Week 2: Shield of Faith David Defeats Goliath 13 Into the Bible Your Line-Up Kingdom Prep You will be exploring the story of David defeating the biggest+baddest enemy of all: Goliath. This is one of the most loved stories of the Bible because it shows how awesome our God is and how we can do the impossible if we just believe in Him! Your Bible Story: 1Samuel 17 Your Bible Activity: Kids write their fears and doubts in balls or paper airplane arrows and throw them at a shield they create with Bible verses and Faith! Your Craft: The Bully Shield: This shield is really just full of the reminders of who we are in God so when bullies say we are less than them, we can believe in our heart that we are who God says we are! The Tournament Game Shield Dodge-ball! Yep, it s how it sounds! Dodge-ball with a twist in that everyone has a cardboard shield they make themselves out of a cardboard box and creativity! Castle Gate Praise (10m): Welcome and sing: Counting on God, Trust and Obey, and Our God Knight s Training (15m): Explore the Bible story by having kids act it out; Bible Activity: you will split the children into two or more teams (about 5 children each). They will make shields and arrows/balls of fear. Black Smith Crafts (8m) Explain the craft you are making and encourage them to share stories. Sword Training (3m) Say the Bible verse while pretending use a sling Into the Wardrobe (11m) The Fauns faith catches up with him, and he decides to let Lucy go. Tournament Game (10m) Shield Dodgeball Castle Gate Praise (5m): Sing Counting on God Pray and Dismiss Remind kids to journal! Every week, you will need a TV or projector for the music DVD and for Narnia. You will need to find: Name Tags with Marker Paper (lined/scrap/etc) Markers or color pencils 1 Cut out cardboard Shield for each team of 5 children (approx.) Bibles One cardboard box per child (varied sizes) Balls for Dodgeball (you don t have to use playground issue- you can even use ping pong balls) Before kids arrive: Make sure markers or color pencils will write effectively on the cardboard shields. If not, use glue sticks to adhere construction paper on the shields. What s different about today? You ll notice less script and more you. We encourage you to stay in character, and be creative, but you really don t need to be staring at your script: engage with kids and make eye contact!

Castle Gate Praise Welcome to the Knights of God Training Academy, lords and ladies. This training academy is run by us knights to help you become strong in your faith and to place the armor of God on everyday! There are actually 6 pieces of Armor, and they are the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Bible, your shield of faith, helmet of salvation, belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, and your feet which share Jesus story with peace and love! Today, we are going to be focusing on our shield of Faith. What do we believe about who God is, and how does that change who we are and what we do? If I believe God can do anything, I m not going to be scared. If I believe that God created me to do amazing things, I m not going to waste away watching TV for 5 hours a day! And if I believe God loves me and wants to help me, I m going to count on God! Let s sing! 14 Sing Counting on God Awesome worshiping God, knights! We told our God and King that we love Him and trust Him because He alone can change our life! Speaking of changing lives, I wanted to let you know that you can change a life just with your offering. Even the smallest of gifts can add up to something that can give someone another chance at life, and let them hear about Jesus! (Take offering for special mission) Knights in training, we are going to focus on how much we rely on God and trust in him today. You see, God doesn t always ask us to do amazing things. Just like David, who was a shepherd learned, you need to trust and obey. God did, however, bring David an adventure which will hear about today, but it only happened because he trusted and obeyed! Sing Trust and Obey Other things to go over: Talk about a time when you weren t sure you could trust God, but you felt it in your heart that God was with you and that experience made your Faith strong! Review the Knights Code, in the index; Pray before going to Bible Training

Knight s Bible Training We are going to jump into the story of David, one of the bravest knights of all time. And he was also described as a man after God s own heart! If we are after God s heart, that means we are devoted to God, our King, no matter what happens. 15 Share that God had planned for David to be King Share that David had to stay behind, but got to visit his brothers Read aloud just 1 Samuel 17:8-15 Ask kids if they have ever felt left out or left behind like David Read 1 Samuel: 32-50 Ask kids to read along in their Bibles! Every time they read or hear you say Lord or God, they shout shield up and put their arm out like they are holding a shield. David had such an amazing adventure because he stepped out in faith. He didn t do that because he believed in himself. Everyone was telling him, he wasn t a knight. But he did believe in God. Our belief in God changing our actions is exactly what faith is. I m sure that David didn t wake up that morning looking for a giant to fight, just like we don t go looking for bullies. But when he saw one, he knew just what to do. Faith changes how we react to problems because it shields us from fears and doubts. Did anyone notice that almost no one believed in him? They tried to change him! That is what you probably sometimes feel at school when no one believes in God or makes fun of you for praying before lunch. To fight fears and doubts, you need a shield: faith! Shield of Faith- Start by splitting kids into teams of 5 and handing them their shields! Give kids markers to write down what they believe about God: that he created everything, loves us, saves us, hears our prayer, protects us, etc. Give children some pieces of lined paper. They write fears and doubts they face everyday from bullies, that they are lesser, worthless, etc. Crumple them in balls. Tell kids to throw the balls (or paper airplanes) at the other team. The shields stop them. When when we believe in Jesus, we know bullies words are lies. Pray that we stay strong and remember who we are based on what God says!

Blacksmith Crafts Welcome to the most creative part of your training, knights! And this is important because as a Knight of God, you have the ability to build your own armor! God made you creative and helps you get through your battles every day! Your battles are different from Davids, in that if you meet a bully at school, you can t actually fight him, and God wouldn t want you too! What you can do is deal with situations with bullies calmly while sharing how you feel, realizing all bullies are upset about something and don t know how to express it, and possibly avoiding them and ignoring them if they don t change their behavior. 16 The Bully S.H.I.E.L.D Show kindness While S.h.i.e.l.d. is cool, kids stories are more valuable! Ask kids to share their experiences and write them on the shield as well! Hold your ground; use your words to say this isn t right Introduce an alternative; if it's a conflict, offer a plan C Empathize; ask them if they are ok or are hurting Locate a teacher; if all else fails, protect your friends and you Deal with it peacefully, even if it does mean avoidance So we know that with our shield of faith and some great advice, we will be ready for any bully that might attack us, hoping that with Faith in God, we might be able to see their heart believe in God, and maybe then they could change their behavior, too! Sword Training Today s activity is very simple. Simple say the verse while pretending to throw a sling with one hand and hold a shield over your heart. The Bible memory verse is : Be strong and courageous, for God is always with you! When you get to the end of the verse, tell the kids to pretend to throw out the stone and imagine their big problems crashing to the ground as they have faith and remember God is with them.

Step into the Wardrobe Well, knights, it s finally time to step into the world beyond the wardrobe: that s right! We are going back to Narnia to discover how 4 children become knights with faith, righteousness, and truth! So last week we saw Lucy enter a strange new world, and we told you that even though she didn t know it yet, she was entering a new story! Today, we discover something about the Faun- that he may not be such a friend. But he does believe in Aslan, the true king who would want to keep Lucy safe. Let s see if Mr. Tumnus the faun believes enough to change his mind and the direction of the future. Let s start back a little bit to where Mr. Tumnus finds out something about Lucy. Watch from 16:00 when Lucy says I m a girl Stop at 24:35 when Lucy comes out of the wardrobe Questions: When Mr. Tumnus found out Lucy was a girl, he had the plan of kidnapping her. But then he saw Aslan in the fire, and knew in his heart it was wrong. How did his faith in Aslan change him? Was he scared to do what was right? Did he do it anyway? Even though there were spies, when they were running away, were they safe? Sometimes our faith is going to challenge us, which means it s going to shield off not doubts from others, but our own doubts- and sometimes not other people s sins, but our own. We all need faith to keep from falling into bad choices and to stand strong. 17 Tournament Games Easy Steps for quick set up! Keep balls in a bag before you begin and out of sight while giving directions Kids shields do not have to look medieval; they can squeeze themselves in the box if they want Make sure some kids pick the small boxes so you can make a point later! Count real quick and only offer as many boxes as children Keep the focus on faith and growing that faith big enough to protect us all? As you think on that, how are you growing your shield stronger?

Tournament Games So we all know we need out shield to protect us, and that our friends may ask us why we believe in God or make fun of us. And we can believe, but we need to create and build our faith! It s great you believe what you believe, and Jesus actually said simple faith is the most powerful. But what happens when we watch TV more than read our Bible or go to church? What happens if we stop praying because God didn t answer one of our prayers? What happens when our faith shrinks? Offer shields to children, but make sure some get the small ones! Ask them to switch it up 4 minutes in; play for another 3 minutes Sit down and ask children which shield is better. If we know we are going to be attacked, we need to build as big as a shield as possible through prayer, Bible reading, and taking chances to do right. No matter what happens- believe! 18 Castle Gate Praise Closing Well, knights in training, another piece of armor has been discovered and we found out that a shield can protect us from many things. I want you to leave here today knowing that you stand for God, but God is what helps you stand strong. God gives us faith to do the impossible in the fear of the situation. Some of you may not know that Jesus, God s son, came to earth to die on the cross for our sins. Even though Jesus rose from the dead, it was still painful and he needed to have faith in God s plan, too. And He did. His faith helped Him die, rise again, and erase our Sin. David always had a way of describing God when he knew God was big and was with him. The God of Angels armies; God is on our side to be there when giants come! Sing Our God Dear God, thank you so much for being so great, so powerful, and so loving that we desire time with you and feel protected! We want to be brave, because we BELIEVE you are here with us! Make our faith strong in You every day! Amen! Dismiss Greet parents and remind kids to journal; play Counting on God for the kids who are waiting for parents
