REFORM OF HEZEKIAH (C.2.WINTER.10) Biblical Reference 2 Chronicles 29:1-6, 30:1, 13, 21,26-27. 2 Kings 18:17, 18:28-30, 19:15-16, 19:35-36 Key Verse 2 Chronicles 29:27-28 Key Concept I trust God in times of danger and ask for your help in times of need. Educational Objectives At the end of the class today, the children will be able to: 1. Reflect on ways we worship God. 2. Consider bringing needs to God 3. Express in prayer that everyone will rely on the Lord for their problems and hope in Him Life Application Hezekiah was a king who did the right things in the sight of God. He was the one who opened the doors of the temple and repaired. He was always thinking that whatever he did, it would be in fear of God. What a wonderful example we can find through the life of King Hezekiah. A Godfearing man who came to God in time of need with the confidence of being heard. Today, children will learn that we have a real and living God who is ready to listen, no matter our condition, God expects us to go to Him in time of need. They will learn to be confident and share their problems with the Lord. INSTRUCTIONS Introduction: Find some carpenter tools such as hammer, paint cans, brushes, or musical instruments. Put them on the table and allow a few minutes the children to share what the items are used for. Explain that today we will discover the story of a king named Hezekiah and how he repaired and cleaned up the temple. He encouraged the people to worship God again. Review: Have children share their experiences of forgiveness from the past week. If they brought their take home sheet, they can put it in their folder. My GROW Adventure with God Weekly Review: As children enter take time to have them reflect on their adventure with God booklets and either discuss or use art materials to express their journey during the past week. You may wish to add any art work, written poems, prayers or songs to a GROW wall in the room. You can find my GROW Adventure with God materials on the Covchurch.org website in the same place as the Adventures with God sessions. Opening Prayer: Gather children around a candle. Light the candle and explain that we are entering into a special time with God. Encourage the children to hold their hands out in front of them palms up as a sign they are ready to receive what God has for them today. Prayer Example: Lord God, thank you for making us, for loving us, for forgiving us, and guiding us. We know you are here with us right now. As we enter into your word, the Bible, help us draw close to you, to understand and to listen to what you have to say to us. Amen (For safety sake, you may wish to extinguish the candle after the prayer) Bible Reading: Explain that as we read the Bible we do that first to spend time with God. Children can remain with hands out stretched palms up to receive the word as it s being read. Alternatively they can be invited to draw what they hear. Read the Bible passage for the day two times and ask children to respond. Question examples: What did you notice in this story? How does it make you feel? Was there anything you would ask God about that you didn t understand or was confusing? Is God saying anything to you though the story? Bible Exploration: Explain: It is important to remember that before Hezekiah, God s people were ruled by kings that practiced idolatry and depart from the right ways of God. Each of the ancestors of kings Hezekiah was punished for his disobedience. Conversely Hezekiah trusted in the Lord even the most critical moments. 2 P a g e

Read 2 Chronicles 29:1-6 1. What kind of person is King Hezekiah? 2. Do you know anyone who is like him? 3. How might you be like King Hezekiah? Read 2 Chronicles 30:1, 13, 21, 26-27 1. Give each child a piece of paper. Have them write Come worship God on the paper and roll it up like a scroll. This is their worship invitation. Next use paper plates and paper to make horns, cymbal s and drums. 2. Worship Rally: Discuss: a. Line up half the children on one side of the room and line the other half on the other side of the room. Have the children face each other. The person across from them is their partner. b. When you say let s worship, all the children from the 1 st line run to their partner in the second line and hand them their scroll. Their partner must unroll and read the scroll out loud. c. Next, both partners run back together to the spot where the line was formed. The second child gives their scroll to the 1 st child and the 1 st child must unroll and read scroll out loud. d. Then all the partners run back to their spot on the second line. This time they play their musical instruments. e. Finally all partners run back to their spot on the first line kneel down and pray prayers of praise. 1. What are ways you worship God? 2. Why do we worship God? 3. Hezekiah invited people to worship God. Who and how might you invite others to worship? 3 P a g e

Read: 2 Kings 18:17, 18:28-30, 19:15-16, 19:35-36 and look at the illustrations: messengers of the Assyrian, King Assyria prepares to attack Jerusalem. 1. What is the Assyrian messenger saying to the people about Hezekiah? About God? 2. How do you think the people were feeling? 3. How does Hezekiah respond? 4. What kind of help do you ask God for? 5. How can we worship God even when things are not going well? Remind the children that even if a prayer is not answered in the way we might hope God still loves us and is with us to help us through difficult situations. Activity: Give each activity sheet. They will find in this word search with the words that are important and are related to what they have seen through the story of King Hezekiah who has taught us to trust, to place our problems in the hands of the Lord through the prayer and to wait for Him to answer according to his will. Today's GROW Adventure with God Review: G: God's Word: What is the story? (give children an opportunity to express their understanding of the story). R: Relationships: Is there anything in today's bible story that shows us how we should or shouldn't share God's love with others? (Remind children that sometimes God uses the stories of the bible to show us how we shouldn't act toward God or others and give them a chance to consider how we might show God's love instead). O: Outward Action: Is there anything in the bible story that shows us how we should help or serve God or others? (Explore concrete ways the children could live this out in the coming week). W: Worship: Is there anything in the bible story that shows us how we should accept God's love for us and others? Ask: How do you feel about God? How would you like to respond to God? What would you like to say to God? 4 P a g e

Closing Prayer: Gather children around the candle again. As you light the candle explain that the flame is something that is present in the light and the darkness. In the same way, it reminds us that God is always with us. Is there anything anyone wishes to say to God? After children have responded, close the prayer time. Prayer Example: Lord God, we thank you that you are always with us, and always love us. It s good to be with you. Thank you for what we have learned today. Thank you for being with us and for teaching us through the Bible. Help us to remember what you have taught us today and to live it out when we leave. Amen 5 P a g e

TAKE HOME WORKSHEET WORSHIPPING GOD Make note of times when you worship and praise God this week or ask for his help. Remember to get close to Him in prayer. Remember that God is always ready to listen and even if a prayer is not answered in the way we might want. God is still with us, still loves us, and will help us through difficult situations. " I call out to the LORD, and he answers me from his holy mountain." (Psalm 3:4) DAY ACTIVITY 1 ACTIVITY 2 ACTIVITY 3 ACTIVITY 4 Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday 11 P a g e
