UNIT 13 Session 6 Leader DEVOTIONAL Leaders: this is just for you! Read ahead of time to engage with the Bible story on an adult level and prepare your heart to teach on Sunday. He s a chip off the old block. Like father, like son. The apple doesn t fall far from the tree. These idioms exist because sons tend to look and behave like their fathers. When it came to Hezekiah and his father, Ahaz, however, the two were far from similar. When Ahaz was king of Judah, he did not respect God, God s law, or God s prophets. He worshiped idols. Ahaz did not do what was right in the sight of the Lord his God (2 Kings 16:2). He led the people away from God, provoking God s wrath and anger. Hezekiah, on the other hand, did what was right in the Lord s sight just as his ancestor David had done. Hezekiah destroyed the places of idol worship and cleansed the temple. (See 2 Chron. 29.) The Lord was with Hezekiah, and Hezekiah prospered. Hezekiah was a faithful king who led the people of Judah to worship God like they were supposed to, but even good kings are sinners. His wealth and success led to pride. How did Hezekiah react when God said everything in his palace would be carried off to Babylon? Who cares? I ll be dead by then. Jesus is our faithful King who never sinned. Check out some of these definitions for the word faithful: strict or thorough in the performance of duty ; true to one s word, promises, or vows ; steady in allegiance or affection ; loyal ; constant ; reliable, trusted, or believed ; adhering or true to fact, a standard, or an original ; accurate. Jesus completed His work the redemption of sinners. He said on the cross, It is finished! (John 19:30). Jesus is faithful over God s house as a Son. (Heb. 3:6) His obedience is steadfast. (Isa. 50:4-10) Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Heb. 13:8). One day Jesus will return to make all things the way they are supposed to be. (Rev. 1:1-6)

The BIBLE STORY Hezekiah, Judah s Faithful King 2 Kings 18 19 Hezekiah was a young man when he became the king of Judah. He did what God said was right, just like his relative King David did. Hezekiah trusted God, and God was with him. One day, the evil king of Assyria attacked Israel the land north of Judah. The army made all the people go to Assyria. A few years later, the king of Assyria and his army came to Judah. Hezekiah was afraid. He told the king of Assyria, Please go away; I will give you as much money as you want. The king said, Give me eleven tons of silver and a ton of gold. Hezekiah did not have that much silver and gold! Hezekiah took the silver that was in God s temple and in the palace. The temple doors had gold on them, so he took the gold off the doors and the doorposts, and he gave it to the king of Assyria. But the king of Assyria did not go away. He sent his leaders to talk to Hezekiah. You should just give up, they said. Hezekiah sent a message to Isaiah the prophet. Pray for us! Ask God to protect us! Hezekiah said. Isaiah said, God says, Don t be afraid. The king of Assyria will go home, and he will die there. Then Hezekiah got a letter from the leaders in Assyria. The letter said, God is not going to protect you. Hezekiah went to the temple. He spread out the letter and prayed, God, please save us from the evil king of Assyria. Then everyone will know that You are the one true God. God heard Hezekiah s prayer. God was not going to let Assyria attack Hezekiah s city. That night, the angel of the Lord went into the camp where the Assyrian army was staying. Many of the enemy soldiers were killed. The next day, the king of Assyria went home. He died too, just like God said he would. Christ Connection: Hezekiah prayed that God would save His people from their enemies so that everyone would know He is the one true God. Jesus also prayed for His people. Then Jesus, the Son of God, died on the cross and rose again to save people from sin.

Small Group OPENING Welcome time Greet kids as they arrive. Use this time to help new kids connect to your group. As kids arrive, ask them if they have ever seen God answer prayer. Talk to them about what it was like to see God work and how it made them feel about God. Say Today we will hear a story about a king of Judah who prayed for God to save His people from their enemies. Do you think God protected them or allowed them to be conquered? We ll learn more about it later. Activity page Hidden Scrolls activity page, 1 per child Lead kinders to find and circle the five hidden scrolls. Say King Hezekiah got a letter from the leaders in Assyria. They planned to attack Judah. The letter said, God is not going to protect you. Hezekiah was afraid, but he did the best thing we can do when we are afraid: he prayed. Let s find out what God did in today s Bible story. Key passage activity Key Passage Poster paper beanbag Write one word of the key passage on separate sheets of paper. Spread the words on the floor in a hopscotch pattern. Using a beanbag, play hopscotch with the kids. Encourage players to say the passage as they hop onto each word or phrase except the one where the beanbag landed. Instruct the rest of the class to shout out the word or phrase that the hopper skips over. Say In our story today, Hezekiah spread the letter from Assyria out on the floor to pray about it. God answered Hezekiah s prayer in a big way. God used Isaiah, a prophet, to deliver His message of deliverance to Hezekiah. Now that Jesus has come, God s messages to us come from Jesus, in the Bible. Session Starter: Play a color game red, green, yellow, and blue construction paper, 2 of each color masking tape Tape pieces of red, green, yellow, and blue construction paper in the four corners of the room. Hold the other four papers in your hand. Explain that when you hold up a paper, kinders must go to the corner with the matching color. Between rounds, kinders should go to the middle of the room. Play as time allows. Say You all had to go to the wall with the color I was holding up. In today s Bible story, the Assyrian army attacked Israel and made all the people go to Assyria. Then the evil king of Assyria headed for Judah! Let s find out what happened. Transition to Large Group Bible study To gain the attention of all the kinders to move them to Large Group, flip off the lights or clap a simple rhythm for the children to copy. Invite kinders to make prayer hands as they move to Bible study.

Small Group ACTIVITIES Bible story review & Bible skills Bibles, 1 per kid Main Point Posters from Unit 13 Bible Story Pictures from Unit 13 (on your bulletin board) Give each child a Bible and help him find 2 Kings 18 19. Tell kids that you are going to ask some questions about the Bible story. If kids don t remember an answer, look for the answer together as a class in the Bible give kids the verse reference where the answer can be found, help them find that verse as needed, and then either read the verse aloud or have a kid who is a strong reader read aloud. Questions: What was the name of the faithful king in the story? (Hezekiah, 2 Kings 18:1) Hezekiah was king over what kingdom? (Judah, 2 Kings 18:1) Which country tried to invade Judah? (Assyria, 2 Kings 18:17) Where did Hezekiah get the gold and silver to give to the Assyrian army? (God s temple and the royal treasury, 2 Kings 18:15) What did Hezekiah ask Isaiah to do? (Pray for him, 2 Kings 19:1-4) How did God answer Hezekiah s prayer? (God saved the city of Jerusalem and killed many of the Assyrian soldiers, 2 Kings 19:35) How many Gods are there? There is one true God who alone deserves worship. Option: Retell or review the Bible story using the bolded text of the Bible story script. Say Hezekiah prayed to God, and God answered Hezekiah s prayer. God always hears the prayers of His people, and He always answers them. We may not always get the answer we want or the answer we expect. If we have sin that we need to confess, He wants to deal with that first. But God always answers our prayers. Hezekiah prayed for God to rescue Judah from Assyria, but we need to be rescued from an even greater enemy: sin! God sent Jesus to rescue us from sin. If we pray to God to save us from our sin through Jesus, He will always answer yes, like He did for Hezekiah. Main Point Review Review and sum up Unit 13: tape the Bible story pictures to a wall at the kids' height. Mix up the Main Point posters. One by one, invite kids to match the main point to the Bible Story. When kids match the main point to a picture, ask them what they can remember from that Bible story. Play again as time allows. Engage Option 1: Prayer book white paper construction paper stapler markers or crayons stickers

Give each child a few sheets of white paper and a sheet of colored construction paper. Help them fold all the papers in half. Direct them to slip the white paper into the folded construction paper so that the creases are aligned on the same side to form a booklet. Help the kids staple the spine to hold it together. Provide markers, crayons, and stickers to decorate their book. Help the kids write Prayer Book on the front cover and the main point on the first page. Say Hezekiah prayed that God would save the people of Judah from their enemies. God answered Hezekiah s prayer. God always answers prayers, though it may not always be the answer we want. We can keep track of what we pray and when God answers using our prayer books! You can record different things you have asked God for, and when you get a clear answer you can write it down! That way, you can remember how God is always faithful. Option 2: Play Duck, duck, pray Invite kinders to sit in a circle on the floor. Say Hezekiah (HEZ ih kigh uh) and lead kinders to repeat after you until they can pronounce the name correctly. Then play this version of Duck, Duck, Goose. Invite kinders to sit in a circle. Choose one child to be It. It walks around the outside of the circle, gently tapping each child on the shoulder and says one word of the main point for each tap, God, answered, Hezekiah s, prayer. When It taps a child and says, prayer, the child tapped must chase It around the circle until It sits in the open spot. That child is now It. Play several times. At the end of the game, invite children to remain in the circle as you lead them in prayer. Say God, You are the one true God. No one is like You! Thank You that when Hezekiah prayed, You answered Hezekiah s prayer and saved Your people from their enemies. Thank You for sending Your Son to die on the cross and rise again to save us from sin. Thank You that even now Jesus is still praying for us. Prayer Time Class prayer request notebook Invite each child to think of a prayer she wants to see God answer. It could be about a friend who doesn t love Jesus, a sick grandparent, or something hard going on at school. If kids made Prayer Books in the previous activity, lead kids to write this prayer in their Prayer Book. Encourage kids to pray about anything and everything that matters to them. Say The Bible tells us to cast all our cares on God, because He cares for us. [See 1 Peter 5:7.] That means that whether your prayer seems important or silly, God wants to hear about it. God always answers the prayers of His people, but He doesn t always give us what we want. Sometimes God asks us to wait patiently, or He says no to something that is not His plan for us. The best thing for us is salvation from Jesus. If we pray for salvation, God always says yes! Take prayer requests and record them in the class notebook. Pray, thanking God for always answering prayers. Thank Him for always saying yes when we pray for salvation through Jesus. Closing and Pick-Up Bible Story Coloring Page, 1 per kid crayons or markers Big Picture Cards After prayer time is done, continue any unfinished activities and/or let kids color this week s Bible Story Coloring Page until parents arrive. Send each kid home with this week's Big Picture Card so kids and their parents can interact with the biblical content at home.
