b GATHERING b PRELUDE: Bright and Glorious is the Sky (arr. Held) CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen Jesus, our guide and our truth, came not to abolish the law or the prophets, but to fulfill, and to call us to follow in his footsteps. Let us therefore confess before God, those ways we fail to let our lights shine before others. We confess S T. ANDREW S Lutheran Church 1416 Broad River Road, Columbia, SC 29210 Baptism of Our Lord January 7, 2018 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. The Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW) is the red worship book found in your pew racks. Service music, indicated with a page number, can be found in the front portion of the book. Hymns, indicated by number, are found in the back portion of the book. Congregational responses are printed in bold type. Silence for reflection and self-examination. that we come before you, flawed, and struggling. You have set before us life and prosperity and yet we often choose the ways of death and adversity. You call us to follow you, and yet we walk in our own directions. You command us to love you, and our neighbors and yet we often see those who are different than ourselves as somehow not members with us in the family of God. You call us to forgive and turn the other cheek, to give freely as you give, and yet we seek an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth and withhold that which you have called us to share. In your mercy, forgive us. Help us to love and obey you, and hold fast to you all the length of our days so that we may live as your baptized children of light. We remain kneeling as the pastor offers God s absolution and forgiveness. Following absolution we stand for the hymn, facing the processional cross as we begin.

GATHERING SONG: Crashing Waters at Creation (ELW Hymn 455) The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. KYRIE (ELW page 147) HYMN OF PRAISE (ELW page 148) PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Holy God, creator of light and giver of goodness, your voice moves over the waters. Immerse us in your grace, and transform us by your Spirit, that we may follow after your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. We sit b WORD b CHILDREN S SERMON (11:00 a.m.) FIRST READING: GENESIS 1:1-5 1In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, 2 the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. 3 Then God said, Let there be light ; and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM 29: The refrain will be sung first by the cantor, and by the congregation each time thereafter. The congregation is also invited to sing the verses printed in bold type. 1 Ascribe to the LORD, you gods, ascribe to the LORD glo- ry and strength. 2Ascribe to the LORD the glory due God's name; worship the LORD in the beau- ty of holiness. 3The voice of the LORD is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders; the LORD is upon the mighty waters. 4The voice of the LORD is a pow- erful voice; the voice of the LORD is a voice of splendor. REFRAIN 5The voice of the LORD breaks the cedar trees; the LORD breaks the ce- dars of Lebanon; 6 the LORD makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox. 7 The voice of the LORD bursts forth in lightning flashes. 8The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness; the LORD shakes the wilder- ness of Kadesh. REFRAIN 9The voice of the LORD makes the oak trees writhe and strips the forests bare. And in the temple of the LORD all are crying, "Glory!" 10The LORD sits enthroned a- bove the flood; the LORD sits enthroned as king for- evermore. 11 O LORD, give strength to your people; give them, O LORD, the bless- ings of peace. REFRAIN SECOND READING: ACTS 19:1-7 1While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior regions and came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples. 2 He said to them, Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers? They replied, No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit. 3 Then he said, Into what then were you baptized? They answered, Into John s baptism. 4 Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus. 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied 7 altogether there were about twelve of them. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. We stand.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: The refrain will be sung first by the cantor, and by the congregation each time thereafter. Cantor: The heavens were opened, God s voice was heard; This is my Son, listen to Him. (Refrain) The Holy Gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. GOSPEL: MARK 1:4-11 4John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6 Now John was clothed with camel s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 He proclaimed, The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8 I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. 9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11 And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. We sit. SERMON We stand and sing. HYMN OF THE DAY: Baptized and Set Free (ELW Hymn 453) NICENE CREED: Please turn to the back inside cover of your hymnal.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Each intercession will end with Lord in your mercy, to which we respond: Hear our prayer. b MEAL b PEACE The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. We greet one another with a gesture of peace using these or similar words: Peace be with you. We sit. This helps Facebook track the traffic on our page and helps us know how to better serve you! Tables of Grace In the Fall, we had 63 people participate in Tables of Grace. We are getting ready to launch another round and hope that even more people will take advantage of this fun way to get to know members of our church family. If you participated last time, we will assume you'd like to participate again, unless you tell us otherwise. If you did not sign up before, here's your chance. Please let Jay or Tracy Folk know you're interested, and you'll be assigned a group which will make plans to meet one time in January-March. There will be a sign up table in the Narthex beginning today or you can email Tracy Folk at tracy1961@gmail.com. The last day to sign up is Sunday, January 21.
