A place for faith and fellowship with family and friends. Rev. Mike Winters Pastor Ben Harding Music Director Dr. Ray Jones, Jr. Pastor Emeritus WISE BAPTIST NEWS Dear church family and friends, A PUBLICATION FOR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF WISE BAPTIST CHURCH A theme for 2018 is outreach. Outreach is reaching out to unchurched people who might attend our church. Missions is, normally, sharing God s love to those who are unlikely to attend our church. We need outreach and missions. However, we will have an extra focus on outreach this year. Outreach can be built into every church event. Outreach is more than inviting someone to attend a church service or event. We can also invite unchurched folks to help carry out an event. Worship services Bible studies Service projects Night in Bethlehem Vacation Bible School Brown Bag Ministry Operation Christmas Child Fellowship activities (such as a Sunday School class going to supper) Many other examples Therefore, outreach is inviting people to attend and/or help carry out a church event or project. This allows us to build relationships. It is those relationships that form a bridge for the unchurched to attend, become involved and invested in the life of the church. Outreach is a priority to our Lord. It is evident in His Great Commission. The Bible records Jesus giving the Great Commission five times. Acts 1:8 expresses it this way you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth. My challenge to the Wise Baptist Church family is to pray for God to give you a list of five unchurched people for whom you can pray and then reach out (outreach). I look forward to seeing what God will do through us! Love, Pastor Mike How to Join Wise Baptist Church: Express one of the following to the Pastor during the closing hymn: Transfer of Letter Transfer membership to Wise Baptist Church Baptism Desire to express faith in Christ through baptism Statement of Faith Baptized believer not on a membership roll Watch Care Desire to be connected to our Church family without official membership January 9, 2018 Important Dates Leadership Team Meeting January 11, 6pm Children s Ministry Team January 12 Church Directory Meeting January 14, 12 pm Martin Luther King, Jr. Meal January 15, 5:30pm Laurels Ministry January 18, 1:30pm Church-Wide Birthday Party January 28, 12pm Senior Adult Valentine Banquet February 17, 5pm Inside Announcements Pages 2-3 BDays/Anniv. Announcements WINTER BIBLE STUDY! Wednesdays, Jan. 3 - Feb. 7, 6:45pm First Peter: Living as Strangers in a Secular World Sometimes, we expect more support for our Christian faith from our government and culture. If so, we will be constantly disappointed, or even angry. This attitude can cause us to get stuck in our faith journey. On the other hand, resistance to our faith can cause us to rely on God even more. After all, God is bigger than anyone or anything. The Book of I Peter speaks directly to these issues. Join me & others as we explore how our faith can thrive despite resistance from the world in which we live. ~ Blessings, Pastor Mike Happy Birthday to Everyone! 3rd Annual Church-Wide Birthday Party! Whether your bereavement experience is recent or not so recent, you will find encouragement, comfort & help in being around others who understand what you are feeling. You will learn how to recognize the symptoms of being stuck in grief, & that you do not need to live in bondage to certain emotions. You will learn valuable information about facing your new normal in life & renewing your hope for the future. MUSIC * Youth * Children News Thank you to Donna Hutchinson for leading the choir on Sunday morning due to Ben being ill. The choir adapted beautifully to singing in the fellowship hall. The special music that the choir sang, The Heart of Worship (written by Matt Redman) has an interesting story behind it The song dates back to the late 1990 s when Redman s church in Watford, England was struggling to find meaning in its worship through song. Redman describes it this way: There was a dynamic missing, so the pastor did a pretty brave thing...he decided to get rid of the sound system and band for a season, and we gathered together with just our voices. His point was that we d lost our way in worship, and the way to get back to the heart would be to strip everything away. The pastor asked the church family, When you come through the doors on a Sunday, what are you bringing as your offering to God? Redman shares that after an embarrassing silence, eventually people broke into a cappella songs and heartfelt prayers, encountering God in a fresh way...before long, we reintroduced the musicians and sound system, as we d gained a new perspective that worship is all about Jesus, and He commands a response in the depths of our souls no matter what the circumstance and setting. The Heart of Worship simply describes what occurred.
