First United Methodist Church 103 W Main Street P.O. Box 72 www.newbernfumc.org Phone (731) 627-3386 Fax (731) 627-2261 D C M B R ` 2 0 1 7 Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ: There is a story of a minister who fell asleep in his study and dreamed of a world into which Jesus never came. In his dream, he saw himself walking through his house, but as he looked, he saw no stockings hung on the chimney, no Christmas tree, no wreaths of holly, and no Christ to comfort and gladden hearts or to save. He then walked onto the street but there was no church with its spire pointing toward heaven. And when he came back and sat down in his study, he realized that every book about Jesus had disappeared. The minister dreamed that the doorbell rang and that a messenger asked him to visit a friend s poor dying mother. He reached her home and as his friend sat and wept, he said, I have something here that will comfort you. He opened his Bible to look for a familiar promise, but it ended with Malachi. There was no gospel, no promise of hope and salvation, and all he could do was bow his head and weep with his friend and his mother in bitter despair. Two days later the minister conducted her funeral service, but there was no message of comfort, no words of a glorious resurrection, and no thought of a mansion awaiting her in heaven. There was only dust to dust, and ashes to ashes, and one long eternal farewell. Finally, the minister realized that Christ had not come, and he burst into tears, weeping bitterly in his sorrowful dream. Then suddenly he awoke with a start and a great shout of joy and praise burst from his lips as he heard in the distance a hymn being sung: O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant; O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem! Come and behold him, born the king of angels; o come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord! Let us be glad and rejoice this Christmas Season because Jesus has come. He has come and let us remember the proclamation of the angel: I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior is born; he is Christ the Lord. I wish for each of you an Advent Season filled with joy and great expectation. I hope this will be the merriest Christmas you have ever experienced! The UMW will meet this month on Monday, December 11 th @ 1:30pm at the home of Billy Thornton. The United Methodist Women have had a great year. As we close out this year we want to THANK everyone for the support you have given us throughout the year for our various projects. Merry Christmas to each of you and may your New Year be the best ever! A little humor ---------- In Sunday School, they were teaching how God created everything, including human beings. Little Johnny seemed especially intent when they told him how ve was created out of one of Adam's ribs. Later in the week, his mother noticed him lying down as though he were ill, and said, 'Johnny what is the matter? 'Little Johnny responded, 'I have a pain in my side. I think I'm going to have a wife.' Which Virgin? A ten-year old, who was becoming quite knowledgeable about the Bible because of her grandmother s teaching, asked her grandmother: Which Virgin was the mother of Jesus? The Virgin Mary or the King James Virgin? November 19 th was INVIT A FRIND SUNDAY at Newbern FUMC. A great worship service, followed by a wonderful catered meal was enjoyed by all.
