Trinity Tidings Page Trinity Tidings TRINITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH October, 2018 Stewardship 2018: Live Generously For you know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. 2 Corinthians 8:9 Jesus said: There is more happiness in giving than receiving. I believe that! Generosity brings happiness. According to Rick Warren, in the Bible, the word believe, believer, or believing is used 272 times; the word prayer, pray, praying is used 371; the word love, loves, loving is used 371 times; but the word give, gives or giving is used 2157 times. Giving is the essence of Christian living, and Jesus was the ultimate giver. 'Give and it will be given to you for with the measure you use it will be measured back to you'. What do you get back? Here are a few benefits of becoming a generous giver. 1. Giving Makes Me More Like God. God is a giver. 'God so loved the world He gave'. Everything we have is a gift from God. You can give without loving but you cannot love without giving. Learn to become a giver. 2. Giving Draws Me Close to God. Where your treasure is your heart will be also. Where is your heart today? Family, career, house, business, hobbies, sports, church? What your treasure reveals is where your heart is. My giving to God it draws me closer to Him. God is much more interested in raising disciples than he is in raising dollars. 3. Giving is Victory Over Materialism. You can t buy happiness, though we try. One quip said, You just don t know where to shop! It s true that you make a living by what you get, you make a life by what you give. Giving breaks the circle of materialism. We are to put our hope in God, not in things. 4. Giving Strengthens My Faith in God. In Malachi 3:10 God says, 'Test me in this: bring your full tithe into the warehouse and see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing!' Over and over, God has provided for my family and me, so I give to express my thanks to God. It is said that with every promise in the Bible there is a premise that God is trustworthy and good! Proverbs 3:5: 'Trust in the Lord with all your heart'. 5. Giving is an Investment for Eternity. You can't take it with you, but you can send it on ahead by investing in people. Jesus said, 'store up treasure in heaven.' How do you do that? Our theme verse for Stewardship 2018, I Timothy 6:18, tells us: 'Command them, to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life'. 6. Giving Blesses Me In Return. I get more out of it than I give. A generous man will himself be blessed. (Proverbs 22:9). What you give in life you will so often get back. If you give out criticism, what do you get back, criticism? If we give encouragement what do we get back, encouragement. What we sow, we reap. 7. Giving Makes Me Happy. Jesus said there is more happiness in giving that receiving. As I got older, I learned the truth that the happiest people in life are givers. Jesus said lose your life to find it, give it away. Miserable comes from the root word miser, hoarding makes you miserable. The person who is generous in his/her lifestyle is happy. Thank you for your generous support and participation in the Trinity s ministries and missions!

Page 3 Trinity Tidings OUR MINISTRY PLATFORM: Included below is the statement created by our Renovation Team to express the culture, community, core values, and 3-year ministry goals to shape our ministry at Trinity. The recent visioning workshop led by Ministry Architects church consultants created draft core values and over thirty goals, which were narrowed to a short list, and the Reno Team was then tasked to further develop those values, goals, and wishes into a comprehensive statement. Now adopted by the Session, we share this statement hoping that you share our sense of the depth and love at Trinity. Other ideas and sub-goals from the workshop are being shared with Session Teams may spark additional new ministry plans, and we look forward to more people stepping up in the next three years to make our dreams reality for God s work in and through Trinity. Next up is to draft action plans and timelines to implement tangible steps toward fulfilling these goals and values. - The Renovation Team TRINITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, PENSACOLA, FL OUR MINISTRY PLATFORM OUR VISION We are a community of faith seeking and sharing the light of Christ in service to the world. OUR MISSION We exist to make disciples of Jesus Christ, to meet human needs, and to glorify God. OUR BELIEFS ABOUT OUR MINISTRIES In carrying out the ministry to which God calls us, we have certain core beliefs. We believe All people need a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Every person is loved and valued by God and so must be loved and valued by us. We are called to reach people with God s love, to grow people as disciples, and to send them out equipped to serve God and others. Every believer has been given one or more spiritual gifts by God to be used for the good of the Church and the world. Every believer needs to be connected to a group of believers for education, nurture, fellowship, care, and accountability. We seek to be Spirit-filled instruments of God in our worship, service, witness, fellowship, and discipleship. OUR CORE VALUES Core values are spiritual underpinnings that inspire us to action. These core values state what is important to us in our relationships and ministries. In all things, whether success or failure, we trust the Father s love, the grace of Jesus Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit. SCRIPTURES At Trinity, we seek to place ourselves under the authority of God s Holy Word. We are to help one another understand Scripture and apply it in our lives. We commit ourselves to teaching you the whole of Scripture and upholding its unique, authoritative place in the life of the church and of individuals. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. - 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Page 4 Trinity Tidings COMMUNITY At Trinity, we seek to be a community that extends beyond Sunday mornings. We are broken people, living in a fragmented culture, who need guidance, encouragement, and help in all areas of life. As such, we extend you hospitality, love, and acceptance, and welcome you into our church and into our lives. We seek to be a community that is immersed in the gospel of Jesus Christ, pursues the honor and glory of God, and sacrifices for the good of one another. So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us. 1 Thessalonians 2:8 SERVICE At Trinity, we desire to love and serve God, our neighbors, city, and world. We are all equipped by the Holy Spirit with gifts to glorify God and work for the betterment of our world. We seek to go beyond our abilities and imaginations and prioritize others before ourselves. Let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we did not give up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith. Galatians 6:9-10 WORSHIP At Trinity, we seek to worship God in ways that magnify God s glory and increase our affections for Jesus Christ. We praise God for who God is, thank God for what God has done, and prepare ourselves to live as disciples of Jesus Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit. We share a way of life together that sees everything we do as an opportunity to worship and praise God. Love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. Matthew 22:36 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God s mercy, to offer yourselves as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God this is your true and proper worship. Romans 12:1 DISCIPLESHIP At Trinity, we seek to make, grow, and send disciples of Jesus Christ. Christ calls us to pursue this work and we believe that everything we do ought to increase our obedience and love for Jesus. We seek to fulfill this mission and will give of ourselves to help one another to become mature disciples, equipped to do God s work and to be an influence for God wherever we go. Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:19-20 GENEROSITY At Trinity, we strive to live and serve in ways that acknowledges God s gifting of all things. We are called to use the diversity of our gifts to prosper and enrich God s kingdom. We seek to be responsible and humble stewards, believing that it is more blessed to give than to receive. The earth is the Lord s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it. Psalm 24:1 COMPASSION At Trinity, we seek to be a place where everyone is known, understood, valued and loved. We live in a broken world that diminishes human dignity and leaves people isolated and vulnerable. We seek to share, through word and deed, the compassion and love of Jesus Christ with one another and to carry that compassion into our world. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:24-25

OUR SHARED CALLING Page 5 Trinity Tidings Trinity Presbyterian Church exists to express love to God and others (the Great Commandment, Mark 12:29-31) and to make disciples (the Great Commission, Matthew 28:19-20). Page 6 Trinity Tidings Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your loving prayers for my friend, Colin Campbell. His family is part of my church family in my hometown of Three Rivers, Michigan. He is a living miracle, and your prayers have helped sustain him, his family, and me during this horrific time of terrible tragedy. To God be the glory. Colin is doing great. Wendy Davies Dear Trinity family, Thank you for the prayers, calls, and visits for my father, Al Pulford, during his most recent health issues. I am glad to say that his broken leg is mending well and he is recovering nicely from his recent gall bladder surgery. He greatly enjoys the prayer cards and looks forward to being back in church in the near future. Your kindness and compassion is appreciated. God Bless you all, Kevin Pulford Dear Trinity Friends, Al wrote one note for me to Hugh before I felt like writing. Now I want to tell you how much your prayer card meant to me. To look over the long list meant so much and brought back many memories. Thank all of you for your thoughts and prayers these last 6 weeks. God, through wonderful doctors and other medical staff, performed a miracle on this girl. It is wonderful to be alive and doing well. God bless all of you as you pray for others. Helen H. Reese SENIOR AGING EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM: October 9, What s In Your Medicine Cabinet? Presenter Suzanne Kelly, Pharmacist-Covenant Care. Join us at 6 pm in Room D! To the Wonderful Prayer Group at Trinity Church: Dear Friends, You all have been wonderful partners in prayer with me and Helen for 3 weeks now as we have watched Helen s miraculous recovery from her strokes on August 4. The remarkable care which she received from the doctors and nurses at the Gulf Breeze Hospital together with the love and prayer of folks like you have certainly made a difference in her healing. Jack Lurton came to see her the day after the stroke, and brought his genuine concern and embracing love to our family in a way we could never forget. Many of the names on your prayer cards are special friends to me and Helen, so many good memories surface as we go over the list. Our affection for Trinity church, for Hugh, for Frank and Rebekah, and lots of others, knows no bounds. You have added significantly to the solidarity of that respect and gratitude which we have for your church family, and we mean that more than you could ever know. Helen is in therapy now at home, and her therapist is amazed at how strong she is and how easily she does all the tasks for recovering normalcy. Please continue your prayers for us and also know how much we love you all. Devotedly, Helen and Al Reese CVS FLU SHOT CLINIC For your convenience, Alana Stamper, a pharmacist with CVS, will be in Room E from 8:30 am to noon on Sunday, October 21, 2018. Page 9 Trinity Tidings This will be Trinity s 10 th year participating in Operation Christmas Child shoe box service project. With your help last year, Escambia County and Santa Rosa churches raised 16,452 boxes. But it is much more than just a box of gifts for children. These small shoe boxes give children a much bigger gift: HOPE. When each child receives a box they are given a storybook, in their own language, which shares the message of salvation. Samaritans Purse also organizes a 12 week discipleship program to teach the Gospel in shoebox delivery towns. Many times these children teach their families about the Gospel through this program and even revitalize churches. We have recently bought the same book they receive, for our children to view. The impact of boxes for 10-14 year old boys can be especially important, in some countries. That is the age when terrorist organizations start to recruit young men to join their cause. Through these boxes, these teenage boys receive hope that there is a God that loves them and that they have a purpose in His kingdom. Because of this program it is also teaching people from age 2 to 82 how to have a servant s heart. Through the 10 years of doing this service project it has given our congregation more of a servant s heart. Our children see that they have the gift of time, hope and love to offer others around the globe. They know, at a young age, that their service to others has an impact that is bigger than a box. Update on building project with Ministry Architects: As with any remodel or new build, things go along smoothly and we are lulled into optimism and confidence that all is well. Then, there is a snag the interpretation of the plans isn t viewed quite the same by the builders and the owners. So it is necessary to review where both parties want and need to be; making necessary adjustments and then continuing together toward the goal of the project. After the input from all who attended the Summit in August where values and goals were identified (thank you to everyone who invested in this process), the RENO team felt that the results compiled by MA needed clarification and expansion to clearly state who Trinity is and where we want to go. So the team has been meeting weekly to do just that. I believe our blueprint of core values and goals now express what was shared at the Summit and the heart of Trinity. They will be shared with the Session for approval soon. We will be meeting with MA via teleconference on Oct. 1 st and expect their assistance in moving forward on implementing the next phase of our renovation. To all parents, families and Youth/Children volunteers SAVE THIS DATE: November 6, 7, and 8.MA will be here for the Youth/Children s Visioning Summit and your input is needed. Please continue to pray for the RENO team and the Ministry Architects all that we do is to bring glory to God through our service and love for one another.
