite food or TV show as a Lenten sacrifice we could offer it for another person. Each time I don t watch the TV show, I think of a brother, neighbor or friend who is struggling with an issue. When I crave the food I have given up, I think of my aunt, grandmother, or sister who is suffering from cancer. This will help us to focus our sacrifice in the Christian spirit of thinking of others first and help them in their need. Through our sacrifice and prayer we can give meaning and purpose to the hidden sacrifices we make during Lent and then as Christ tells us in the Gospel your Father in heaven who sees in secret will repay you. I hope you all have a blessed and meaningful Lent. Lost and Found Our lost and found bin is over flowing. If you have been missing something, please have your son or daughter take a look at the tables in the main hallway, your lost item may be there. We will leave the tables up through Thursday, February 22 nd. After that date, any unclaimed items will be donated to the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Stay Healthy We have had a lot of illness at school the past 2 weeks. Students and staff have suffered everything from colds to the stomach flu. We are doing our best to encourage good practices. We are reminding the kids to cover their sneezes, wash their hands, eat healthy and get plenty of rest. We are also taking extra precautions in the classrooms by wiping down surfaces with Clorox wipes and disinfecting areas as best we can. Hopefully this will soon pass. No School February19th Monday, February 19 th, President s Day, is still scheduled as a day off. We did not need to use it as a make-up day. Enjoy the 3 day weekend! VISION STATEMENT Our vision for St. Jude Catholic School is to create a faith-filled academic community composed of students, parents, faculty, and staff which offers a Christ-centered education and embraces the uniqueness of all students to be life-long learners. St. Jude School Mission Statement St. Jude Catholic School community, a vital part of the St. Jude Catholic parish, is dedicated to educating each child spiritually, intellectually, emotionally culturally, and physically. STILL ACCEPTING REGISTRATIONS FOR PRE-K (4 s) AND KINDERGARTEN If you did not register for Pre-K or Kindergarten, we are still taking registrations in the school office. 2017-2018 ISTEP+ Part I and I-READ 3 Information February 26 - March 9 the students in grades 3-8 will participate in Part I of the Indiana Statewide Testing for Education Progress (ISTEP+). Part I includes questions on English/Language Arts and Math in grades 3-8. Grades 5 & 7 will also take a Social Studies portion while grades 4 & 6 will also take a Science portion. Grade 3 will also be required to complete I-READ 3 during the week of March 12 - March 16. Reminder: Come to school on time, eat a good breakfast, get plenty of sleep, and bring two #2 pencils. Please do not schedule dentist/doctor appointments or other away from school activities during this testing time because this makes it hard to test or have students make it up. NO SCHOOL MONDAY, FEBRUARY 19 TH PRESIDENT S DAY LENTEN RICE BOWLS The Lenten Season is upon us. It began on Ash Wednesday, February 14th. As a part of our Lenten Journey with the Lord, the students received a Rice Bowl to collect money for Catholic Relief Services. This project joins us with more than 13,000 Catholic communities across the U.S. in a life changing Lenten journey. Our own Bishop Kevin Rhoades is a member of the National CRS board and supports operation Rice bowl and encourages us to participate. Please encourage your child/ren to make special sacrifices during Lent and put the money in the Rice Bowl. You also can do this as a family. The Rice Bowls will be collected during Holy Week at our Agape Prayer Service. God bless each of you for doing this. 2018-2019 School Calendar Information As we inch closer to spring, we also look ahead to our next school year.
