More News and Notes ~Reminder~ We remind those who socialize and visit before or after mass, that doing so in the Church itself is disturbing to people who are trying to pray quietly. The church is a place of prayer both private and public and, most importantly, a Sacred Place. Community is important as a part of parish life, so we welcome you to converse in the Father Schuh Hall, the Fatima Room, or even outside if weather permits. Thank you for your cooperation. Bringing Up the Gifts at Sunday Mass If you, or your family, would like to bring up the bread and wine to be consecrated at our Sunday Masses, please see one of our Ushers when you arrive for Mass. They will appreciate your help, and this will save them some time as well. Religious Education Reminders Please remember: If the Green Bay Public Schools cancel for the day (or close during the day)for Snow or Any Other Reason, then there will be no Religious Education Classes that evening. If Snow (or other bad weather) begins AFTER school, parents are to use their own judgment; looking after the safety of their children. If uncertain, please call the Religious Education Office at 9204370651, or the parish office at 9204357548. In the event that Religious Education Classes are canceled for any reason, an Urgent Message will be sent out to those parishioners who have registered on our parish website, and have opted in to receive parish messages. If you are a Religious Education Parent or Staff Member, and you have not yet registered on the parish website, please do so. If you need help registering, please visit the parish office. In addition to sending out a message, we will also notify WBAY, WLUK, WFRV, WGBA, so they can list us among the Weather Closings. To be on the safe side, Please be sure when dropping your children off for Religious Education that they are safely inside before you leave. Pope Francis Prayer Intentions for January: Universal:That those from diverse religious traditions and all people of good will may work together for peace. Dear Parish Family ~ This past week, we have been praying as part of a National Novena to end the scourge of abortion. Please join us in doing something to secure the rights of the preborn, and of the terminally ill. More information can be found on the website of USCCB; http://www.usccb.org, Check it out. Also, mark your family calendars, and join us for the annual Respect Life Mass, here at Ss. Peter & Paul Parish; celebrated by Bishop Ricken. The Mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 30 th, at 7:00 PM. Social time and refreshments will follow in the Fr. Schuh Hall. Time Out with The Word For This Sunday! Not words, but deeds. On these Sundays of Ordinary Time, the Old Testament prepares us for the Gospel. Faithful Jews considered Nineveh to be beyond redemption, hopelessly pagan, utterly corrupt, and not open to that to which the God of Israel was calling them. Yet, less than one day into Jonah's mission, to the prophet's great surprise (and to some extent, to his chagrin), the entire population responded, not in words but in deeds; with sackcloth and fasting! Soon, our 40 days of lenten fasting and penance will begin. On Ash Wednesday, February 18 th, you will hear the words Repent, and Believe in the Gospel. Discipleship is a twofold process: Leave the past, and embrace the future. Turn your back on where you have been, and Come, Follow Me. St. Paul reminds us, Time is running out! Not words, but deeds! A question for this week: How will Jesus' words today move me, in this coming week, to a commitment of belief and witness, of compassion and service; as Jonah's preaching moved the people in today's Scripture reading? Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion: Please Checkin at the Mass you attend, and sign the book if there is a space open. You may also write in your name ahead for dates when you know you will be present, and are willing to minister. At present, we only require 2 ministers per Mass. All Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion need to contact the Parish Office if you wish to continue in this ministry; including those who bring Holy Communion to the homebound. All of these are considered Extraordinary Ministers... To perform this ministry, you must be registered, active members of our 4 parish, and be practicing Catholics. You must attend a 1 hour seminar of the spirituality of the Extraordinary Minister. Mark your calendars for Friday, January 30 th, after the 8am Mass, and Saturday, January 31 st, after the 8am Mass. Those new, and seasoned ministers who attend, will have their names submitted for acceptance by the Bishop. Once we have his approval, we will schedule a public installation ceremony. **Remember: Ordinarily, you should only be an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion for 3 consecutive years, and then step out for a time; allowing others to take an active role in this ministry. I would like you to make the decision whether to stay on, or take some time out at this point. Holy Hour of Power: Everyone is cordially invited to attend our 3 rd (and final) of three Holy Hours requested by our Bishop Sunday, February 8 th, at 3:00pm. Our theme will be Perseverance in Prayer. Please plan on attending along with your family; and invite a friend or neighbor to come along. At the end of this special hour with the Lord, the Blessing of Throats will be extended to all in attendance. Peace, Joy, and Love in the Lord, Fr. Obras, no sólo palabras! KC Essay Contest Winners Three of the Culture of Life Essay Contest Winners, at St. Thomas More School in Green Bay, are from Saints Peter & Paul Parish: Diego Sepulveda (7th grade/2nd place), Kevin Wengrzyn (8th grade/1st place), and Alyssa Plog (8th grade/2nd place). Our congratulations to these three, and to the other winners as well! What does Pro Populo, SsPP mean in the Mass Intentions? The Latin words Pro Populo mean For the People. When you see Pro Populo, SsPP listed in our Mass Intentions, that Mass is being offered for the good of the people of Ss. Peter & Paul Parish, both living and deceased. Normally, one such Mass is offered every Sunday, and on all other Holy Days of Obligation, by the assigned pastor. 5
