PROVERBS PROJECT: ACCEPTING CORRECTION & FEAR OF THE LORD Proverbs 1:7 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. Proverbs 1:23-33 [WISDOM PERSONIFIED SPEAKING] 23 If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you. 24 But since you rejected me when I called and no one gave heed when I stretched out my hand, 25 since you ignored all my advice and would not accept my rebuke, 26 I in turn will laugh at your disaster; I will mock when calamity overtakes you-- 27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you. 28 "Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me. 29 Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD, 30 since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, 31 they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes. 32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; 33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm." Proverbs 2:1-5 1 My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, 2 turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, 3 and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, 4 and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, 5 then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. Proverbs 3:5-8 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. 1

7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil. 8 This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. Proverbs 3:11-12 11 My son, do not despise the LORD's discipline and do not resent his rebuke, 12 because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in. Proverbs 5:11-14 [CONSEQUENCES OF CONSORTING WITH THE ADULTERESS] 11 At the end of your life you will groan, when your flesh and body are spent. 12 You will say, "How I hated discipline! How my heart spurned correction! 13 I would not obey my teachers or listen to my instructors. 14 I have come to the brink of utter ruin in the midst of the whole assembly." Proverbs 5:22-23 22 The evil deeds of a wicked man ensnare him; the cords of his sin hold him fast. 23 He will die for lack of discipline, led astray by his own great folly. Proverbs 6:23-24 23 For these commands are a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the corrections of discipline are the way to life, 24 keeping you from the immoral woman, from the smooth tongue of the wayward wife. Proverbs 8:12-13 12 "I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence; I possess knowledge and discretion. 13 To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech. Proverbs 9:1-6 1 Wisdom has built her house; she has hewn out its seven pillars. 2 She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine; she has also set her table. 2

3 She has sent out her maids, and she calls from the highest point of the city. 4 "Let all who are simple come in here!" she says to those who lack judgment. 5 "Come, eat my food and drink the wine I have mixed. 6 Leave your simple ways and you will live; walk in the way of understanding. Proverbs 9:7-11 7 "Whoever corrects a mocker invites insult; whoever rebukes a wicked man incurs abuse. 8 Do not rebuke a mocker or he will hate you; rebuke a wise man and he will love you. 9 Instruct a wise man and he will be wiser still; teach a righteous man and he will add to his learning. 10 "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. 11 For through me your days will be many, and years will be added to your life. Proverbs 10:8 8 The wise in heart accept commands, but a chattering fool comes to ruin. Proverbs 10:17 17 He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray. Proverbs 10:27 27 The fear of the LORD adds length to life, but the years of the wicked are cut short. Proverbs 12:1 1 Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid. Proverbs 13:1 1 A wise son heeds his father's instruction, but a mocker does not listen to rebuke. 3

Proverbs 13:10 10 Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is found in those who take advice. Proverbs 13:13-14 13 He who scorns instruction will pay for it, but he who respects a command is rewarded. 14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, turning a man from the snares of death. Proverbs 13:18 18 He who ignores discipline comes to poverty and shame, but whoever heeds correction is honored. Proverbs 14:2 2 He whose walk is upright fears the LORD, but he whose ways are devious despises him. Proverbs 14:9 9 Fools mock at making amends for sin, but goodwill is found among the upright. Proverbs 14:16 16 A wise man fears the LORD and shuns evil, but a fool is hotheaded and reckless. Proverbs 14:26-27 26 He who fears the LORD has a secure fortress, and for his children it will be a refuge. 27 The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, turning a man from the snares of death. Proverbs 15:5 5 A fool spurns his father's discipline, but whoever heeds correction shows prudence. Proverbs 15:10 4

10 Stern discipline awaits him who leaves the path; he who hates correction will die. Proverbs 15:12 12 A mocker resents correction; he will not consult the wise. Proverbs 15:16 16 Better a little with the fear of the LORD than great wealth with turmoil. Proverbs 15:31-33 31 He who listens to a life-giving rebuke will be at home among the wise. 32 He who ignores discipline despises himself, but whoever heeds correction gains understanding. 33 The fear of the LORD teaches a man wisdom, and humility comes before honor. Proverbs 16:6 6 Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for; through the fear of the LORD a man avoids evil. Proverbs 16:20 20 Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD. Proverbs 17:10 10 A rebuke impresses a man of discernment more than a hundred lashes a fool. Proverbs 19:16 16 He who obeys instructions guards his life, but he who is contemptuous of his ways will die. Proverbs 19:20 20 Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you will be wise. Proverbs 19:23 5

23 The fear of the LORD leads to life: Then one rests content, untouched by trouble. Proverbs 19:25 25 Flog a mocker, and the simple will learn prudence; rebuke a discerning man, and he will gain knowledge. Proverbs 19:27 27 Stop listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge. Proverbs 20:30 30 Blows and wounds cleanse away evil, and beatings purge the inmost being. Proverbs 21:11 11 When a mocker is punished, the simple gain wisdom; when a wise man is instructed, he gets knowledge. Proverbs 22:4 4 Humility and the fear of the LORD bring wealth and honor and life. Proverbs 23:9 9 Do not speak to a fool, for he will scorn the wisdom of your words. Proverbs 23:17 17 Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for the fear of the LORD. Proverbs 25:12 12 Like an earring of gold or an ornament of fine gold is a wise man's rebuke to a listening ear. Proverbs 28:13-14 13 He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. 6

14 Blessed is the man who always fears the LORD, but he who hardens his heart falls into trouble. Proverbs 28:23 23 He who rebukes a man will in the end gain more favor than he who has a flattering tongue. Proverbs 29:1 1 A man who remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed-- without remedy. Proverbs 29:25 25 Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is kept safe. Proverbs 31:30 [WIFE OF NOBLE CHARACTER] 30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. For more like this, visit the page of 7
