A Publication of The Shrine Treasurers Association STA Ledger November 2017 Volume 21Issue 1 Special Dates to Remember March 23 through March 26 2018 STA Mid-winter Meeting Tampa, FL July 14,2018 STA Annual Meeting Daytona Beach, FL July 15 through July 19 2018 Imperial Session Daytona Beach, FL Inside this issue: AJ Bovio 1st Vice President 2 Bill Wheeler 2nd Vice President 3 Bruce Wiggins 3rd Vice President 4 Vic Hooper 4thVice President 5 Robert the Bob Bulman Secretary-Treasurer 6-7 Nick Baldi President Thank you to those in attendance at our mid year meeting in Daytona Beach. The STA meeting started with a great breakfast, the Imperial line came in and introduced themselves and Imperial Sir Chris Smith who informed us again how important the STA and the Treasurers (CFO S are to the success of our Shrine center and the Fraternal organization. Thanks to Bob Bulman who made the mid-year happen! We are already planning the STA meeting in Tampa, March 23 thru 26. Our goal is to have 100 treasurers present at this meeting (my lady Kay is planning some educational and fun events for the ladies). So please get these dates on your calendar. Shrine! Has your temple paid the 2017 STA dues? Congratulations to Imperial Sir Gary Bergenske and the Imperial line. Imperial Sir Gary is definitely leading us towards increasing our fraternal membership. He laid the ground work with his goal of bringing in 12,000 new members this year (actually July 2017 thru July 2018). I hope each of has seen his challenge by Shrine center of what it will take to achieve this goal. During his Pageant at the Shiners International Imperial Session in July, 2017, Imperial Sir Gary Bergenske announced a call to action, asking ALL Shriners to take a stand to support the membership of the fraternity. This includes the referral of friends, family members and coworkers for further contact, education and information about Shriners International and Freemasonry Remember membership is our key to success! Kay and I want to thank each of you and your ladies for what you do for the Shrine! Fraternally yours Nick Baldi President STA Ararat Shrine Kansas City, MO

attended every Treasurers Seminar and left with a wealth of information which not only helps me in performing my Treasurers duties but also benefits my Shrine Center Anthony (AJ) Bovio 1st Vice President What a great Imperial session and congratulations to Imperial Sir Gary Bergenske for his installation as Imperial potentate. I hope everyone enjoyed their week and as always it was great seeing everyone and talking about what is going on at everyone s shrine center. I am anticipating our upcoming March seminar to be a great learning experience that will assist us in performing our duties at our Shrine Center. This year your officers will be contacting all the Shrine Centers Treasures to encourage their attendance (goal of 100 attendees) at the March meeting. I have been Treasure of Azan for 8 years and we have attended every Treasurers Seminar and left with a wealth of information which not only helps me in performing my Treasurers duties but also benefits my Shrine Center. It is my opinion that not only do you get to learn from the presenters but you get to interface with your fellow Treasurers and share valuable information. I am looking forward to our March meeting and the camaraderie we share while learning. Be Safe and God Bless Anthony (AJ) Bovio Azan Shriners Page 2

Bill Wheeler 2nd Vice President This is your opportunity to share ideas with one another and take back what you have learned at the seminar and apply it at your Temple. This is also a learning opportunity for Treasurer Ladies to learn the importance of Treasurers fiduciary responsibility. This is also a learning opportunity for Treasurer Ladies to learn the importance of Treasurers fiduciary responsibility Page 3 Nobles, To continue our comradeship, as was enjoyed by Lady Brent and I at our last meeting in Daytona Beach, Florida, prior to the Shriners International 143th Imperial session, we must prepare our 2018 Temple Budget. Remember to include in your Budget the Treasurers Association dues of $150. payable to "Shrine Treasurers Association" and due at the beginning of each calendar year. Your STA Officers have agreed to contact as many of you as possible, to insure you have the knowledge to be in attendance at our next Mid-Winter Seminar March 24-26, 2018 at the Tampa Westshore Holiday Inn Airport in Tampa, Florida. Speaking of Budget, Shriners International Bylaws Budget Process created a uniform, comprehensive and all inclusive system to manage all of the assets, liabilities and net assets of Temples through the budget process. The Temple Budget, approved by the Temple Nobility, has an operating budget with disclosure of all income of the Temple from whatever source and all expenses of the temple for whatever purpose. Be sure to check out our Web Site: shrinetreasurers.org often for useful information we all can use. We hope each of you have a safe trip to Tampa. Lady Brent and I look forward to meeting and greeting you. Yours in the Faith Bill Wheeler, 2nd VP STA Cahaba Shriners

Bruce Wiggins 3rd Vice President The Imperial Session was also very informative with a lot of changes especially with the new way we elect our new members. If you have not read the new ruling please do so. My personal feeling on the session as a total, it was one of better Imperial Sessions that I have attended. a lot of changes especially with the new way we elect our new members Greeting to my Fellow Treasurer's and Nobles Hopefully everyone had the opportunity to attend the Imperial Session in Daytona Beach and the STA meeting on Sunday morning. We had a good informative meeting with our new president Nick Baldi and all of the Imperial Line that stopped by our meeting after the Great breakfast we had at the Hilton Hotel, the breakfast was reason enough to attend the meeting. NEWS FOR THE 2018 STA MEETING, as your officers we are making plans to have a bigger and better meeting for 2018. We are attempting to contact every Temple and Treasurer to make plans to attend our next meeting. It will be in Tampa again next year at the Holiday Inn were they treat us like Kings and Queens. Make plans now for you and your lady to attend the 2018 STA meeting. Fraternally yours Bruce Wiggins 3rd Vice President STA Rizpah Temple Page 4

Vic Hooper 4th Vice President are now stating into fall and I hope each Temple has all their financials complete and their 990 s filed or if you filed extensions you are in the process of completing them before the November deadline. 100 Temples at our mid-winter meeting Dear Fellow Treasurers, First, I would like to extend thoughts and prayers to those in Texas and Florida, and the surrounding areas who just went through the devastating hurricanes that caused so much sorrow and destruction along their path. I hope everyone made it through safely and didn t have any damages. Summer is over and we In closing, I would like to say we are hoping to have at least 100 Temples at our mid-winter meeting n Tampa, March 23rd 26th 2018. We are trying to contact each Temple with hopes that ALL of our fellow Treasurers can make it to this very informative important meeting. Until next time, I remain, Yours in the Faith, Vic Hopper, Jr., P.P., Treasurer El Hasa Shrine Center 4th VP STA Page 5

Robert the Bob Bulman Secretary-Treasurer Recently I came across and article in our local Newspaper (yes I still read the paper) written by Ray Hull (a professor of communication sciences at Wichita State University) In his article he asked some very interesting questions, such as: What is a leader? Who are the leaders in your Shrine O get those suggestions in place and working deal with meandering discussions Page 6 How s your Leadership at your Shrine? Do you have effective leaders on your Divan? I m sure that all of us want to be successful in our positions as CFO s of our Shrine. So are you and effective leader? Remember you are one of seven that govern your Shrine, but are we effective? Are we able to be truly effective not being that person whom others look up to? Is it you What is a leader? What are the characteristics of Leaders? In reviewing literature on the topic of leadership, he came across several characteristics that were consistently found in leaders. He said Leadership isn t about the position you hold. Many people have been assigned leadership positions when they have no reason to be there. He said I ve heard people say, I know a leader when I see one. But then they can t describe what a leader is. Well, if you can t describe a leader, will you ever be one? He went on to list 13 traits of becoming a leader. Continued on page 7

Continued from page 6 Robert the Bob Bulman Secretary-Treasurer Stay away from voicing your frustration, stay positive on your comments www.shrinetreasurers.org Page 7 The 13 characteristics include: -Bing respectful; being intuitive; -Being an effective and open communicator; -Being a good listener; -Being respectful of those with whom you work; -Being honest; -Being an innovator; -Being one who will sacrifice time and effort to support those with whom one works; -Giving honest praise and compliments to your associates and employees; -Being interested in serving others rather than yourself; -Being a creative problem-solver -Being one who inspires co-workers by your example. He went on to make several other points: Leaders take risks, leaders push themselves hard for the good of the organization, they listen willingly, they tell the truth, and go out of their way to make the organization a fun place to be. He stated, One reason why many so-called leaders are distrusted today is that they are seen as self-serving Primarily interested in themselves rather than others. To be an effective and respected leader, it is critical to develop good habits in working with people all those who we work with, all those we serve, not just our inner circle. An effective leader is there for all the people, is willing to sacrifice time and effort for the good of the organization and the people there, and shows unbridled confidence with those they serve.
