cover profile The Grand Old Rotarian S.B. ANAND The discipline that my father observes where his health is concerned is admirable. His morning walk at Kamala Nehru Park and light vegetarian meals during the day is the secret to his fitness, which he practises even now! He is also a great fan of cricket and watched Test matches at the Brabourne Stadium. However, his main admirable traits are contentment, punctuality, honesty, dedication and integrity. These are the precious gifts that I have received from him and I am proud to be Satya Bhushan Anand's daughter. It is with pleasure that I write to compliment a long-term friend Rtn Satya Bhushan Anand. We have been very close to each other and have shared many experiences together as a part of Rotary. Bhushan was born on 17th February, 1923 in Bhera, then in undivided India (now in Pakistan). His family came to live in Mumbai when he was three years old. After obtaining a BCom degree from Sydenham College, Mumbai, he established a business in auto parts called K.L. Anand & Sons, which is based at Opera House. He married Pushpa in 1947 and they have four children. Rtn Satya Bhushan is a loving father. His daughter Rashmi, says, Daddy/Daddyji/Nanaji as he is fondly called by all his family members has batted a long innings and is just 7 runs short of his century! The Grand Patriarch of the Anand family, he is highly respected by members of all ages. As a young dynamic teenager, he was an actor in a theatre company in Mumbai (then Bombay). When India was in the midst of the freedom struggle, he participated in the long marches at Gowalia Tank Maidan for the Quit India Movement. He was presented with a badge from the Government for being a freedom fighter. I remember he joined the Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town in 1968. Being extremely friendly by nature, he was very popular at the club. Lots of Sunday lunches and dinners were hosted by him at his home. His motto being service above self, he was always ready to serve Rotary and the society. His kindness and his desire to help others are some of the many qualities that I have learnt from him. A Rotarian of 48 years standing he started as a Charter Member of the Rotary Club of Bombay Mid- Town, and served as President in 1972-73. Bhushan has served the Rotary Club of Bombay Mid- Town in various capacities as Office Bearer and as Chairman of several committees. He is a truly dedicated Rotarian. He has counselled Rotary Exchange Students. He has also chaired the Scholarships & Awards Committee for many years. He has maintained 100% attendance for a length of time. He was also the President of the Bombay & Maharashtra Motor Parts Associations. Now, 48 years later, we are a more vibrant, active and fun-loving group, and are even more dedicated. Some of the faces have changed, but our goal remains the same to serve those in need through hard work and community leadership, says the grand old man. President R.P. Rtn Anand stated that RCBMT shall continue to support the school. Ajgaonkar showed the delegation albums of the previous visits by members of the Rotary Club. This brought back memories of RCBMT's continuous support to the school over several decades. She led the entourage to inspect the various sections and activities of the school, including computer training, the science laboratory, the Braille class, the library, the hobby centre, the music and dance venue and the gymnasium. news A Few Rotarians visit Vietnam And Cambodia Later, we also visited the Terrace of Elephants, the Terrace of the Leper Kings, the Courtyard and other magnificent ruins of ancient temples. We also visited Angkor Wat, the crown jewel of Khmer architecture and one of the largest, best preserved Vishnu temples. The Ramayana and the Mahabharata are pictorially depicted along its long corridors. It was a pleasure to listen to our ancient stories from the Cambodian guide. All of us enjoyed the tour immensely and departed with promises to organise many more such tours. I thank Anil Kejriwal for organising this trip. Dr. Kirit Mody Seventeen Rotarians and Anns, under the leadership of Anil Kumar Kejriwal and Gaurav Kapadia of the Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-Town, took a trip to Vietnam and Cambodia for 9 days. Our first destination was Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam. It is a very beautiful city steeped in history. On our first evening in Hanoi, we visited a water puppet show, a fantastic theatrical art that originates from Northern Vietnam. Our next visit was Halong Bay. After travelling a distance of 250 km, we boarded a traditional wooden boat to view the scenic beauty of 1000 Islands and unique rock formations called Stone Dog, Incense Burner and Fighting Cock. The next day, we visited the Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son temple with a tiny tortoise pagoda. Later, we wandered around the old quarters and experienced the local culture, while our wives indulged in some shopping. Our next stop was Saigon, now known as Ho Chi Minh City, a vibrant metropolis where traditional and modern life converges. We visited the gorgeous Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon, the Museum of Vietnamese History and the Thien Hau Pagoda. We also visited the Cho Lon Market also known as Chinatown. Rotarians and their spouses had a field day bargaining and buying presents for their near and dear ones. We visited the Cu Chi Tunnels, an incredible underground network of tunnels used during the Vietnam War. Our last stop was Cambodia. We landed in Siam Reap and left for the city of Angkor Thom in the evening. We entered through the South Gate. The causeway was lined with pictorial representations of the ancient Indian story of Samudra Manthan. The causeway depicts the episode where angels and demons were churning the sea to extract the elixir of immortality from it. To all Rotarians, Our Chairman Anil Kejriwal had organised a trip to Vietnam and Cambodia from 21st February to 1st March, 2016. Five Rotarians Dr. Kirit Mody, Anil Kejriwal, Varsha Vadera, Gaurav Kapadia and I, along with our respective spouses had gone along with seven others. We reached Hanoi on 22nd February. It was very chilly. We visited many places of interest and even went for a boat ride. We then proceeded to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh city) for two days. Our wives did a lot of shopping. We were shown the tunnels in which the Viet Cong soldiers hid while fighting the war with the Americans. The last two days of our trip were spent in Cambodia. We had veteran tour guides during our trip, which added to the whole experience. We also stayed at excellent hotels during our fairly exhausting but enjoyable tour. We all bonded well and enjoyed each other's company. Our compliments and thanks are due to Anil and Bina Kejriwal and Gaurav and Poornima Kapadia for arranging our trip. They put in a lot of hard work. Dr. Arvind Kasbekar MARCH 2016 6 Mid-Town Bulletin March 2016.indd 6 3/22/2016 6:29:04 PM
