Patron: All humanity, any good activity, mothers, sailors, Benedictines, Carmelites, Cistercians, Jesuits, Dominicans, monks, nuns, United States Joseph took loving care of Mary and Jesus during his life. Augustine converted and during visits to the house of a friend with his mother and a few others they discussed religion and philosophy. BENEDICT SCHOLASTICA: Feast Day: February 10 Born: Norcia (March 2, 480 February 10, 543) Patron: Schools, tests, books, reading, invoked against storms and rain Benedict and Scholastica are twins that founded monastic communities. The brother and sister would visit each other once a year and enjoy prayer and conversation. Once Scholastica prayed for her brother to be able to stay longer and a severe storm prevented him from leaving. FRANCIS OF ASSISI CLARE: Feast Day: August 11 Born: Assisi (July 16, 1194 August 11, 1253) Patron: Eye disease, television, needle workers Clare had a great love for Christ and wanted to follow him in the same way as Francis. Both Francis and Clare lived a life of poverty, humility and charity as they dedicated themselves completely to Christ. Many people follow their example today by becoming members of the Franciscan Order. Ignatius guided his friend through spiritual exercises to bring him closer to Christ. Together, with a few other friends, they founded a religious order known as the Society of Jesus. They became missionaries telling others about the love of Christ. Both are mystics and wrote of the union of the human soul with God. JOHN OF THE CROSS: Feast Day: December 14 Born: Ávila (1542-December 14, 1591) Patron: Contemplative life, mystical theology, Spanish poets Teresa and John established the DIscalced Carmelite Order and together strived to encourage others to live a life of holiness. MARTIN DE PORRES ROSE OF LIMA: Feast Day: August 23 Born: Lima (April 20, 1586 August 24, 1617) Patron: Gardeners, florists, India, Latin America, Peru, for the resolution of family quarrels Martin and Rose shared a great love for the poor. Martin was known for his compassion and understanding and Rose for her prayer and fasting. During her difficulties Martin reminded Rose of her friendship with God. MARTIN DE PORRES: Feast Day: November 3 Born: Lima (December 9, 1579 November 3, 1639) Patron: Hair stylists, innkeepers, mixed-race people, the poor, public education, social justice, Peru Martin and Rose shared a great love for the poor. Martin was known for his compassion and understanding and Rose for her prayer and fasting. During her difficulties Martin reminded Rose of her friendship with God. Sts. CLAUDE DE LA COLOMBIÈRE MARGARET MARY: Feast Day: October 16 Born: France (July 22, 1647 October 17, 1690) Patron: Sacred Heart, those suffering with polio Claude was the spiritual director of Margaret Mary and together they spread devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Claude helped Margaret Mary to receive God s gifts with faith and humility. Jesus appeared to Margaret Mary and revealed his Sacred Heart which is full of love for humanity. CLAUDE DE LA COLOMBIÈRE: Feast Day: February 15 Born: France (February 2, 1641 February 15, 1682) Patron: Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Claude was the spiritual director of Margaret Mary and together they spread devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. They were the parents of nine children including St. Therese of Lisieux. Although they both desired to entire religious life, Louis became a watchmaker and Zelie a lacemaker.
