Eternal Light Volume 75, Issue 6 MARCH 2017 The Mitzvah of Blotting Out Amalek 18th Annual Magical Mitzvah Day Sunday, March 5 10am - 1 pm Friday, March 24 6pm Special Shabbat Service followed by ONEG honoring the marriage of Rabbi Jordan & Beth Goldson Thursday, April 27th Sunday, May 7th Purim, which falls this year on Saturday, March 11 th, opens on a somber note. Haman is identified as the descendant of Amalek, whose people attacked Israel in the desert. It was Amalek who attacked the newly freed slaves from behind, thus taking advantage of those who were weak and therefore slow. Thus it is incumbent on us to remember that that God (and the Israelites) has a war with the Amalekites in the hope that we can blot this evil out. In other words, Jews are obligated to work for the end of oppression of the weak everywhere, and a temporary, partial victory should not blind us to the persistence of evil in the world. On the Shabbat before Purim, the portion of the Torah dealing with Amalek is read. This day is called Shabbat Zachor, the Sabbath of Remembrance. It is a special mitzvah of the Torah to hear the reading and thus remember. Zachor [remembrance] is a mitzvah that has made modern Jews uncomfortable. The natural desire to forget and be happy collides with the ongoing pain of memory and analysis. When asked why President Ronald Reagan in 1985 initially declined to visit the Dachau concentration camp, a presidential aide explained that the President was an up type of person and did not like to grovel in a grisly thing.

That part of America which had encouraged them most had advanced most rapidly in population, agriculture and the arts. -James Madison, 1787 When I was president of the Baton Rouge Bar Association, I had the honor of participating in two naturalization ceremonies. When you are born in this country it is easy to overlook the privilege of being a citizen of the United States. Naturalized citizens do not have to be reminded. They labored and sacrificed for the right. The fifty-one new citizens in those ceremonies had diverse names like Vu, Estrada, Oliviera, and Kaur. Like the name Jalenak, their names will be mispronounced and misspelled. However, they are all American names, because this is a country of immigrants. Therefore, I was particularly proud of our youth group for hosting a social this month for six refugee teens from Syria, Iraq and Tanzania. They enjoyed crafts and games and wore out the Google Translate app on their smart phones. I know that our youth group enjoyed the experience. But, I hope the experience also left them with a deeper appreciation for the courageous leap of faith made by their ancestors to travel to this country for a better life. Immigration continues to be an embattled topic. Regardless of your views on immigration, the historic and unprecedented achievements of this great country are due to the diversity of the immigrants who populated it. Speaking of welcoming those new to our land, I look forward to seeing our Congregation welcome Beth Goldson on March 24. The Mitzvah of Blotting Out Amalek (continued from page 1) Many people today prefer to be future-oriented and they stress the need to forgive. They argue that there will be no reconciliation as long as the memories of the cruelties and atrocities of the past are preserved and thrown in the face of those involved. Forget and forgive becomes the slogan. This argument can even take the form of an attack on the victims for keeping the memory alive. In May 1985, a storm of opposition arose against President Reagan s visit to the Bitburg military cemetery in Germany because the ceremony involved paying homage and laying a wreath in a cemetery with graves of SS Soldiers. During the uproar, one German parliamentarian attacked the Jews for their unchristian-like refusal to forget the past. The primary lesson of the special section of the Torah read on Shabbat Zachor is that true reconciliation comes through repentance and remembrance. Confronting the evils of the past is the most powerful generator of moral cleansing and fundamental reconciliation. Repentance is the key to overcoming the evils of the past because when people recognize injustice they can correct the wrongdoing and the conditions that lead to it. In the 20th century, for example, repentance liberated many Christians from past stereotyping and hatred of Jews, thus beginning to transform Christianity into a gospel of love, which it seeks to be. Our experience has taught us that remembrance is the key to preventing recurrence. Goaded by the memory of the failures of the 1930s, the indifference toward Jewish refugees, the American government in 1979 organized a worldwide absorption program for two million boat people. Goaded by memory, America s Jews and Israel responded to the crisis of Soviet Jewry and, belatedly, of Ethiopian Jewry. So this Purim, let us remember and to pledge to call out the Amaleks among us and to do what we can to fight against them. Rabbi Jordan Goldson

Michael Davis loves swimming, guitar, reading and spending time with his brothers, aunts, uncles, grandparents and cousins. My mitzvah project is to raise money for Thrive Academy in Baton Rouge. Thrive Academy is a free college prep charter boarding school for grades six through twelve. It serves at-risk youth from East Baton Rouge Parish. The mission is to empower students from underserved Baton Rouge communities and prepare them academically and personally for success in college and beyond. Specifically, I am raising money so that a group of students from Thrive can participate in the Young Band Nation program at Baton Rouge Music Studio. I have been playing the guitar for three years and music has been very important to me in those three years. I am currently in a program called Young Band Nation where you sign up and get put in a band. I have been in my band (called Biscuits & Gravy) for a year and a half. In that program, you go practice with that band once a week and perform at local venues. We have played at fairs, restaurants, at a Martin Luther King Day celebration and even at Rock & Bowl in New Orleans. I think that helping the students from Thrive learn music could also help better their lives. Music is very special to me and I think that the kids from Thrive could really enjoy it too. We ate foods of the seven species and got our hands dirty with planting. Every child started their own Havdalah garden by planting seeds of lavender, coriander, and mint. While cinnamon and clove are common in the spice box, any sweet smelling spices can be used. Once these fragrant plants grow, they can be used each Saturday night as a reminder of the sweet blessings ahead. This year, our 6 th graders have embarked on a culinary adventure, learning about Jewish history, holidays, and traditions through cooking. Some of their creations have included carrot fritters for Chanukah, challah for Shabbat, and 7-species muffins for Tu B Shevat.

Community Page 20 February has been a busy month for Hadassah Baton Rouge. A large contingent of Hadassah women traveled to Birmingham early in the month for the Region s Mid- Winter Board Meeting. Marla Kameny, Susan Smolinsky, De Anna Ernst, Sarah Schwartz and Co-Presidents Ruth Katzen and Marilyn Martell enjoyed a stimulating weekend with a variety of inspirational guest speakers. We got to hear, first hand, all of the exciting things that are continuing to happen at Hadassah Executive Director/CEO, Janice Weinman. She gave us all the news, good and not so good, but still managed to leave us feeling that Hadassah is definitely on a continued track of success. Next, our local chapter sponsored a Tu B Shevat Seder. The lovely Hilltop Arboretum was a splendid setting for this special event. This year we combined our Seder with a heart healthy discussion about nutrition and the importance of what we eat. Almost forty men, women and children of all ages gathered to eat and learn. Joy Feldman, New Orleans Hadassah Woman of the Year, attorney turned nutritionist, left us with an important message about how we can empower and heal ourselves through the food choices we make. Her witty and charming style entranced us. Our own Ellen Bander, Baton Rouge Hadassah Past President, informed us regarding the wonders of fruit. Ellen has retired as a school librarian and has now embraced her new role as a nutritionist and health counselor. She had many wonderful suggestions that we can incorporate easily into our daily diets. The program was capped off with the Seder, written by Barbara Dibartolo of Lake Charles and lead by Linda Weinstein, Baton Rouge. Linda coordinated the food and all other elements of the Seder and it was a great learning experience and taste sensation. We could see how powerful and thoughtful our Rabbis were in creating this Seder experience that incorporates all the right things to eat. Kudos and bravos to everyone who worked so hard to make this a most memorable event. On February 26, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. we will close out this fabulous month with a book review of the book All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. The grant is given to first-time campers in grades 1 to 9, in the Jewish communities of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida panhandle, for their first summer at a non-profit Jewish sleep away camp.
