My Brothers and Sisters, Last weekend at the 4:00PM and 9:00AM Masses, I spoke about a wonderful little book that I was exposed to while graduate studies/seminary: it s a short work called The Practice of the Presence of God and is actually a compilation of conversations with and letters of a French Carmelite monk who lived in the early 1600 s and who was known simply as Brother Lawrence. Brother Lawrence was quite an uncomplicated man who, after serving as a soldier and being injured, entered the monastery and spent the rest of his days working in the kitchen and repairing his fellow bothers sandals. He was a simple worker, not known to be a great theologian but he has had quite an impact on me over the years in helping me develop a habit of prayer which I have found to be quite comfortable and natural. My focus on The Practice of the Presence of God in my homily was because of the extraordinarily challenging first verse of last Sunday s Gospel: Jesus told his disciples a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary (Luke 18:1). At first glance, the ideal of praying always seemed to me to be downright impossible, until I read Brother Lawrence s insights. You see, I thought that the Lord s Gospel challenge was virtually impossible because I had thought of prayer in a very narrow, compartmentalized way: prayer was when I prayed the Divine Office, or participated in Mass, or said the Rosary, or attended a prayer meeting. There were specific times in my day for prayer and then there was the rest of the day. Simply put, Brother Lawrence encourages the disciple to weave prayer throughout his or her entire day. This is done first by working on recognizing the presence of God in all things; all around us (and not just when we come into church, or kneel down to say our prayers. Recognizing God all around us, and indeed within us with every breath we take, is something that St. Ignatius of Loyola made the foundation stone of spirituality for his Jesuits, as he encouraged them to find God in all things in his Spiritual Exercises. Once we begin to appreciate the presence of God with us constantly, it becomes natural to converse with God as if we re having a conversation with our best friend or our loving father (because that s exactly who God is!). We share with God our hopes, our dreams, our challenges, our frustrations, our fears in an ongoing conversation throughout the day. This method of prayer has become second nature to me since my days in seminary and has become a great strength to me. It doesn t replace other methods of prayer, or the Mass, or particular devotions but it helps me continue that sense of being in communication and solidarity with God throughout the day. I still have a long way to go in achieving the goal of praying always without becoming weary but Brother Lawrence has certainly been a great help to me in moving along the road toward achieving this goal by practicing the presence of God! For more information of The Practice of the Presence of God (you can even download a copy free of charge) go to http://thepracticeofthepresenceofgod.com/. Grace, mercy and peace, Rev. Charles G. Pastoral Council Corner Did You Know? The Parish Pastoral Council continues to present brief explanations of the Communion of Saints Stained Glass Window over the altar. We encourage parishioners to take in the beauty of the window and experience the wisdom of God teaching us through the historical lives of these leaders of Catholic faith. Window: The Communion of Saints Window (when facing the Altar beginning at the far left) Christ The King ~ Panel 7 During the Holy Year of 1925, Pope Pius XI instituted the Feast of Christ the King. It is now celebrated on the last Sunday of the liturgical year (November 20, 2016), summing up our belief that Jesus Christ is King of Heaven and Earth. Pope Pius XI also pointed out that He is King of the hearts of all mankind, because of His love for us and His merciful forgiveness of our sins. The Feast of Christ the King is a yearly reminder that Jesus awaits us in the Kingdom of Heaven, the dwelling-place which God has prepared for our eternal happiness. Grief Support Group Monday, October 24th @ 2:30PM in the Parish Office Conference Room. Everyone grieves the death of a loved one in a different way. Through their death, we ourselves, become different people and see the events of our world with different eyes. We become more aware of the suffering, loss, emptiness and isolation that takes place in so many lives that experience such pain. Often there are no words to express these feelings so we become agents of compassion, led by the Holy Spirit to minister to one another. For more information call Bobbie @ 602-615-7987. Serving The Homebound If you have a family member who is homebound and would like visits, communion, anointing, and/or confession, contact Bobbie Stich in the Pastoral Care Ministry Office @ 602-586-7429.
