From Father Kirby I m in Louisville, KY, this Saturday leading the parish retreat of the Cathedral of the Assumption, but I m home for Sunday (October 7). And so, I ll miss seeing some of you this weekend, but wish everyone a blessed Sabbath! As we move through October and November, our Gospel Readings are drawn from the urgent teachings of the Lord on his way to Jerusalem. It is essential that we understand this context since it heightens the central place of the teachings that the Lord Jesus is giving to us as his disciples. Last week, the Lord spoke about purity of belief and the innocence of vulnerable people. Today he speaks about the indissolubility of marriage and the blessing of children. Christian disciples have always distinguished themselves by their commitment to marriage vows and their openness to children. Are we continuing this living tradition in our own lives? Do we understand the Lord s call today? As a follow up to our Parish Survey and the Town Hall meetings, I d like to let the community know about some developments: Homilies. There was an array of opinions about my homilies. Many indicated how much they enjoy the content and passion, while some others thought they are too intense or intimidating. Obviously, I take each opinion to heart and am discerning my homiletic style. While I have the temperament that God has given me and realize the urgent importance of the Gospel in the life of humanity (and seek to express that urgency and radical summons in the homilies at ), I am not above nor opposed to examining my preaching style. Please know that I am taking this to prayer and consulting with senior priests for their counsel and thoughts. This coming Friday, the pastoral staff is meeting to give a thorough review of the Parish Survey and so more updates are forthcoming as new resolutions and action items are discussed and made by leadership. This Saturday (October 13) is our parish Fall Day of Recollection with Gary Zimak. Our guest speaker will give talks based on the theme: From Fear to Faith. All are welcome. It s free. Please bring a friend! Please note that my Installation Ceremony as Pastor of Our Lady of Grace is on Tuesday, October 16. As a part of the celebration, David Vasquez of our parish is organizing a burse. Dave is collecting the burse in an effort to pay off my remaining academic debt (about $27,000). Anyone who might want to assist with this burse can contact Dave at dvasquez@carolina.rr.com. I am humbled by this effort and grateful for this sentiment. More updates next week. Let s pray for one another! Father Jeffrey Kirby Twitter/fatherkirby frkirby@gracewepray.org
