Padre s Corner September 30, 2018 Twenty Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Obstructions are a part of life whether it be physically, emotionally, relationally, morally, violently, peacefully, and even out of good intentions. Patients may go for a cardiac procedure expecting a stent for the removal of blockages, and that would be a good thing to allow the medical profession to do. Parents worry about their children and will put up protective walls to prevent them from falling into bad traps involving persons (unhealthy relationships), places (bars or casinos for those having addictive personalities), and things (drugs, alcohol, bad weapons). Spiritual authors such as Saint Augustine knew well the moral pitfalls any of us can fall into, the deeper one wants to serve God especially if a charismatic nature is involved that easily inspires others. We may be called at times to obstruct a living force that threatens another living being. (In 1985 I was a telephone company employee taking a date to an Irish festival. Along Route 9W in Rockland County a young woman was being trailed by a creepy individual, before she ran up a driveway toward a wooded area to escape these human clutches. I used my car to force an end to this potential horror story, and drove her with my date to a safe place. Recently at Downing Park an isolated brown duck was being attacked by a large amount of mallard ducks, who seemed to be taking advantage of some sort of head wound. Moondoggie to the rescue to drive the attackers away, as the hurting duck was steered towards safer grounds.) Citizens at times rise up in peace and with good intentions to preserve the sacredness of life that God has created for us. (In late April the Vatican appealed to a hospital in Liverpool, England to release an alleged brain-damaged infant into its care. Pope Francis energetically supported the parents of Alfie, Tom and Kate James, in offering to save the boy of twenty-three months. Even the government of Italy offered citizenship, attempting to stop the obstruction of the hospital to deny parental rights which wished to keep their son alive with alternative strategies. Those good efforts were vanquished by the evil response of doctors to deny all that hope. We can expect more of these types of heartless decisions in a world that denies the sanctity of the unborn child and the elderly.) A song comes to mind from 1966 in the British film "Alfie," by the title "What's It All About Alfie" composed for the film by iconic musicians Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Alfie faces the same questions about a confusing and cruel world that this boy faced recently in a Liverpool hospital. In this case, however, life does not imitate art. The actor lives while the baby died. God asks us to transcend these obstructions with His help through prayer, sacramental participation, wholesome friendships, and His holy grace. Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) wrote this philosophical essay: "Each man has his own vocation. The talent is the call. There is one direction in which all space is open to him. He has faculties silently inviting thither to endless exertion. He is like a ship in the river; he runs against obstructions on every side but one; on that side all obstruction is taken away, and he sweeps serenely over a deepening channel into an infinite sea... When life has been well spent, age is a loss of what it can well spare, - muscular strength, organic instincts, gross bulk, and works that belong to these. But the central wisdom, which was old in infancy, is young in four score years, and dropping off obstructions, leaves in happy subjects the mind purified and wise." Henry David Thoreau the famous essayist of "Walden" (1817-1862) reflected this gem: "It would be well, perhaps, if we were to spend more of our days and nights without any obstruction between us and the celestial bodies, if the poet did not speak so much from under a roof, or the Saint dwell there so long. Birds do not sing in caves, nor do doves cherish their innocence in dovecotes." Father Anthony de Mello (1931-1987) was a Jesuit priest and psychotherapist from India. I close with this wise concept penned by him: "Understand the obstructions you are putting in the way of love, freedom, and happiness and they will drop. Turn on the light of awareness and the darkness will disappear. Happiness is not something you acquire; love is not something you produce; love is not something you have; love is something that has you. Father Bill

TODAY TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINASRY TIME First Reading: Numbers 11:25-29 Two men not considered prophets by the people began to prophesize, and this offended those who did not feel they were true prophets. He claims the wealth they have dishonestly collected will be a testimony against them on judgment day. Gospel: Mark 9:38-43, 45, 47-48 Jesus explains to his disciples that it is acceptable for a person who is not part of their group to speak in his name, but he does warn them that anyone who tries to lead his followers astray will be severely punished. Jesus also discusses personal failing and the importance of taking whatever steps are necessary to avoid them.
