August 20th 2017 The 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time 4 LOOKING AHEAD Registration forms for the upcoming Winter Program (September 2016 thru April 2017) are coming in at a steady pace for students in grades two through eight. It is important that you return those bright yellow forms as soon as possible. We cannot process your application, if we do not have it and your first and second choice may become compromised. When registering a new student, 1st thru 8th grade, you must come into the Religion Office on the second floor of the Parish Center, Monday through Thursday, between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Please be sure to bring a copy of the child s Baptismal Certificate when you come. The fee of $175.00 per child is due at that time. SUMMER PROGRAM RELIGIOUS EDUCATION The Place for Learning and Praying Our Family/Children s Mass is Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Mary Donaldson, Director, Rita Minder, Assistant Religion Office Phone 864-3321 Fax 499-1530 maryccd@smrcc.org Our Summer Program officially ends today. It was a great two weeks thanks to Fr. Hewes, the teachers, helpers, students, staff and the parents. We had a few special events in our program this year. The first event was the Religious Freedom Program with Barbara Samuels and group which was very enlightening. The second event was a visit from the Dix Hills Fire Department with Firefighters Rich Sorentino and Mrs. Marina Rossi (the mother of one of our S/P students) whose lesson on personal safety in the home and community was great. The students loved the demonstration with the big super pumper fire engine. This past Friday, which was the last day of classes, everyone participated in the Salute to America finale. While this program is quite spirited, we all leave with a little more love for our country and truly proud to be an American. SPECIAL NOTE Again Mr. Luis Flores outdid himself with his Summer Program 2017 creation. He did a great job capturing the theme which was Discover God s Treasures. If you get a chance, come up to the second floor and see what he has done. It s amazing! TEACHERS While I realize that it is still summer, we are looking ahead to the 2017-2018 Winter Program that begins on September 25th and runs through the end of April 2018. Teachers are always needed. If you would like to teach, please contact the Religion office, we would love to have you join us. PHOTOGRAPHS Rosemary Femia, the professional photographer who takes the pictures for Confirmation and First Holy Communion, can be reached at this number (631) 586-0833. NOTE: The Religion office will be closed on Monday, 8/21 and Tuesday, 8/22.

August 20th 2017 The 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time 8 Catholics For Freedom of Religion www.cffor.org "Catholics For Freedom of Religion" was privileged to be invited to: "A New Catholic Movement in the United States" National Catholic Register, July 24, 2017 Over 100 Bishops joined 3,500 Catholic leaders, priests and religious from across the United States, as they gathered in Orlando, FL from July 1-4, for the unprecedented and invitationonly gathering of "Convocation of Catholic Leaders: The Joy of the Gospel in America." "It succeeded in gathering men and women who love the Church - from all over the U.S., from various cultural backgrounds and with different roles and perspectives in the Church,... with their bishops to pray together... and invite the Holy Spirit to lead us in going forth, said a key organizer. The attendees spent the days in prayer and discussion, hearing from a series of speakers on a specific theme each day. Nationally known speakers included Cardinal Timothy Dolan, NY, Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Washington, Archbishop Jose Gomez, Los Angeles, law professor Helen Alvare, and Supreme Knight Carl Anderson of the Knights of Columbus. The convocation strove to equip Catholic leaders with the tools, knowledge and common purpose to meet the next challenging years with confidence and the joy of discipleship. Catholics For Freedom of Religion was happy to provide our ideas and resources to laymen and clergy. We shared our mission to educate and inspire, on a non-partisan basis, for First Amendment Freedom of Religion - how rare it is, how dearly it was purchased for us and how quickly it can be lost. We were honored to be part of the Diocese of Rockville Centre delegation led by Bishop John Barres. "We are here at this convocation to set the course for what can be a new Catholic moment in the United States." Hosffman Ospino, Associate Professor, Boston College SENIOR NEWS YES After experiencing several delays of dates for the restaurant in Greenport, I have requested a switch to Monday, August 28. Everything else remains the same. The bus will leave at 9 am for the town of Greenport, where there will be time for browsing the shops. I'm told that there is a carousel and a lovely park, if you would prefer to sit and watch the world go by. We will then enjoy lunch at a waterside restaurant and after that, it's off to the beautiful Raphael Winery. Once there, we will enjoy a tasting of four wines, four varieties of cheeses, bread and accompaniments. On the way home, we will stop at a farm stand. The cost for the day will be $72 pp all inclusive including all tips. I'm happy that I was able to book it with no increase in price. I hope that this event will be as popular as it was last time. Those who signed up already, please call me to confirm because all the details were not clear at that time, and also the date has changed. Remember to pray for all those who are ill and for their loving caregivers. Pray always for those who protect us and this wonderful country that we live in. God bless America. See you in church, Pat 631-667-7922.
