The Fatal Delusion of Self-Righteousness (The Parable of the Two Debtors) Lessons from the Parable:

Transcription:

Hallowed be His name Matthew 6:9 13: In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. NKJV The word hallowed means to make holy or to treat as holy, treat with reverence. God is holy and we don t need to forget who we are dealing with. But we do sometimes forget who we are dealing with, especially when we come in here half asleep, wanting me to hurry, mad at somebody, mouthing off, not ready to listen to God. Sometimes we need to be reminded of our place. Isaiah 6:1-5: In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one cried to another and said: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory! And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke. So I said: Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts. NKJV The lesson Isaiah learned was also a lesson Job learned. If Job had a fault, it was his tongue. He talked too much. Not that anyone could blame him. In two days he lost all of his possessions, his children, and his health. His wife told him to curse God and die; his friends accused him of sin. For 23 chapters they talked about God - each had his own interpretation of God. Then for 6 chapters Job gives his opinion about God. He defines God, explains God and reviews God, almost like he knows more about God than God does. Then God speaks for four long chapters! It wasn t long before Job realized he should have kept his big mouth shut. Job 38 Then the Lord answered Job from the whirlwind: Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorant words? Brace yourself like a man, because I have some questions for you, and you must answer them. Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you know so much. Who determined its dimensions and stretched out the surveying line? What supports its foundations, and who laid its cornerstone as the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy? Who kept the sea inside its boundaries as it burst from the womb, and as I clothed it with clouds and wrapped it in thick darkness? For I locked it behind barred gates, limiting its shores. I said, This far and no farther will you come. Here your proud waves must stop! Have you ever commanded the morning to appear and caused the dawn to rise in the east? Have you made daylight spread to the ends of the earth, to bring an end to the night s wickedness? As the light approaches, the earth takes shape like clay pressed beneath a seal; it is robed in brilliant colors. The light disturbs the wicked and stops the arm that is raised in violence. Have you explored the springs from which the seas come? Have you explored their depths? Do you know where the gates of death are located? Have you seen the gates of utter gloom? Do you realize the extent of the earth? Tell me about it if you know! Where does light come from, and where does darkness go? Can you take each to its home? Do you know how to get there? But of course you know all this! For you were born before it was all created, and you are so very experienced! Have you visited the storehouses of the snow or seen the storehouses of hail? (I have reserved them as weapons for the time of trouble, for the day of battle and war.) Where is the path to the source of light? Where is the home of the east wind? Who created a channel for the torrents of rain? Who laid out the path for the lightning? Who makes the rain fall on barren land, in a desert where no one lives? Who sends rain to satisfy the parched ground and make the tender grass spring up? Does the rain have a father? Who gives birth to the dew? Who is the mother of the ice? Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens? For the water turns to ice as hard as rock, and the surface of the water freezes. Can you direct the movement of the stars 1

binding the cluster of the Pleiades or loosening the cords of Orion? Can you direct the sequence of the seasons or guide the Bear with her cubs across the heavens? Do you know the laws of the universe? Can you use them to regulate the earth? Can you shout to the clouds and make it rain? Can you make lightning appear and cause it to strike as you direct? Who gives intuition to the heart and instinct to the mind? Who is wise enough to count all the clouds? Who can tilt the water jars of heaven when the parched ground is dry and the soil has hardened into clods? Can you stalk prey for a lioness and satisfy the young lions appetites as they lie in their dens or crouch in the thicket? Who provides food for the ravens when their young cry out to God and wander about in hunger? NLT Job barely has time to shake his head before he is asked another question. He cannot help but get the point. Only God defines God. You have to know the alphabet before you can read and God tells Job, You don t even know the ABC s of heaven, much less the vocabulary. For the first time, Job is quiet. Does Job get the message? I think so. Listen to his response Job 40:1-5: Then the Lord said to Job, Do you still want to argue with the Almighty? You are God s critic, but do you have the answers? Then Job replied to the Lord, I am nothing how could I ever find the answers? I will cover my mouth with my hand. I have said too much already. I have nothing more to say. NLT Notice the change. Before he heard God, Job couldn t speak enough. After he heard God, he couldn t speak at all. The only proper response was silence, and repentance: Job 42:1-6: Then Job replied to the Lord: I know that you can do anything, and no one can stop you. You asked, Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorance? It is I and I was talking about things I knew nothing about, things far too wonderful for me. You said, Listen and I will speak! I have some questions for you, and you must answer them. I had only heard about you before, but now I have seen you with my own eyes. I take back everything I said, and I sit in dust and ashes to show my repentance. NLT This is the attitude we should have in here and the one we should carry with us. Isaiah got the point; Job got the point have we! I. Only the holy I believe one of our greatest failings is in not realizing who God is and what His character is like. God is not human, He is God, and because of that there is an infinite gap between the highest in us and the lowest in God: Psalm 50:21 - you thought I was altogether like you NKJV This gap cannot be crossed from our side it has to be from God s side if at all, for God alone is holy. To be holy means to be set apart. God is set apart from sin, He is absolutely righteous and good. Since God is holy, He cannot allow sinners into His presence, He cannot tolerate sin, and we ve all sinned: Psalm 5:4-5: For you are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness, nor shall evil dwell with You. The boastful shall not stand in Your sight; You hate all workers of iniquity. NKJV Not only is God holy, but He expects us to be holy as well. 1 Peter 1:15-16: but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written Be holy, for I am holy. NKJV You may think God is asking too much, there is no way we can be holy and perfect. You are right - there is no way we can - by ourselves. By ourselves we are spiritual failures and at the complete mercy of God: 2

Isaiah 64:4-9: For since the world began, no ear has heard and no eye has seen a God like you, who works for those who wait for him! You welcome those who gladly do good, who follow godly ways. But you have been very angry with us, for we are not godly. We are constant sinners; how can people like us be saved? We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall, and our sins sweep us away like the wind. Yet no one calls on your name or pleads with you for mercy. Therefore, you have turned away from us and turned us over to our sins. And yet, O Lord, you are our Father. We are the clay, and you are the potter. We all are formed by your hand. Don t be so angry with us, Lord. Please don t remember our sins forever. NLT This poses a serious problem for the human race. Hebrews 12:14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord. NKJV What this verse is telling us is that only the holy will see God. Holiness is a prerequisite to heaven. Perfection is a requirement for eternity. We wish it wasn t so, we even act like it isn t so. We act like those who are decent will see God. We say that those who try hard will see God. We act like being good is enough to qualify us for heaven. Sounds right to us, but not to God! He sets the standard Himself: Matthew 5:48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect. NKJV You see, in God s plan, God is the standard for perfection - and we can t meet this standard. And God has never lowered His moral standard so we can meet it! And we can t compare ourselves to others; they are just as fouled up as we are. So what do/can we do? That is why Jesus is so important. Jesus died for us on the cross, for our sins, so that we can be made holy! 2 Corinthians 5:21 For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ. NLT II. Pursuing holiness Isaiah 59:2 - your iniquities have separated you from your God; and yours sins have hidden His face from you. NKJV Why do our sins separate us from God? Because He is holy! Isaiah 6:3 Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory. NKJV If we are to approach God, it must be on God s terms. Somehow, we must be made holy, just as holy as God is. Anything less and we will not be able to stand in the presence of God! If we want to be holy, we must purpose in our hearts to pursue holiness. To pursue holiness is to pursue God; to pursue God is something we cannot do half-heartedly: Jeremiah 29:13 - you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. NKJV To pursue God, we must first obey the gospel of Jesus Christ and be made holy by the blood of Jesus. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4: For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures NKJV 1 Peter 4:16-17: For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God? Now If the righteous one is scarcely saved, where will the ungodly and the sinner appear? NKJV 3

John 8:24 unless you believe that I AM who I claim to be, you will die in your sins. NLT Romans 10:9-10: that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. NKJV Acts 2:38 - Then Peter said to them, Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. NKJV Acts 22:16 And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord. NKJV Revelation 1:5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood NKJV When we are baptized into Christ, we are forgiven and made holy. At that time God adds us to His church, the body of Christ. When He looks at us as His child, doesn t see our sin, He sees the finished work of Christ! When we obey the gospel, we come before the judgment seat of God full of rebellion and mistakes. Because of His justice He cannot dismiss our sin, but because of His love for us, He cannot dismiss us. So, in the greatest act of love in the history of the universe, He punished Himself on the cross for our sins. In that way God s justice and love are equally honored. Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. NKJV III. Keys to remaining holy First would be daily confession of sin with a broken spirit and a contrite heart: Psalm 66:16-20: Come and listen, all you who fear God, and I will tell you what he did for me. For I cried out to him for help, praising him as I spoke. If I had not confessed the sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. But God did listen! He paid attention to my prayer. Praise God, who did not ignore my prayer or withdraw his unfailing love from me. NLT 1 John 1:8-10: If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. NKJV Then we need to meditate on the Word of God which means studying God s word and praying. Joshua 1:8 Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do. NLT It has been said that Sin will keep you from God s word and God s word will keep you from sin. Daily Bible study with a strong prayer life is fundamental to remaining holy and going on to perfection: 2 Timothy 3:16-17: All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. NKJV 4

How do we meditate on God s word? If you know how to worry you know how to meditate. Worry is just negative meditation. Worry is when you take a negative thought and think on it over and over and over. But when you take a verse of the Bible and think on it over and over and over - that s called meditation. So if you know how to worry, you know how to meditate. Philippians 4:6 - Don t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. NLT Thirdly, we need to praise God for all that He has done and is continuing to do in our lives and our world we need to thank Him for everything, because everything He does and gives us is for our own good. Psalm 29:2 - Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name, worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. NKJV Hebrews 13:15 Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name. NKJV And finally, we need to persevere, which means to never ever ever give up! You can t go through life quitting everything; you have to stay the course! 2 Peter 1:5-7: But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. NKJV Winston Churchill once said When you feel you cannot continue (go on) in your position for another minute, and all that is in human power has been done, that is the moment when the enemy is most exhausted, and when one step forward will give you the fruits of the struggle you have borne. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: Victory victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory however long and hard the road may be for without victory, there is no survival. 1 Peter 1:6-7: So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you have to endure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold - though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world. NLT IV. Conclusion This morning you may be a person who feels like you have gone too far, made too many mistakes, that you have outsinned the love of God, that there is no way a holy God could ever love you or forgive you. This morning you may be a person who has an emptiness inside a hole in your soul - you may be feeling a deep longing but you don t know what for. That deep longing is for God! John 14:23 Jesus answered and said to him, If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. NKJV God is the one who is calling out to you right now. He loves you with an everlasting love, He has pursued you, He wants to be your home, your dwelling place, and He wants to pour out His love in your heart. Why don t you answer His call, let Him in and let Him bring to you the peace that passes all understanding. Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. NKJV 5
