WARDEN S NOTES The news in the last couple of weeks has been terrible; school shootings in America, the abuse of young footballers here in the UK, and closer to home a huge increase in Anti-Social Behaviour here in Tameside. It is easy to say that these types of things always happened, that we did not have immediate news before, but that is not the reason. Whatever the figures say, crime is on the increase, but the figures are being manipulated to try to prove the opposite, simply because our lawmakers are afraid of being proved wrong in their attitude to justice; they are also more worried about upsetting any minority group who claim that crime is caused by governments and not by the criminals themselves. We may not be direct victims of these crimes but surely all decent people are victims because it is affecting society at a level we perhaps cannot see but is there all the same. What worries me most is that we are beginning to treat these atrocities as normal. How can that be? I am concerned about the individualistic approach to life; the it s all about me attitude to living, which is undermining decent society. I can t help thinking that the answer to these problems is the lack of spirituality. Perhaps if Religious Education was included in all schools curriculum it would encourage people to think about their fellow human beings a bit more and to think about what is right and what is wrong. Perhaps if people hear the messages of Jesus, the Prophet Mohammed, the Dalai Lama and other faith leaders a bit more they will begin to understand the world and act properly. We can only hope and pray that this happens. Ken Howard

MINISTER We have now been included on the Vacant Pulpit List managed by The General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches, we are offering a 50% Stipend and 50% Manse Allowance. To date we have not received any replies and/or applications. In the meantime, we will ensure that we arrange Lay People to conduct services every Sunday. FAVOURITE HYMNS SERVICE There are slips at the back of church for you to select your favourite hymn. We will pick the ten most popular hymns and then organise a suitable date for this popular service. Please make your selection as soon as possible. PEOPLE Quite a few members of our congregation are extremely unwell and are simply unable to get to church to attend services. We would like them and their families to know that they are constantly in our thoughts and in our prayers. DOB LANE CHAPEL Sue and myself were invited to the final service at Dob Lane Chapel. Although this was a sad occasion it was handled beautifully by Rev A R Parker and the Dob Lane congregation. Following the service, the Dob Lane congregation presented us with an embroidery of The Lord s Prayer. This was made many years ago by a member of the Dob Lane congregation who now lives in America. This is now on display on the pulpit, we will shortly add a plaque to explain its provenance. This was a wonderful gesture. We wish the Dob Lane congregation well and hope that some of them will be able to join us for worship from time to time.

EAST CHESHIRE UNION OF UNITARIAN AND FREE CHRISTIAN CHURCHES SONGS OF PRAISE SERVICE This will be held at Stalybridge on Sunday 11 th March at 11 am. All the ECU congregations will pick a favourite hymn and we will sing these interspersed with prayers and readings. This is a very enjoyable service. Please try to attend, it is a good opportunity to meet Unitarians from other local churches. ARTS AND CRAFTS Following the service on 4 th March we will be having a soup and sweet lunch; following this we will be holding an Arts and Crafts preparation afternoon. All Stalybridge entries MUST be brought to church on Sunday 1 st April. Please try to enter as many exhibits as possible. The Exhibition will be held at Old Chapel Dukinfield on Saturday 12 th May. GOOD FRIDAY WALK We have decided to bring back the Good Friday Walk. This will take place on Friday 30 th March. Jennifer and Bill will be designing a walk/ramble suitable for all with a pub at the midway point to help us along our way. People who walk will be asking for sponsorship as this is a fund-raising event. We will be meeting at church at 9.30 am. People without cars will be given lifts to the starting point in Greenfield. Further details will shortly appear on the notice board. PALM SUNDAY SERVICE This will be held on Sunday 25 th March at 11 am and will be conducted by Rev Andrew Parker. Please come along to welcome Andrew to Stalybridge. MOTHERING SUNDAY SERVICE This will be held on Sunday 11 th March and will be conducted by Jennifer Price. All ladies will be presented with a small posy.

EASTER DAY SERVICE This will be held on Sunday 1 st April and will be conducted by Ken Howard. CHURCH REDECORATION The committee has appointed Batemans Decorators of Bolton to re-decorate the main worship area of the church. This is obviously an expensive undertaking, but it is vital that we keep on top of the maintenance and upkeep of the building. The starting date has not yet been finalised. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WE SUPPORT ALL OUR FUND-RAISING ACTIVITIES TO HELP TO PAY FOR THIS WORK. Fun at the Board Games and Pancake Supper Evening

FUND RAISING AND SOCIAL GROUP Many thanks to all who turned up for the board games and pancake night on 2 nd February. A good time was had by all and we managed to make 125 towards our fund raising pot. Let s hope this is the start of things to come and we manage to make plenty of money this year. We have had a lot of work done to the church building already and there is more yet to do (including decorating) so all funds are gratefully received. We sent surveys out last month asking people what kind of entertainment they wanted, but sadly have only had five returned please let us know what you want to do! Our next event will be a soup and sweet lunch to be served after the morning service on Sunday 4 th March. We need your names on the list for this so we know how many to cater for. The cost will be 6 per adult. Following this, we will be holding a craft afternoon when we will be looking for people who can advise and help with projects for the Arts and Crafts. If you think your expert knowledge can be passed on, please come along. Items such as empty boxes and tubes, pieces of felt, dried pressed flowers are all required, so please come along if you would like to help. Why not come along for your lunch and then stay on and be arty? Later on in March, Jennifer (with a bit of help) will be organising a sponsored walk which will be held on Good Friday on 30 th March. If you want to take part and need a lift to go to the start, please be at church on Good Friday 30 th at 9.30am. If you want to make your own way to the start, details will be made available as well as the name of a suitable pub (about half way round) where the walkers can stop for lunch and friends can meet up or join in the walk at this point. Sponsorship forms will be available shortly. On Monday 9 th April, we shall be holding a coffee morning and bring and buy starting at 10.30am. Please come along with friends and neighbours for a drink and a natter. Finally, please note we have arranged a games night, which will involve pub -type games as well as simple table tennis and indoor carpet bowls, which will be held on Friday 20 th April. Refreshments will also be served. A list will go up on the board shortly, so please put your names up so we can sort out refreshments. It will be suitable for both adults and children and promises to be good fun. Price as usual will be 6 for adults and 3 for children. Don t forget to fill in your surveys and please try and support our events. Sue Howard
