Lois Lowry By:Brooke Modderman

Lois Lowry Background Born: March 20, 1937 (age 79) Spouse: Donald Grey Lowry Parents: Robert Hammersberg, Katherine Hammersberg Lois Lowry was one of three children in her family. She had an older sister Helen, and a younger brother Jon. Lois grew up keeping to herself, doing things on her own, and always having her head in a book. This was different than her other two siblings who were always active doing something, or interacting with people. Lois father was in the military, so her and her family traveled and moved all over. Also, when Lois was a sophomore in college she married a naval officer.

The Giver Summary: The Giver is about a young boy named Jonas, who lives in this utopia with the rest of his family and friends. The people in this utopia live in a community, and have no contact with anybody outside of their own community. In Jonas community everything is the same. Each family has a mom, dad, one girl, and one boy. Every family is chosen by the higher authorities, and every child is assigned to their job that best fits them at the age of 12, at this thing called the ceremony of twelves. At the ceremony of twelves, Jonas was chosen to be the next receiver. This means he receives memories about the past, and the current receiver gives Jonas all of them. This affects Jonas dramatically and makes him realize new things about the world and his community.

Passage from The Giver Then all of the citizens had been ordered to go into the nearest building and stay there. IMMEDIATELY, the rasping voice through the speakers had said. LEAVE YOUR BICYCLES WHERE THEY ARE. Instantly, obediently, Jonas had dropped his bike on its side on the path behind his family s dwelling. He had run indoors and stayed there, alone. His parents were both at work, and his little sister, lily, was at the Childcare Center where she spent her after-school hours. Looking through the front window, he had seen no people: none of the busy afternoon crew of Street Cleaners, Landscape Workers, and Food Delivery people who usually populate the community at that time of day. He saw only the abandoned bikes here and there on their sides; an upturned wheel on one was still revolving slowly. He had been frightened then. The sense of his own community silent, waiting, had made his stomach churn. He had trembled.

Author's Style in The Giver The Giver is written in a pretty straight forward way, so it is easy to understand and a quick read. You won t get sidetracked with complicated words while reading this book. Although, this does not mean this is a childish book, it s a very deep book that makes you think about the world around you. This book is written with a lot of layers to it, and contains a lot of imagery.

Authors Style in Number the Stars There's nothing more emotional and complicated to write about than the Holocaust. In Number the Stars Lois Lowry does a great job keeping the language plain and simple while still adding the emotion that it deserves. This story s point of view is from the narrator, Annemarie Johansen, but is told through a third-person narrative. The Resistance fighters were Danish people no one knew who, because they were very secret who were determined to bring harm to the Nazis however they could. They damaged the German trucks and cars, and bombed their factories. They were very brave. Sometimes they were caught and killed.

My Opinion on The Giver I really enjoyed reading The Giver. It is one of my favorite books now. One reason I enjoyed The Giver was because of the setting it was in. The book was placed in a utopia and it was really interesting to see all the things that have personality in our world today that wasn t there in the book. In the book, there were rules for everything, and everything was the same. Another thing that intrigued me about the book was Jonas character. I really liked reading about his thoughts and how he was reacting to what was going on throughout the book. Reading the book really makes me want to see the movie.
