Service of Worship Third Sunday after Epiphany January 22, 2017 Eleven o clock in the morning Bridging Faith and Learning Calling Disciples, by He Qi This morning s Scripture readings speak to us of the power and necessity of belonging to Christ. In Matthew s Gospel, Jesus calls for repentance and proclaims the coming Kingdom of God. He calls his first disciples Peter, Andrew, James, and John who leave everything behind to follow him. In his letter to the church at Corinth, the apostle Paul exhorts his readers to reject divisions in the body of Christ. He invites the church both then and now to identify only with Jesus, whose cross is the source of true power.

The Chapel welcomes families with children; if at any time during the service your child needs a place for active play, please know there is a nursery in the Chapel basement. On this Communion Sunday, families with children are invited to sit up front, so they can better observe The Great Thanksgiving. The congregation is invited to reflect silently during the prelude as a time of prayer and meditation. Gathering Carillon Prelude Suite in the 2 nd Tone Jean-Adam Guilain Prélude (fl. 1702 1739) Tierce en taille Duo Basse de Trompette Trio de Flûtes Choral Introit Heavenly Light Alexander Kopylof (1854 1911) arr. Peter J. Wilhousky Sent from heaven, thy rays were given on great and small to shine, O Light Divine! May each soul in sorrow s night see the heavenly light! Thou blessing to all creation, lead us to our salvation! All those whose feet may falter, lead unto the sacred altar! Oh, shine from above, Divine Light of love! Show us the way unto our God, we pray! Thou our beacon and guide shall be! Light Divine, we praise thee! Greeting and Announcements -Trad. Orthodox, trans. Alice Mattullath *Processional Hymn 223 (found in the hymnals located in the pew racks) Break Forth, O Beauteous Heavenly Light ermuntre dich *Prayer of Confession and Words of Assurance (in unison) Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways to the glory of your name. Amen. The minister speaks words of assurance. *Peace (All exchange signs and words of God s peace.)

Proclamation Prayer for Illumination (in unison) God of power, whose Son revealed in signs and miracles the wonder of your coming Kingdom: stir our hearts by the illumination of your holy word; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. New Testament Lesson 1 Corinthians 1:10 18 (NT pages 155 6) Lector: This is the word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. *Gradual Hymn 398 (stanzas 1 2) Jesus Calls Us (All turn to face the Gospel Procession.) *Gospel Lesson Matthew 4:12 23 (NT page 3) Lector: This is the word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. *Gradual Hymn 398 (stanzas 3 5) Jesus Calls Us Sermon The Problem of Belonging Response Mission of the Month Call to Prayer Minister: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Minister: Let us pray. Prayers of the People (The congregation responds to each petition: Hear our prayer. ) Offertory Anthem The Lord is My Light and My Salvation galilee galilee John Rutter (b. 1945) The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom then shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom then shall I be afraid? Though an host of men were laid against me, yet shall not my heart be afraid: and though there rose up war against me, yet will I put my trust in him. One thing have I desired of the Lord, which I will require: even that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the fair beauty of the Lord, and to visit his temple. For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his tabernacle: yea, in the secret place of his dwelling he shall hide me, and set me up upon a rock of stone. Therefore will I offer in his dwelling an oblation with great gladness: I will sing, and speak praises unto the Lord.

Hearken unto my voice, O Lord, when I cry unto thee: have mercy upon me, and hear me. My heart hath talked of thee, Seek ye my face: thy face, Lord, will I seek. O hide not thou thy face from me, nor cast thy servant away in displeasure. Thou hast been my succor: leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation. When my father and my mother forsake me, the Lord taketh me up. Be strong, and he shall comfort thine heart; and put thou thy trust in the Lord. *Doxology -Psalm. 27:1, 3 5, 6a, 7 10, 14 lasst uns erfreuen Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Alleluia, Alleluia! Praise God above, ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia. Thanksgiving and Communion *The Great Thanksgiving (Musical setting A, found on page 17 in the hymnal.) *The Lord s Prayer (All are encouraged to pray the Lord s Prayer in the language of their choosing. The English version is number 895 in the hymnal.) Sharing of the Bread and Wine All who love Christ, earnestly repent of their sins, and seek to be at peace with God and neighbor are invited to receive Communion. Wine is used for Communion. Chapel Announcements Today s Flowers Flowers for today s worship service are given to the glory of God by the Nan & Taylor Cole Chapel Endowment. Today s Offering All of today s cash offerings and undesignated checks will be used to support Duke Chapel s sponsorship of a Habitat for Humanity home, with the Duke Student Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Duke Habitat is one of the largest and most active student organizations on campus. Families selected by Habitat work closely with volunteers, investing 240 300 hours of their own labor, or sweat equity, in building their homes. Because partner families and Duke students do nearly 80% of the work on Habitat homes, a Duke Chapter house fosters close connections between the students of Duke University and the people of Durham. Student Preacher Submissions All undergraduate students are welcome to apply to be this year s Student Preacher. Sermons should be based on one or more of the lectionary scripture texts for Sunday, April 2, and should be on a topic deemed appropriate to the worship context. To apply, please email a draft sermon by January 27 to the Rev. Bruce Puckett at bruce.puckett@duke.edu. Interfaith Art Exhbit Beyond Bridges is an interfaith visual art exhibition that will be on display in the Chapel s nave February 5 to 26. It showcases 21 works by Arab, Persian, and Jewish contemporary artists from countries of Muslim, Christian, and Jewish backgrounds. Its theme is what bridges people to one another, as well as what the three faiths of the artists hold in common across their different creeds and cultures. Sullivan Award Nominations are now being accepted for the prestigious Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. It will be presented in April, 2017 to a Duke graduating senior and to a Duke University or Duke Health faculty member, staff person, or graduate/professional student who exhibits selflessness, generosity of service, nobility of character, integrity, and a depth of spirituality. For the past eight years, students involved with the Chapel s student outreach have received the student award.
