SEPTEMBER 30, 2018 The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul; the decree of the Lord is trustworthy, giving wisdom to the simple. The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the LORD are true, all of them just. Psalm 19 Dear Parishioners and Friends, In the mailing that was sent to all registered parishioners last week, we received a letter from Bishop Matano asking for support of this year s Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA). Along with a video that will be shared this weekend, we now begin the annual process of requesting funds to provide for the essential operating support of diocesan programs and support services to both St. Rita parish and thousands of people throughout the twelve counties that comprise our Diocese. A successful Catholic Ministries Appeal is vital to the continued health of our Diocesan mission and that of our local Church. As our parishes within the Diocese strive to work together for a common cause, we act as the Body of Christ. Together we can and we do make a difference. I am asking that every family in our parish please join me in support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Your support of this appeal ensures that our schools, faith formation, and sacramental programs remain vital sources of learning and support for the young people who will one day lead our Church. It ensures that the needs of the sick, the troubled and elderly are met by the various offices of Catholic Charities. It ensures essential training for all those who are called to ministry within our Diocese and gives support to our seminarians who will become, by God's grace, good and holy future priests. Our combined support ensures that our church remains a vital, faith driven community. If you did not receive a mailing from the Diocese, information and donation envelopes are available in the back of Church. You can also go on-line to www.dor.org where you can make your gift by credit card if you like. There is a link to the moving CMA video which you can also view online. Please be sure to indicate St. Rita Church #327 as your church. Thank you all for what you ve done to help make St. Rita Parish a vibrant faith community. You are most appreciated! May God bless you! For information about the day please call the school office at 671-3132. ST. RITA SCHOOL Spirit of Learning Corner Here's What's Happening... + Ask any student from St. Rita School s Third through Fifth Grade classes to identify the seven continents on a blank map and you will find that each student can do this. Our older students are also able to identify the oceans, seas, deserts, and mountain ranges. St. Rita School runs a program called Passport Club for all students in 3rd - 5th grades. On the last Wednesday of each month, students must identify the assigned countries or landmarks on a blank map. Mrs. Sutley, our Fourth and Fifth Grades Social Studies teacher, has run this program for several years. Many alumni find they have an advantage when they enter Middle School due to their mapping skills from Passport. + We want your Box Tops! You may not even notice them on many everyday products, but St. Rita School was able to raise hundreds of dollars from our Box Tops for Education collection. Box Tops cut outs can be dropped off at school or, even more convenient for parishioners, there is a collection box in the greeting area in church. Clip them for St. Rita School! + Saturday, September 29 th was a day of food, fundraising, and fun for St. Rita School students, families, faculty and staff. The morning started off with our 32 nd Annual Marathon. Students and families walked laps around North Ponds Park to raise money for their school. These hard-working God-drops were rewarded with hotdogs, hot chocolate, and ice-cream. Later that evening many families took advantage of the Sticky Lips BBQ Fundraiser that was held from 4:00-7:00 in the Sr. Katherine Ann Circle. This first time drivethrough fundraiser was a big success! Thank you for continuing to support St. Rita School throughout the years! Why do You Love SRS? "I love St. Rita because of its friendly, welcoming atmosphere. It is a place where we all genuinely care about one another. We are a family!" HOPE Ministry would like to express gratitude to everyone who participated in our annual garage sale. It was a week filled with fellowship, fun and hard work. This year we had 334 volunteers sign in plus the help of the Thomas football teams and Thomas soccer teams. We prayed together every morning, ate lunch together for 6 days, and priced items that we marveled over. Who knew there were can openers shaped like fish to open tuna cans? There is deep satisfaction from working together as a community. The money we raised will go to help low income people in Webster throughout the year. If you donated items, helped to set up and sell or shopped our event we are most grateful. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * FOOD COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND On the first Sunday of each month, parishioners are asked to bring in nonperishable food for the needy in our area. From the Desk of Marie Marton... FEAST OF THE GUARDIAN ANGELS This Tuesday, October 2 nd, is the feast of the Guardian Angels. This is a feast which I believe we are all familiar. One of the best known of the Guardian Angels is St. Michael the Archangel. I am sure we are all familiar with the prayer to St. Michael: Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host by the Divine Power of God cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits, who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. Angels are very powerful beings that were created specifically for the purpose of guarding and watching over us. St Michael is recognized as the most powerful and strong of all the Archangels. One time, some years ago, I remember listening to a lecture in which the topic and faith of Russia was raised. Mikhail Gorbachev was asked about what it must have been like to grow up in a country in which God was forbidden to exist. His response always impressed me. Gorbachev responded that, while the authorities might have not allowed God in Russia, they never made any such proclamation with respect to angels. That was why he and so many other boys were given the name of Michael (Mikhail) by their Russian parents. The parents, including his own, still sought heavenly protection and prayer by naming their sons with the name of St. Michael the Archangel. These powerful beings were created by God because of His great love for us. They were created before man/woman and for the express purpose of serving and protecting us. They are always praying for us as they gently nudge us on in our faith of God. As Catholics, we believe that we each have our own, individual Guardian Angel. I don t know about you, but I imagine that my own personal Guardian Angel has reason to shake his/her head in wonderment and confusion. Since I appreciate the consternation of this pure spirit, I plan to say the following prayer to console this poor being and assure him/her that I do appreciate this Angel s constancy and support. My Angel is sure to look something like this: Yours too? Well, maybe you would be willing to join me in this prayer this Tuesday (or any day, for that matter) in honor of your own Guardian Angel. Angel of God, my guardian dear, To whom God s love commits me here; Ever this day be at my side, To light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.
