S p e a k i n g a t t h e ordination of 19 new priests for the diocese of Rome, Pope Francis told them: With baptism, you unite new faithful to the People of God. It is never necessary to refuse baptism to someone who asks for it! And in the Sacrament of Reconciliation You will be in the confessional to forgive, not to condemn. Imitate the Father who never tires of forgiving. On Mother s Day in St. Peter s Square, Pope Francis offered greetings to all mothers everywhere. We remember with gratitude and affection all mothers, all of our dear mothers: those who live with us physically but also those who live with us spiritually. The Lord bless them all, and may the Mother of God, to whom this month is dedicated, watch over them all. Mary attests that the mercy of the Son of God knows no bounds and extends to everyone, without exception. Meeting with about 5,000 members of the Cursillo movement, Pope Francis told them: One important thing about your movement: you have n o t e n g a g e d i n proselytism, or in shouting matches, or forcing fliers into people s hands, but instead you offer friendship, kindness and a Christian witness. The Church does not grow through proselytism, but through witness, as Pope Benedict told us. When you realize that God has been so good, so tender, so merciful this has to come out, and has to be shared with others. Those who experience God s love and mercy are called in turn to show love and mercy for others. At a meeting with athletes in an Italian sports association, Pope Francis said: Never let practice and competition get in the way of going to Mass, studying for school, being with friends, and helping the poor. Every sport has its worth not just in physical and social benefits, but also morally, in the ways it can offer people, especially kids, a chance to experience a more balanced life, self-control, sacrifice and loyalty toward others. And he told the athletes to never let the high pressure and high stakes involved in competition lead them to take shortcuts, as happens in the case of doping. How awful and sterile is a victory when it is gained by breaking the rules and deceiving others. Spend your life on what really matters and what lasts forever, and put your talents at the service of bringing people together: friendship and inclusion. Sports done right help build a more caring, brotherly and just world.
