They join 34 other students from last week s NHD in Iowa Senior Division (grades 9-12) contest who will represent Iowa at the 2011 Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest June 12-16, 2011, at the University of Maryland. The contingent of 69 Iowa students will compete against nearly 2,500 students from the United States, Guam, America Samoa, Department of Defense Schools in Europe, and Shanghai, China, for scholarships and prizes. National History Day is an academic-enrichment program that helps students learn about historical issues, ideas, people and events. The year-long academic adventure fosters students enthusiasm for learning and encourages them to use primary, secondary, community and statewide resources on a subject of their choice related to an annual theme. The theme for 2011 is Debate & Diplomacy: Successes, Failures, Consequences. Working individually or collaboratively in groups of two to five, students compete in a variety of categories, including historical papers, individual and group exhibits, documentaries, performances and Web sites. Students in grades 9-12 compete in the senior division while students in grades 6-8 compete in the junior division. Students in grades 4-5 may participate in the non-competitive Iowa Youth Division. In addition to discovering the world of the past, the NHD program helps students develop the following attributes that are critical for future success: critical thinking and problem-solving skills research and reading skills oral and written communication and presentation skills self-esteem and confidence a sense of responsibility for and involvement in the democratic process

I already have a 2012 signup sheet started (July 11-15). I particularly want to thank the North Scott Rotary Club for filling in so many slots for me. Merle, you did a great job as point man. Periodicals postage paid at Eldridge, IA 52748 POSTMASTER: Send address changes to NorScottarian, PO Box 52, Eldridge, IA 52748 July 28, 2011 Meeting Notes: Annual Corn Boil John Maxwell and his hard working corn boil committee did a wonderful job of preparing and serving grilled chops, sweet corn, assorted salads, drinks & desserts for approximately 210 Rotarians and guests. The talented Golinghorst Scott County Pork Producer grilling team cooked the chops perfectly. John had a few tense moments trying to get all the corn cooked fast enough. The propane cookers decided to go on break and only put out minimal heat. This was remedied, and other methods of cooking were used to create fantastic tasting corn which was enjoyed by all. The sweet corn was donated by Golinghorst Farms, Inc. Rich and his son and son in law timed the growing perfectly ( with the help of the heat) to provide us with some of the best corn ever. Thanks Rich!! Fifty four North Scott Rotary members attended, along with Myron Scheibe from the Moline Rotary and Duncan Cameron from Bettendorf Rotary. Several Fair Board members also attended, along with former Rotarians Bob Fox, Bob Petersen and Jim Rastrelli. The 4 Way Test Of the things we THINK SAY or DO 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
