بسم هللا الرحمن الرحيم أذكركم ( you Ramadan Special: Remember Me, I will remember Day 5 (العفو) Allah Al Afuw (فاذكروني Introduction When you know the names of Allah (swt) then you increase in faith, and increasing in faith is to feel the unseen. You feel Allah (swt) is watching you, you feel He s hearing you, you feel He knows about you. We want to reach the level of ihsan, to worship Him as if you see Him. We can t see Him but we want to feel everything. Knowing Allah At Tawwab increases the feelings that you can t run to anyone except Allah At Tawwab. We need to constantly repent and return to Allah (swt). If you don t feel At Tawwab, then you won t feel you need to repent, subhan Allah. When you know Allah Al Ghafoor then you feel you want your sins to be concealed and to be covered in order to reform. Allah (swt) is beautifying us by giving us skin and keeping what s inside our heart inside, but without taqwa we re exposing ourselves. Imagine if we didn t have skin or clothes to cover us? Subhan Allah. (العفو) Allah Al Afuw When you think of the name of Allah Al Afuw you remember laylat al Qadr. May Allah (swt) grant us this night. Ameen. It s in the last ten nights of Ramadan. Aisha a (ra) asked what is the best dua a to وعنها قالت: قلت: يا رسول هللا أرأيت إن علمت أي ليلة القدر ما أقول فيها قال: "قولي: ( Hadith: make on this night? ('Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: I asked: "O ("اللهم إنك عفو تحب العفو فاعف عني Messenger of Allah! If I realize Lailat-ul-Qadr (Night of Decree), what should I supplicate in it?" He replied, "You should supplicate: Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun, tuhibbul-'afwa, fa'fu 'anni (O (ﷺ) Allah, You are Most Pardoning, and You love to pardon; so pardon me).") Riyadh As Saliheen, At Tirmidhi Book 9, Hadith 1195 On that night all of the decrees for the year, for everyone, will come from the Preserved Tablet to the hands of the angels. So many angels and Jibreel (as) come down on that night. If you worship Allah (swt) on that night then it s more than a thousand months, almost 83 years. The best dua a for that night is: ( إنك عفو تحب العفو فاعف عني (اللهم (Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun, tuhibbul-'afwa, fa'fu 'anni (O Allah, You are Most Pardoning, and You love to pardon; so pardon me) You can use the name Al Afuw anytime but to use it especially on laylat al Qadr means there is something about it, subhan Allah. On laylut al Qadr, it s like you re in prison and you re asking Allah Al Afuw to free you and release you though you re doing good deeds that day but you re not relying on your deeds, you re relying on Allah (swt). For example in life there are people in prison who get released if they re good. (المعنى اللغوي ( language Meaning in the It s in the exaggerated form ( مبالغة صيغة ). And it has no derivates from it. It s meanings in the language: Page 1

بسم هللا الرحمن الرحيم o To erase.(المحو) Something is written and it s totally removed and deleted with no traces..(طمس) Another meaning is to erase the features, effacement o It also means (التجاوز) which is to pass over. (الكثرة و الزيادة ( increase o Abundance and (سهل قصده وتناوله ( get o Easy to approach and (المعنى الشرعي ( deen Meaning in the (كثير الصفح) Much in overlooking the sins Allah Al Afuw overlooks the sins of His slaves abundantly, without an end ( الصفح.(كثير Imagine you have a 1000 sins a day, Allah (swt) is overlooking much of it, some are covered so you reform yourself, and a few are revealed to you so you repent. For example you have a new maid who doesn t know anything. She made a 100 mistakes, 80 you overlook, 19 you keep on-hold and one thing you tell her. You don t tell her all 20 at one time because she can be overwhelmed. And to Allah (swt) is the best example, imagine how He s dealing with us. Unlike ourselves who are always looking at other s mistakes though Allah (swt) has power over us, subhan Allah. When you know how Allah (swt) is dealing with you then it teaches you how you should deal with others. To overlook means He erases the sin and its features which means He will not mention on the Day of Judgement that you committed this sin, subhan Allah. When we commit sins the angels are writing them. Imagine your 1000 sins for the day are written because it s the angels job, but Allah Al Afuw will erase much from their books and make them forget it, though they saw you, subhan Allah. Allah (swt) will also erase it from the people s minds even if they saw you. Surah Ar Ra ad 39: ( ي م حوا ٱ لل م ا ي ش ا ء و يثب ت و ع ند ه ۥ أم ٱلڪ ت ب ) (Allâh blots out what He wills and confirms (what He wills). And with Him is the Mother of the Book (Al-Lauh Al-Mahfûdh).) Allah (swt) knows which of your sins are to be overlook and two people can commit the same sin, (ﷺ) but for one it s overlooked and not for the other, subhan Allah. For example the Prophet frowned when a Companion came to him while he was in the middle of talking to Quraish. Though the Companion is blind and wasn t affected, Allah (swt) immediately revealed ayat abasa. It s not acceptable for a messenger, but look at how many times we frown a day. The higher your faith, the more is expected from you. Allah (swt) knows which sin is to be overlooked depending on the person. He overlooks the sin as He wills, meaning by His knowledge and wisdom. Everything will be in line with what is in the Preserved Tablet. (كثير الخير) Much in goodness Allah Al Afuw is much in goodness ( الخير كثير ). Allah (swt) is bringing goodness to you day and night. So one meaning is regarding the sins and another meaning is regarding the provision. Allah (swt) is Al Afuw even before the creation, He is always Al Afuw and always will be. Page 2

بسم هللا الرحمن الرحيم (سهل) Easy to approach and get what He has It is easy to get Allah s pleasure and His love, subhan Allah. Imagine in this life, it s not easy to approach people around you or to get their love or pleasure. To please people is difficult, why? Because Allah (swt) doesn t want it to be our concern because it s not in our hands anyways. If you want the love or pleasure of someone, ask Allah (swt). Sometimes women complain about their husbands and say whatever he wants me to do, I do it, and still he s not looking at me. What s the problem? You, why are you running after his pleasure? This is the duniya, if you run behind anything then you will not get it and you ll be panting in the end. It s easy to approach Allah (swt), there s no appointment or waiting-list, etc. Allah (swt) will listen to you and you easily get His pleasure? How? When you eat food and say alhamdulliah then He s عن أنس رضي هللا عنه قال: قال رسول هللا صلى هللا عليه وسلم: هللا ليرضى عن العبد أن ( Hadith: pleased with you. reported: (Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) (يأكل األكلة فيحمده عليها أو يشرب الشربة فيحمده عليها " Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Allah will be pleased with His slave who praises Him (i.e., says Alhamdu lillah) when he eats and praises Him when he drinks".) Riyadh As Saliheen, Muslim, Book 1, Hadith 140 It s easy to get a house in paradise, recite Surah Al Ikhlas ten times. Hadith: The Prophet (Whoever recites Surah Al (م ن قرأ " قل ه و هللا أ ح د " حتى ي خت م ها عش ر مرات ب ن ى هللا له ق صر ا في الجن ة ( said (ﷺ) Ikhlas ten times, a palace will be built for him in paradise) As Silsilah As Saheeha 589, Authenticated by Al Albani as Hasan To get His forgiveness and pardoning is easy, but why do we see it as difficult? Because it s not tangible. Imagine if you are told you will get a check for a million dollars every time you wake-up for fajr, what will happen? You will wake-up. The more you want to be closer to someone, the more you repel them and the further they go, why? Because you need to turn to Allah (swt), not the people. Go vertically, not horizontally. Allah (swt) guides to good deeds even if the person has sins We all sin, but still we re praying and doing good deeds, so don t be deceived by yourself. Allah (swt) is dealing with you with Al Afuw to still guide you to good deeds though you have sins, subhan Allah. What is the purpose for afuw/for being pardoned? You commit many sins but Allah (swt) overlooks so you repent to Him and He overlooks your sins in order to do good deeds. We need repentance and good deeds and Allah Al Afuw helps you with these two matters so we benefit from it. Imagine if you have old and young children and they re all misbehaving, sometimes you ll overlook the younger ones but not the older ones. If you re in a bad mood, then all of them are in trouble. If you re tired, then you just let it go so there s no principle, but with taqwa it gives you balance, subhan Allah. The way of Allah (swt) is one, no one can influence Him because He s As Samad, and this gives you so much security when you know it doesn t change. Allah (swt) knows whom to pardon and what to pardon because everyone is different. He knows what s best for us. نإ" Page 3

بسم هللا الرحمن الرحيم We all have faults but when you know the names of Allah (swt) then it removes these faults and then you get taqwa. For example, you re jealous but when you know Allah is Ar Razaq, then you ask Him for provision, and this gives you taqwa. (أنواع العفو ( afuw Types of al General afuw العام) :(العفو this is for everyone and its purpose is for the duniya so everyone can this life. That s why He pardons all, but there is still an account and recompense in the akhira. Even disbelievers are pardoned, how? Their association with Allah (swt) is enough to deprive them of blessings, but Allah Al Afuw will overlook only in the duniya, but not the akhira because there will be hisab and recompense. He pardons them to live this life. So when you see disbelievers having better opportunities, etc instead of judging them know Allah (swt) is dealing with them with His afuw, but there is hisab in the akhira. Special afuw الخاص) :(العفو this is for the believers and for the akhira, He pardons you so you go to paradise. When you know Allah Al Afuw, then you will ask Him more by His name Al Afuw so you get more afuw. Whom does Allah (swt) overlook 100%? The mutawkileen who enter paradise with no account or torment. They trust Allah (swt) for everything. May Allah (swt) make us among them. Ameen. Name of Allah Al Afuw (العفو) in the Quran The name of Allah Al Afuw (العفو) is mentioned 5 times in the Quran, and 3 of them in Surah An Nisa a, one in Surah Al Hajj, and one in Surah Al Mujadila. The theme of Surah An Nisa a is to be just to the weak in society. Anyone above can oppress someone below. O) you who believe! Approach not As Salât (the prayer) when you are (ب وجوه كم و أ ي د يك م إ ن ٱ لل ك ا ن ع ف و ا غ فور ا in a drunken state until you know (the meaning) of what you utter, nor when you are in a state of Janâba, (i.e. in a state of sexual impurity and have not yet taken a bath) except when travelling on the road (without enough water, or just passing through a mosque), till you wash your whole body. And if you are ill, or on a journey, or one of you comes after answering the call of nature, or you have been in contact with women (by sexual relations) and you find no water, perform Tayammum with clean earth and rub therewith your faces and hands (Tayammum). Truly, Allâh is Ever Oft Pardoning, Oft Forgiving) This is called ayat al tayamum, you want to purify yourself but you don t have water and you need to pray. Tayamum can be done with sand, dust, and you don t wash your mouth or nose, just your hands and face. Imagine from wudhu with different parts of the body to tayamum with only the face and hands this is easier. The ayah about drinking is abrogated but it was abrogated in stages. When you pray, you need to know what you re saying so don t drink before you pray. Someone who s drunk doesn t know what he s saying. Imagine without drinking and you don t know what you saying or reading, istaghfar Allah. May Allah (swt) give us khushu. Ameen. Page 4

بسم هللا الرحمن الرحيم Don t come to the prayer while in junub. If you re sick or you re travelling or you answer the call of nature or have a relation, and there s no water, so how can you pray? Do tayamum and this is sufficient for wudhu and ghusl. Allah (swt) made it very easy to pray. From Allah s afuw, He overlooks if you can t use water, and He made it easy that you can do tayamum. And He s Ghafoor because He conceals the sin. Allah (swt) wants the ease for the people. (Verily! As for those whom the angels take ) ي ہ ت دون س ب يل )٧٩( ف أول ٮ ك ع س ى ٱ لل أ ن ي ع ف و ع ن ہم و ك ان ٱ لل ع ف و ا غ فور ا )٧٧ ) (in death) while they are wronging themselves (as they stayed among the disbelievers even though emigration was obligatory for them), they (angels) say (to them): "In what (condition) were you?" They reply: "We were weak and oppressed on earth." They (angels) say: "Was not the earth of Allâh spacious enough for you to emigrate therein?" Such men will find their abode in Hell - What an evil destination! (97) Except the weak ones among men, women and children who cannot devise a plan, nor are they able to direct their way. (98) These are they whom Allâh is likely to forgive them, and Allâh is Ever Oft- Pardoning, Oft-Forgiving. (99)) At the time of death, angels will take the souls of those who wronged themselves. How can someone wrong himself? By shirk, bida a, sin, disobedience, not doing the obligations. The angels said what made you wrong yourself? What excuse did they give? We were weak, we are the minority in a land of kufr. Then the angels will say, isn t the land of Allah (swt) vast so you can go? If you can t worship Allah (swt) in peace, then you need to go to a place where you can worship Allah (swt) in peace. Hijra is not only from a disbelieving land to believing land, but hijra is also going from a bad companion who doesn t pray for example and you go to another who does. Allah (swt) will make it easy when your intention is truthful. People say I need a visa and job but Allah (swt) will make it easy. There are people who are genuinely weak such as old men, those who are disabled, women who can t leave their husbands, and children. For them, may Allah (swt) pardon them and overlook this mistake. Allah (swt) pardons the one with a valid reason, but the ones without then they are not pardoned and the angels will scold them. This is an obligation to do hijra, just like hajj, but there are some who are pardoned from hajj, like whom? The one who doesn t have a male guarding, disabled, sick, and can t afford. A person cannot say, I cannot wear the hijab so Allah is Afuw. Al Ghafoor is to cover the sins. There are sins where you are doing something haram and there are sins for not doing the obligations. Al Afuw is for the obligations which you didn t do because it s the right of Allah (swt) but you have a valid excuse. And Al Ghafoor is for the sins. They did two sins, one for not doing hijra and the other is when you don t do the hijra then you fall into other sins there. If Allah (swt) is not dealing with us with Al Afuw Al Ghafoor then no one would remain on the earth. ل يح ب ٱ لل ٱل ج ه ر ب ٱلسو ء م ن ٱل ق و ل إ ل م ن ظل م و ك ان ٱ لل س م يع ا ع ل يم ا )٨٤٩( إ ن تب دوا خ ي ر ا أ و تخفوه ( :148-149 Surah An Nisa a ك ا ن ع ف و ا ق د ير ا )٨٤٧ ) (Allâh does not like that the evil should be uttered in public ) أ و ت ع فوا ع ن سو ء ف إ ن ٱ لل except by him who has been wronged. And Allâh is Ever All Hearer, All Knower. (148) Whether you Page 5

بسم هللا الرحمن الرحيم (mankind) disclose (by good words of thanks) a good deed (done to you in the form of a favour by someone), or conceal it, or pardon an evil, verily, Allâh is Ever Oft-Pardoning, All-Powerful. (149)) Allah (swt) hates someone to talk negatively orcriticizing in public. Allah (swt) doesn t like evil to be spread in public as if it s something normal and now it s all over the phones, subhan Allah. Allah (swt) said the only time a person is allowed to speak if he s wronged is to tell an authority. For example in school, one child beats another child. Based on this ayah, the child shouldn t tell the other students but go to the teacher. If someone does bad to you then overlook the mistake and Allah is Afuw Qadeer. You re not qadeer, so why don t you pardon? Allah (swt) pardons and He is Qadeer as well, He has so much power. (Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun, tuhibbul-'afwa, fa'fu 'anni (O Allah, You (اللهم إنك عفو تحب العفو فاعف عني ( are Most Pardoning, and You love to pardon; so pardon me) Page 6
