First United Methodist Church of Portland ORDER OF WORSHIP May 11, 2014 n Mother s Day

The Order of Worship Sunday, May 11, 2014 Fourth Sunday of Easter Mother s Day Congregational portions of prayers and responses are in bold type. To avoid disturbing other worshippers, please silence cell phones and pagers. Please stand, if standing is comfortable. For hymns, please stand at the beginning of the last line of the hymn introduction. Carillon Chorus Organ Prelude Gwashlmei (Welsh Hymn Tune) Richard Purvis Jonas Nordwall, organist Organ Chimes Living & Growing in Faith Sharing the Peace of Christ Allison Anderson, Lay Leader Choral Introit Call to Worship Allison Anderson, Lay Leader The spirit of God gathers us from many places: some of us come from busy homes with many people, some of us live alone. We gather to start a new week as part of the family of Christ: some of us have had happy news we want to celebrate, some of us have faced grief and need a place to cry. In this gathering, we celebrate our connections between and beyond: all of us seeking God s presence in our lives, all of us seeking God s presence in each other. Together we sing as one family, joined together in praise of God s Creation. Hymn No. 158 Come, Christians, Join to Sing

Reception of New Members Shelly Edwards, Jessica Kimmet First United Methodist Church is a welcoming, open community where there is always room for one more! Today it is our great pleasure to invite newcomers to officially join us. You have decided to join with this congregation of Portland s First Church, and to share with us a mindful spiritual journey. Just as early Christians were known as followers of The Way, we seek to be a faithful community moving through this life together. We ask you now these questions: To the New Members Will you join with us to follow the model of Jesus: to bring love and justice to all of God s creation; to love both the powerless and the powerful; and to seek to bring wholeness to all of humanity? I will. Will you join with us and with the United Methodist Church, to explore questions of Christian faith through the Wesleyan perspective, combining personal holiness and social justice? I will. Will you join with us in support of this community of faith through your prayers, your presence, your gifts, your service, and your witness, so that together we may grow stronger in expressing God s love for all creation? I will. To the Congregation Will you join with these persons - to learn from them and to learn with them, growing in the expression of our Christian faith, and affirming the presence of God s grace encompassing us all? We give thanks for you and we recognize you as our newest partners on the journey of faith. We will learn from you and learn with you. Together with you we will bring our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service and our witness to build up this community and to share God s love for all. Blessing May the God of all grace, who calls us into being with love, establish you now and continue to guide you on The Way of Jesus, the Way of God s love and hope. Amen. A Conversation with Our Children Children s Story Prayer... and all God s children said, Amen. Anne Kayser Hymn No. 2179 (The Faith We Sing) Live in Charity

She restores my soul, She rights my wrongs, She leads me in a path of good things, And fills my heart with songs. Even though I walk, through a dark and dreary land, There is nothing that can shake me, She has said, She won t forsake me, I m in Her hand. She sets a table before me, in the presence of my foes, She anoints my head with oil, and my cup overflows. Surely, surely goodness and kindness will follow me, All the days of my life, and I will live in Her house, Forever, forever and ever. Glory be to our Mother, and Daughter, And to the Holy of Holies, as it was in the beginning, Is now and ever shall be, world with end. Amen. Offertory Love Is of God by Austin C. Lovelace Beloved, let us love: For love is of God; In God alone has love its true abode. Beloved, let us love: For those who love, They only are children born from above. Beloved, let us love: For love is light, And those who do not love still live in night. For only thus shall we see God, the Lord Who first loved us. Beloved, let us love. music notes
