Cathedral of St. John the Baptist 4 December 2016 Feast of the Immaculate Conception Holy Day of Obligation 8 December 2016 Mass schedule is as follows: 9:00 AM at St. Mary of the Annunciation 12:05 PM at the Cathedral 6:00 PM at the Cathedral The Parish Office will be closed on Thursday, 8 December and will reopen on Friday, 9 December. Mark your Calendar! Advent Adoration Wednesdays in Advent, beginning this Wednesday, 7 December, there will be Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from 12:30 PM- 7:00 PM. A Holy Hour with confessions will begin at 6:00 PM and there will be a night prayer and Benediction at 6:45 PM. A sign-up board for the incredible task of sitting with our Lord is located in the back of the church. Remember that Advent is an important time of preparation for the coming of our Lord so make a family Holy Hour and be sure to schedule some quiet time for reflection! Cathedral Calendars Beautiful 2017 Calendars are available for parishioners to pick up after Mass in the lower Cathedral or St. Mary's Parish Hall. They are courtesy of parishioner James A. McAlister. Blessing of the Christ Child: 11 December Next Sunday, Gaudete Sunday, bring your baby Jesus from your nativity set and place it on the table on the Blessed Virgin Mary altar side to the blessed at the 9:00 AM Mass. Missa Super Dixit Maria Choral Mass Hans Leo Hassler Today, 4 December 2016 11:15 AM Hassler is considered to be one of the two finest German composers of the Renaissance, and he is often compared to Lassso in terms of cosmopolitanism and overall quality of repertoire. Hassler is also compared to Palestrtina in composing melodic lines that are fluid in shape, and in constructing balanced formal structures with textures that unfold in logically satisfying harmonic designs. The Missa Dixit Maria, based on Hassler s own motet, is his most well known. It is a relatively brief work, with a texture of alternating imitative polyphony and homophony, and with scoring for SATB voices except the Crucifixus (SA), Et ressurexit (SAT), and et iterum ventures est cum Gloria (TB). In addition, the text is set syllabically, with very few repetitions in the Gloria and Credo movements. Christmas Flower Donations Help make the church beautiful for the Christmas season by donating flowers in memory or in honor of loved ones. Names will be printed in the Christmas bulletin. Use your envelope provided or a blank envelope with your name and the names of those you wish to honor. Deadline for submission is Monday, December 19. You can place envelopes in the collection or bring them to the Parish Office at 119 Broad Street.

www.charlestoncathedral.com 4 December 2016 Christmas Giving Tree In the back of the Cathedral is our Giving Tree. Please take an ornament or two and purchase a gift for a child who may have a very sparse Christmas without you. The age and sex of the child is noted on the back of the ornament. Please return with a gift unwrapped and with the ornament attached to make sorting easier. We have been asked not to purchase toy weapons. Also if you are considering purchasing a doll as a gift, please keep in mind that many are minority children. Gifts are donated to the Neighborhood House for distribution. As much as we appreciate expensive gifts, we encourage those who are able to purchase more gifts rather than very expensive gifts. In this way, we can reach more children and there will not be a great disparity between what each child receives. Please return unwrapped gifts with the ornament attached by 12 December. Gifts should be placed around the giving tree. St. Vincent de Paul News The St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry requests the following items: Grape jelly Pancake mix and syrup Small bags of rice Boxes or small cups of macaroni and cheese Assorted cans of vegetables (not beans or corn) Spaghetti noodles (white, not wheat) Spam Vienna sausages Beef soups Diced pear cups Cans of chili and stew Thank you for your generosity! Thornhill Carolyn Torlay Haley Tyrrell Patricia Van Marter William Viger Peter Winkler Nicholas Yeaw Kathi Zigli What is a Holy Day of Obligation? The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains Holy Days of Obligation this way: On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are to refrain from engaging in work or activities that hinder the worship owed to God, the joy proper to the Lord's Day, the performance of the works of mercy, and the appropriate relaxation of mind and body. Family needs or important social service can legitimately excuse from the obligation of Sunday rest. The faithful should see to it that legitimate excuses do not lead to habits prejudicial to religion, family life, and health [CCC 2185]. Remember that 8 December, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, is a Holy Day of Obligation. Attendance at Mass on this date is as important as attending Mass on Sundays! We welcome all visitors to the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Docents are available for a tour of our Cathedral following the 9:00 and 11:15 AM Masses. If you are interested in a tour, please wait next to the Pulpit after Mass. You may make at donation by text at (843) 580-1719.
