THE CHIMING OF THE HOUR WORSHIP OF GOD IN CHRIST THE ASCENSION OF OUR LORD May 8, 2016 11:00 a.m. THE PRELUDE Praise the Lord (Canzona)... Gabrieli THE LIGHTING OF THE CANDLES We light the two candles on the communion table to remind us of the oneness of Christ with God and the oneness of Christ with humankind. THE OPENING OF THE BIBLE We open the Bible to remind us that God speaks to the people through the Holy Word.. THE CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: You have heard what was written about Jesus in Scripture People: How he would suffer and die and then rise from the dead on the third day; Leader: How the same power that raised Jesus from the dead raised Him to heaven and seated Him at the right hand of God, where he now lives to intercede on our behalf. People: So let us come before God with confidence, through the loving intercession of our risen Lord, Jesus Christ! ** THE HYMN 200 All Hail the Power of Jesus Name... DIADEM ** THE INVOCATION THE WELCOME THE MISSION MOMENT... (Report from OIAM) THE OLD TESTAMENT LESSON... 2 Kings 2:1, 9-15 (NIV) 1 When the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. 9 When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, Tell me, what can I do for you

before I am taken from you? Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit, Elisha replied. 10 You have asked a difficult thing, Elijah said, yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours otherwise, it will not. 11 As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. 12 Elisha saw this and cried out, My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel! And Elisha saw him no more. Then he took hold of his garment and tore it in two. 13 Elisha then picked up Elijah s cloak that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. 14 He took the cloak that had fallen from Elijah and struck the water with it. Where now is the LORD, the God of Elijah? he asked. When he struck the water, it divided to the right and to the left, and he crossed over. 15 The company of the prophets from Jericho, who were watching, said, The spirit of Elijah is resting on Elisha. And they went to meet him and bowed to the ground before him. Leader: This is the Word of the Lord! People: Thanks be to God! THE HYMN 227 Praise Him! Praise Him!... JOYFUL SONG (Stanza 1) (During the singing of this hymn, the children are invited to come forward for the Children s Sermon.) THE CHILDREN S SERMON (Children s Church will not meet today. Acts 1:1-11 (NIV) 1 In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. 3 After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. 4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. 6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel? 7 He said to them: It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power

when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. 9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. 10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11 Men of Galilee, they said, why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven. Leader: This is the Word of the Lord! People: Thanks be to God! TEXTS A Mother s Love.Grace Noll Crowell Something of God is in a Mother s love, Something of His tenderness and care; I never see a mother bent above an ailing child, But I can see God there. And I can hear him in the words she says To little children gathered at her knee: God s own voice speaking through her lips, The words that will bear fruitage for eternity. And I can feel Him in a mother s touch: Across the widening years her shielding hands Will still reach out as if to keep from harm Her little child - how well God understands A mother s heart, so like His own it is! True motherhood has touched his garment s hem For strength and wisdom, and I am quite sure We honor Him the day we honor them. This is the Time to Be Joyful..Pepper Choplin This is the time to be joyful, let us be joyful As we praise the Lord and bless His holy name. Come praise the Lord and bless His holy name! Let us come before the Lord, The One who has sustained our weary souls. For God will not forsake us nor leave us in our struggle. He will raise us up. God will raise us up to empower us to sing a joyful song! This is the time to be joyful, let us be joyful As we praise the Lord and bless His holy name. Come praise the Lord and bless His holy name!
