September 2017 Northfield Presbyterian Church The Good News Notes From Session I m reminded of this story every time we have an event here at NPC and we re never sure it s going to come together and there will be enough.. Stone Soup everyone gathered. The villagers are delighted at how delicious the soup tastes who would have guessed that soup made from stones could come out so good? This story s roots trace back to 1732, my favorite version was the Marcia Brown semi-animated book featured on Captain Kangaroo YEARS ago. Still one of my favorites and lives in my library. In a medieval village, a farmer notices three starving soldiers approaching town and warns his neighbors to hide their food, for fear of losing all of it. The soldiers go door to door, denied food by everyone they ask. Suddenly, one of the soldiers gets an idea. He knocks on a door, asking the villager if he and his friends could use her cauldron and firewood to make stone soup. The idea of soup made from stones is so strange and interesting that she lets the men into her home. One of the soldiers fetches some water from a well, along with some regular stones. As the water begins to boil around the rocks, news spreads throughout the town that the soldiers they saw earlier were making soup made from stones. A group of intrigued villagers arrives at the woman's home to watch the soup bubble. After some time passes, an impatient onlooker asks the soldiers if he can help. Some potatoes might actually add some flavor, a soldier suggests, and the villager goes to retrieve some potatoes. Not wanting to be left out, another villager asks if she can add something. A couple of carrots could work, a soldier says. This continues, and soon the soup also contains poultry, barley, garlic, and leeks. One of the soldiers finally announces that the soup is done and shares the soup with That is the reason stone soup is so delicious. Each person knows that he or she contributed in a meaningful way to make the soup. Each person can rightly claim that this soup is more hearty and delicious because of that contribution. In the fable, a poor and hungry town enjoyed a wonderful feast. By working together they made the best soup ever. By working together, with everyone contributing what they can, a greater good is achieved. In our church, we are all important ingredients of the soup and in order for our church to be successful, we all need to work together and add our talents and ideas to the soup. Just as soup warms us when we re cold, our church family warms our hearts and puts a smile on our face. 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 (ERV) 4 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but they are all from the same Spirit. 5 There are different ways to serve, but we serve the same Lord. 6 And there are different ways that God works in people, but it is the same God who works in all of us to do everything. A dedicated rotating group of teachers will be ministering to them. Contact Michelle Williamson if you would consider working with this group. Adult Sunday School will return Sunday September 10th at 9:00 a.m. in Room 201. Keith Miller will be leading. Study to be determined. Junior and Senior High Students will begin a Confirmation Class Series on Sunday October 1st from 5-7 p.m. her e at the chur ch. Chr is and Patty Fenn will be leading this class. Please let them or the office know if your youth will be attending. Please be in prayer for all these efforts as the new education season begins.
Women s Association Welcome to HEAVEN, Women! The Northfield Presbyterian Church Women s Association will resume monthly meetings on September 11 at 10am in the Family Living Area of the church. All women are most cordially invited to join together in discussion and fellowship as the Women s Association begins a Bible study from the booklet HEAVEN written by Douglas Connelly. The first study entitled Preparing a Place from John 14:1-9 will be lead by Fran Merriam. Study booklets will be provided at no cost for all women attending the meeting. Please join us for lively and thought provoking idea sharing where every input is valued. There are no right or wrong answers! A brief business meeting will follow the Bible Study. PANTRY ITEMS CONTINUE TO BE COLLECTED The Women s Association will continue to collect food items for the Macedonia Emergency Center. They need dry, boxed nonperishable food items such as: Spaghetti noodles and all other types of pasta either in a box or bags as well as rice, instant potatoes, cereal, hamburger or tuna helper, etc. There is a container in the narthex where church families can drop off their donations on Sundays or any other day they are in the building. Anti-Trafficking Update It s September now and 12 P.M. in our day and time for lunch. Will our lives be unknowingly touched by human trafficking at our midday meal? Well, if you are eating fish, it may have been caught by men in Southeast Asia who came aboard a fishing boat with the promise of a good life only to find that they are a captives on the vessel and are exposed to many hardships. In West Africa, some children as young as four years of age are subjected to conditions of forced labor in the fishing industry. These victims may have been deprived of wages, food, water and shelter. They may work extremely long hours and suffer physical and sexual abuse. Let s hope that a peanut butter and jelly sandwich hasn t been touch by human trafficking, but who knows? For October, it will be time for an afternoon snack at 2 P.M. RAHAB HOUSE WOMENS SHELTER SEEKING ITEMS: Deodorant, Body Wash, Toothpaste, Lotion, Shampoo, Conditioner (Full size please). There will be a bin in the lobby to put items until September 10th. Thank You. Tuesday Night Bible Study: Genesis You re invited to join this interdenominational study of Genesis, beginning September 5th at 7:00 pm in room 201. The study books have homework questions that are discussed the night of the study. The leader, Keith Miller, will provide additional insights and historical background. Material cost is $17.00 for the booklet. This 30 week study will meet every Tuesday with breaks for holidays and a week in the spring. Come enjoy the fellowship and enlightening conversation. Contact Keith or Ellen Miller with any questions. Open to all! Day Care Turns 40! The Day Care is celebrating 40 years as a business and ministry this month. They opened in 1977 to fill a need in the Nordonia Hills area for child care both in the Child Welfare department and private pay individuals. What began as a Trial period has grown into 40 years of ministry to the community. They are now a 2-Star Step Up to Quality organization. We will be celebrating with a cake and a Moment for Mission during the service from Director Sherry Pomeroy on September 17th. Check out the bulletin board in the stairwell for pictures and memories! **Sherry also thanks the folks who took the time to go buy ice cream at Rosati s last month. A total of $74.00 was raised toward playground projects.
