Sholosh Seudot Halacha Discussion Reuven had an expensive Mercedes he wanted to sell, so he hung a For Sale sign on it and waited for the fish to bite. One day, when he was driving along, he was stopped by someone named Shimon who was interested in buying his car. I am the chauffer of a great and holy Kabbalist, said Shimon. I need a new car for the Tzaddik. You would have a great merit if you sold it to me. Your car would become like the Aron Kodesh that carried the luchos. Gladly, said Reuven, and named the catalogue price for his new car. Listen, said Shimon. The great merit of having your car used by such a Tzaddik is also worth something. You will have a portion in all the mitzvos he does, everywhere he goes. Why not knock a third off the price? Reuven was soon convinced and sold Shimon the car at a discounted price. Just a month later, Reuven went to a used car dealer and asked to see an expensive, fancy car. You came just at the right time, said the used car dealer. I ve got something really special for you. This gorgeous Mercedes is a fantastic car with a special blessing on it. It was used by a great and holy Kabbalist. The dealer showed Reuven the car, which of course was none other than the very car he had sold to Shimon just a month ago. Who sold you this car? asked Reuven. I bought it from another used car dealer, who happens to also be the Kabbalist s chauffeur. The price of the used car dealer asked from Reuven was of course not a penny less than the catalogue price, with no discount. Reuven s face turned red with anger. He called Shimon on the phone and began to berate him. How dare you lie to me like that! He said. I gave you a third off the price so that the Kabbalist would use the car, and you turn around and sell it? You had better give me back the money I discounted from the price or return my car. Relax, said Shimon. It was a fair deal and I am not giving you back anything. I told you the Kabbalist would use your car and indeed he did, for the whole month, for which you have a great merit, did I promise he would use it for the next five to ten years? Who is Right?
