THE 10 COMMANDMENTS

Series: The 10 Commandments Setting... God delivers his people from Egyptian slavery Great miracles and God s power displayed People gather at the foot of Mount Sinai Amidst fire and smoke God speaks... The Law, Jesus, and how it applies to us Jesus came to fulfill the Law & its requirements The law summed up Love God, love others The law acts like an MRI it shows us what's wrong but does not fix the problem Romans 3:19-24

Rom 3:19-24... 19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. 20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin. 21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

Deut. 5:17 The 6 th Commandment 17 You shall not murder.

You shall not murder... Pretty straight forward, right? 3 Questions we need to answer today... 1. What is at the heart of this command? 2. What does the need for this command reveal about our hearts? 3. How can we apply this to our lives today?

1. Why is this in the Big 10? a. God has Given Special Value to Human Life People are made in God s image and have been set apart from the rest of creation (Gen. 1:26-31)

Genesis 1:26-31 26 Then God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.

1. Why is this in the Big 10? a. God has Given Special Value to Human Life People are made in God s image and have been set apart from the rest of creation (Gen. 1:26-31) God is the one who has determined your value Murder is a direct sin against God because we bear his image ALL human life is equally valuable Children, adults, people with disabilities or deformities, big people, small people, nice people, bad people, unborn people, born people, young and old people

1. Why is this in the Big 10? a. God has Given Special Value to Human Life b. It s the minimum God wants us to love another and not killing someone is literally the least we can do God is not impressed with you simply because you haven t physically murdered anyone Righteousness does not come through the law Gal. 2:21... I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing! God doesn t want us to simply not kill people, he wants us to love them!

2. What does this command reveal? We have murderous hearts a. Contempt murder with our mouths Jesus explains the commandment (Matt 5:21-24)

Matt 5:21-24... 21 You have heard that it was said to those of old, You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment. 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, You fool! will be liable to the hell of fire. 23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

2. What does this command reveal? We have murderous hearts a. Contempt murder with our mouths Jesus explains the commandment (Matt 5:21-24) Many of us have an anger problem and our mouths have become murder weapons James 3:6-10... Poison tongues

James 3:6-10... 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. 7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.

2. What does this command reveal? We have murderous hearts a. Contempt murder with our mouths Jesus explains the commandment (Matt 5:21-24) Many of us have an anger problem and our mouths have become murder weapons James 3:6-10... Poison tongues God s image in us is not just physical God s desire from this command is healthy relationships with others (love on another) If we have issues with others, we need to seek reconciliation with them

2. What does this command reveal? We have murderous hearts a. Contempt murder with our mouths b. Hate murder with our hearts 1 John 3:14-18; 4:19-21

1 John 3:14-18... 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death. 15 Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him. 16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.

1 John 4:19-21... 19 We love because he first loved us. 20 Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. 21 And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.

3. How does this command apply to us today? a. We re all guilty of breaking this command b. We need to value human life... ALL human life, including your own! c. Love is at the heart Contempt, hate, bitterness, condemnation, unforgiveness must be rooted out Repentance & forgiveness essential Reconciliation must be sought after

3. How does this command apply to us today? a. We re all guilty of breaking this command b. We need to value human life... ALL human life, including your own! c. Love is at the heart d. We must look to Jesus and trust him to do the work in us God s heart is that we don t try to tear down another physically, emotionally, mentally or spiritually, but rather to build them up in love The love you need can only come from Jesus
