1 P1 CONFIRMATION PROGRAM Meeting #3 Scripture Goal of Session: The goal of this session is to look at scripture as a revelation of life of Jesus and His community of faithful then and now. 2 Small Group Lesson: Prayers of Petitions/Intentions WRITE TODAY S DATE ON PAGE 1 OF THE BOOK OF PETITIONS WRITE YOUR PETITION ON THE PAGE TO GIVE AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT IS EXPECTED YOU CAN TAKE ATTENDANCE AS THE BOOK IS PASSED Show the candidates the Book of Petitions created for your small group o Explain that at each meeting your group will be writing their petitions o Prayers of petition are the type of prayer we are most familiar with. In them, we ask God for things we need primarily spiritual needs, but physical ones as well. Our prayers of petition should always include a statement of our willingness to accept God's will, whether He directly answers our prayer or not. The Our Father is a good example of a prayer of petition, and the line "Thy will be done" shows that, in the end, we acknowledge that God's plans for us are more important than what we desire. o Explain that this book and the book of all other small groups will be offered as gifts during the Youth Mass Pass the book around inviting the candidates to enter any prayers they have for the week YOUCAT: What does the Church say about the Bible? PLAN ON SPENDING 20 MINUTES ON THIS ACTIVITY BEFORE THE MEETING, READ YOUCAT 12-19 DECIDE HOW YOU WILL BREAK UP THE GROUP INTO GROUPS OF 2 or 3 FOR ACTIVITY Break your group into groups of 2 or 3 candidates each Hand out the YOUCAT books to the candidates Explain; Revelation is God making himself and his divine plan known to the human race through words and deeds in human history. The Holy Spirit inspired the authors of the Bible to create the written documents that explain God s plan. The YOUCAT paragraphs explain the church s teachings. Hand out the booklets. Ask the group to read paragraphs 12-19 in YOUCAT and then work in their mini groups to answer the questions found on page one of the booklets. When all are completed go over the answers with the entire group After the questions invite the candidates to go up to the whiteboard and write one thing they:

3 o Didn t know before tonight OR o A quote or phrase that stood out to them Go over what was written on the white board pointing out any similarities in thought and inviting the candidates to share why they make the selections they did. Bible Bookshelf BEFORE THE MEETING, The Catholic Faith Handbook for Youth Read Chapter 2 entitled Knowing God Reason and Revelations. REVIEW THE BIBLE BOOKSHELF TEMPLATE DECIDE HOW YOU WILL BREAK UP THE GROUP INTO 5 GROUPS FOR ACTIVITY Explain: The Bible is a large collection of smaller writings, called books and that the goal of this activity is to create a bookshelf of all the books in Bible. Handout an envelope to each group. Have each group work together, using their Bibles to put their books in the same order as the Bible. Once completed they can add the books to the bookshelf. Matthew 5.13-16 BEFORE THE MEETING, READ THE LECTIONARY GUIDE FOR MATTHEW 5.13-16 FIND GALILEE AND CAPERNAUM AND THE SEA OF GALILEE ON THE MAP IN THE BOOKLET Hand out the Bibles and ask the candidates to open their Bibles to Matthew 5.13-16 Explain this is the Gospel reading for February 9, 2014, the 5 th Sunday in Ordinary Read or ask a candidate to read the citation. Explain: in Matthew 5.13-16 this event takes place in the beginning of Jesus public ministry. Tonight we are starting to look at the life and ministry of Jesus in an orderly way by following his path in ministry. Point out page 4 of the booklet and go over the steps applying the Parr Method to tonight s reading. Now for something completely different! Backward Clumps
