OUR LADY OF FATIMA Happy Mother s Day to all mothers, grandmothers, spiritual mothers, adoptive mothers, and any woman who serves in a mother role! And let s not forget to say Happy Mother s Day to our Blessed Mother! On May 13, 2017, the Church celebrates the 100 th Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima. To honor Our Lady and the Fatima apparitions in a special way, Pope Francis has declared a Jubilee Year from November 27, 2016 until November 26, 2017, during which souls can gain a plenary indulgence. *In 1917, Our Lady appeared to three young shepherd children, Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta, in the small town of Fatima, Portugal. She first appeared on May 13, 1917, and asked them to come back on the 13 th of each month for the next five months. Her main request of them at each apparition was to pray the rosary every day for peace and the conversion of sinners. On July 13 th, she even showed the young children a vision of hell, which incited them to seriously heed her call for prayer and sacrifice for sinners. The young children suffered a lot and were even threatened by authorities and taken to prison for a short time. But on October 13 th, Our Lady fulfilled her promise of a miracle so that all would believe, which is called the Miracle of the Sun, when the sun danced and spun around in the sky and then seemed to plummet to earth, completely drying the land after days of torrential rain. 70,000 people witnessed it, and even the newspapers reported on the miracle with actual pictures. Our Lady also revealed Herself that day as Our Lady of the Rosary and showed visions of Our Lord and the Sorrowful Mother, St. Joseph and the Child Jesus blessing the world, and Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Pope Francis will be canonizing Blessed Francisco and Jacinta on May 13, 2017 in Fatima. How can you live the Message of Fatima? Here s a simple way: *Pray the Rosary every day Our Lady asked us to! *Pray daily for the salvation of souls, especially the souls entrusted to you. *Offer sacrifices for sinners. The best sacrifice is obedience to your daily duties according to your state in life. *Practice the First Devotion In 1925, Our Lord asked Sr. Lucia to establish devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Shortly after, the First Devotion was revealed by Our Lady as the way to do that: On five consecutive First s, go to Confession, receive Communion, recite 5 decades of the rosary, and meditate on the mysteries of the rosary, all with the intention of consoling the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Save the date! St. Francis Xavier Cathedral will be hosting the Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima from June 2-4, 2017, with a Welcome Mass on June 2 nd at 5PM with Bishop Ricken. More details to come. Mark your calendar! *Jubilee Year of Fatima - Granting of Plenary Indulgence In order to celebrate with dignity the centennial of the Apparitions of Fatima, by mandate of Pope Francis, a Jubilee Year is granted, with the inherent plenary indulgence, from the 27th of November 2016 till the 26th of November 2017. The plenary indulgence of the jubilee is granted: a) To the faithful who visit the Sanctuary of Fatima on pilgrimage and devotedly participate in some celebration or prayer in honor of the Virgin Mary, pray the Our Father, recite the symbol of the faith (Creed) and invoke Our Lady of Fatima; b) To the pious faithful who visit with devotion an image of Our Lady of Fatima, solemnly displayed to public veneration in any temple, oratory or adequate place, on the anniversary days of the apparitions (the 13th of each month, from May to October 2017), and who devotedly participate there in some celebration or prayer in honor of the Virgin Mary, pray the Our Father, recite the symbol of the faith (Creed) and invoke Our Lady of Fatima; c) To the faithful who, due to their age, illness or another serious cause, are hindered of moving, if repented of all their sins and with the firm intention to carry out, as soon as it will be possible to them, the three conditions indicated below, in front of a small image of Our Lady of Fatima, on the days of the apparitions, joining spiritually the jubilee celebrations, offering with confidence to the merciful God through Mary their prayers and pains, or the sacrifices of their own life. In order to obtain plenary indulgences, the faithful who are truly repentant and filled with charity must fulfill the following ritual conditions: sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father. Note: This is the English translation, made by the WAF International Secretariat, of the text in Portuguese released by the Sanctuary of Fatima about the Plenary Indulgence to be granted during the Fatima Jubilee Year, in 2017.Source: https://wafusa.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/plenary-indulgence-centennial-fatima-apparitions-2017.pdf ~Sacristan & Liturgist, Margaret Kleinschmidt HOLY BAPTISM Congratulations to Gwendalin Marie & Jacqueline Charlotte Daughters of Alginn Bohannon & Tammy Stepanovich who were baptized here at Cathedral on, May 7th.
