Volume 4-2018 Join us for Sunday School 9:45 am Worship Service 11:00 am Sandwich Making for H.O.P.E. (Helping Our People Eat) Several members of the Church have been meeting at the Church at 8:30 a.m. the first and last Sundays in each month for over a year now to put together 100 sandwiches and then putting them in bags with a healthy dessert (of which the Baking Ministry and other members assists with), and a piece of fruit or yogurt. The sandwich coolers are then delivered by several members to a designated pick up. This is a ministry started by Ben and Marty Tennille three years ago. One component of the ministry is feeding about 1,200 hungry local children on Sunday so that they can better learn on Monday. Our group at Burkhead has developed into a beautiful fellowship helping those in need. If you would like to assist us in this ministry at Burkhead, please let Beth Dixon know. Trinity Christian Counseling is seeking full-time (35 hrs) team members to assist with office responsibilities including phone and computer work. The annual WNC Conference will take place June 21-24, 2018. I ask that you join me in praying for our Bishop, all District Superintendents, Laity and Pastors as we prepare and wait for the 2018 WNC Conference. As we look at our world today we still have a lot of drama going on all around us daily. We have to continue to pray. I know God is still the greatest power today and days to come if we will only believe in Him. We must have patience and wait on the Lord. Please remember all sisters and brothers who live in Rockingham County, Danville, VA. and my home town of Greensboro who were struck by the storms two weeks ago. You cannot do enough for God's people who were hit in His communities. Thank for the support given by the Burkhead church families to our sisters and brothers in Greensboro. Looking forward to our church and community discussing the book AMERICA S ORIGINAL SIN - RACISM, WHITE PRIVILEGE AND THE BRIDGE TO A NEW AMERICA by Jim Wallis. All dates and times have been posted for your information. If you have any questions, please feel free to give me a call at church. Please join our discussion and bring a friend. Bereavement Meal Teams God's Helpers For a member of our church who dies, preparing a meal or reception for their family and long-time friends is the last gift of love and respect a church can give to the member. To do this, we need volunteers to serve on Bereavement Teams. If you will serve on a team, please let Beth Dixon know. God could not be in every place With loving hands to help erase The teardrops from each baby's face, And so He thought of mother. He could not send us here alone And leave us to a fate unknown; Without providing for His own, The outstretched arms of mother. God could not watch us night and day And kneel beside our crib to pray, Or kiss our little aches away; And so He sent us mother. And when our childhood days began, He simply could not take command. That's why He placed our tiny hand Securely into mother's. The days of youth slipped quickly by, Life's sun rose higher in the sky. Full grown were we, yet ever nigh To love us still, was mother. And when life's span of years shall end, I know that God will gladly send, To welcome home her child again, That ever-faithful mother. -- George W. Wiseman Under the leadership of The Rev. Kathie Sherrill, former Burkhead pastor, Caring Hands was organized in spring 2006. For the past twelve years, Caring Hands has faithfully served the Burkhead congregation and continues to do so. If you would like to assist our ministry in our continued work, you can make a monetary contribution to Caring Hands, who has a church special account. Outreach Opportunities Gale Sink Hope du Jour--Eat Out for a Good Cause On Tuesday, May 1st, eat out to support Crisis Control Ministry. Choose a participating restaurant at which to eat your breakfast, lunch or dinner. The restaurants will donate a percentage of their profits that day to Crisis Control Ministry. A complete list of participating restaurants can be found at hopedujour.org or look for a sign at the restaurant. Crisis Control provides many services to those in need in our community such as a pharmacy, food pantry, help with rent and utilities, and classes and information. You have to eat so make it count on May 1st! Tornado Relief On Sunday, April 15th, tornadoes hit our neighbors in Greensboro causing much destruction. Three elementary schools were destroyed and those students and teachers lost everything. Other students lost their school supplies when their homes were damaged. One way you can help is to donate school supplies and we will take them to Greensboro. A box is in the narthex where you can bring supplies. Anything a teacher or student could use is appreciated. Please have all items to the church by Sunday, May 13th. Community Women's Bible Study Our next Women's Bible Study will begin on Thursday, May 24, from 9:30-11:30 am. Bring your friends and neighbors and join us as we spend time learning and deepening our faith. Join us on Thursdays as we spend time in God's word. Please join us! There is a sign up sheet on the information table. Please sign up so we will know how many to prepare for. s for Old Town Elementary School For many years we have partnered with other churches to provide a new book for every student at Old Town Elementary to take home at the end of the school year to read over the summer. Homes that have books in them help close the literacy gap but many families don't have extra funds to buy books. You can help. We provide books for each second grader. There are 105 second graders this year. We are accepting donations to purchase books for these students. We will need around $350 dollars to purchase new second grade level books. If you would like to donate, put your donations in the offering plate or get them to the church office with "Old Town s" in the memo line. Thank you for helping the children! National Night Out Community Celebration August 7, 2018 has been designated National Night Out.
