The Springboard Monthly Newsletter Spring Glen Church, UCC 1825 Whitney Avenue, Hamden CT 06517 September 2015 Rally Day September 13 The Christian Education Committee hopes you can join us on September 13 as we launch another exciting church program year. On this date, we will commission our new Church School teachers and children will start the fall term. Following worship you are invited to join us on the North Lawn for a church-wide picnic. We will supply the sandwiches and beverages. Please bring a salad or dessert to share if you are able. Rally Day is traditionally the day our church family rallies together to celebrate our church and to look ahead to the future year. We encourage you to come even if you haven t visited in a while. We all have stories to share as we reacquaint ourselves with one another following our summer travels. We need you to make our church family complete! Fall Sunday School Registration The first day of Sunday School is on Rally Day, September 13. A letter will be mailed to each church school family with a registration form. Please bring these forms with you on Rally Day. These forms alert teachers to parents special concerns, especially regarding food allergies, and allows us to tailor lessons that fit the interest of specific children. At the bottom of the form, you will see a space to grant or decline permission for the church to publish your child s picture on our social media sites. Please understand that even if the church uses your child s photograph, their name will never be published. See you on Rally Day! Pew Pals Don t be surprised if you find a colorful stuffed animal in your pew beginning on Rally Day! We are launching a Pew Pal program. Each pew will have a stuffed animal that a person (not only children) can hold during worship. The stuffed animal will have a tag that reads, I am a Pew Pal. I will keep you company while we worship. I can stay here, or you may take me home. If you do, please love me the way God loves you! Your child is welcome to take the pal home. You may bring it back in the future or keep it. If your child mouths the pal or it gets soiled so it needs a bath, please place it in the basket in the Narthex. Each week, the pals will be cleaned and restocked as necessary. It is our hope that these pals may comfort some of us during worship and provide a welcoming gesture to families with small children. The Cheshire Congregational Church has successfully run this program at its church. They have graciously donated some Pew Pals to us as we launch our program. If you have small stuffed animals you would like to donate, please place them in the basket in the Narthex. We thank Barbara Hobbs for coordinating this effort. Summer Sunday School Thanks to all the teachers who volunteered over the summer months to teach Summer Sunday School. The children learned about preserving one of God s ultimate creations, the planet Earth. Using the curriculum, What s So Amazing about Polar Bears, children learned about the traits of specific animals, created clay animals and wrote cards for our shut-ins among other activities. Thanks to: Ellen Schowalter, Cynthia Licata, Andri Smith, Jennifer Heath, Peter Lamothe, Debra and Emma Tangarone, Laurel, Katie and Rachel Laster, Doug Hawthorne, Curt Johnson, Kathy and Larry Lee, and Debbie Carpenter. Staff Transition I deeply regret to announce that I will be resigning as Christian Education Coordinator as of January 1, 2016. My husband s company is leaving Connecticut and he has been transferred to central New Jersey. My family will be moving from Hamden in the summer of 2016. Even though I am leaving my staff position as of January, my family will continue to worship at Spring Glen until next summer. We certainly did not ask for this change. It is an unexpected twist on our journey that we must embrace and pursue. I am reminded of a personal epiphany I had many years ago. I was looking at a Christmas tree and wishing that someone whom I really missed could spend Christmas with me. As my eyes teared up, I noticed that the colorful lights looked even bigger and brighter and I realized that God s light would shine even brighter on me in times of trial and uncertainty. Future unknowns are scary, but we need to focus on faith and not fear. The Spring Glen CE Program is strong and I know its future will not be impacted negatively by a leadership transition. In the meantime, I look forward to a busy fall Sunday School season. With gratitude, 2 Laurie Bleickardt

Upcoming Book Discussion, October 15, 7 pm Some 55 individuals attended the Tree of Life Educational Fund-sponsored visit with Palestinians Shurouq Isam Alatrach and Hebe Elias Bannoura at Spring Glen on June 17, 2015. The event drew attendees from the Jewish Voice for Peace, the Church of the Redeemer, the Friends Meetinghouse, the First Presbyterian Church, and the Unitarian Society, among others. The women shared moving first-hand accounts concerning the challenges they and their fellow Palestinians face. In an effort to continue learning about life in the Middle East today, Spring Glen s book group will discuss Sandy Tolan s The Lemon Tree on October 15, 2015. In 1967, Bashir Al-Khayri, a Palestinian twenty-five-year-old, journeyed to Israel, with the goal of seeing the beloved old stone house, with the lemon tree behind it, that he and his family had fled nineteen years earlier. To his surprise, when he found the house he was greeted by Dalia Ashkenazi Landau, a nineteen-year-old Israeli college student, whose family fled Europe for Israel following the Holocaust. On the stoop of their shared home, Dalia and Bashir began a rare friendship, forged in the aftermath of war and tested over the next thirty-five years in ways that neither could imagine on that summer day in 1967. Based on extensive research, and springing from his enormously resonant documentary that aired on NPR's Fresh Air in 1998, Sandy Tolan brings the Israeli-Palestinian conflict down to its most human level, suggesting that even amid the bleakest political realities there exist stories of hope and reconciliation. Join Debra Tangarone for a discussion of The Lemon Tree in the Fellowship Room on October 15 from 7:00-8:30 pm. If you would like to order a copy of the book ($13, paperback), contact Debra at friend7434@yahoo.com by September 10. New Toddler Room Ministry Team! The CE Committee extends its sincere thanks to all those that agreed to serve on the newly formed Toddler Room Ministry Team: Jasmine Brownell, Laura Callinan, Beverly Harrison, Nick Healy, Peter Lamothe, Larry Lee, Michele O Connell, Ellen Schowalter, Eric Summerer, Debra Tangarone, Emma Tangarone, Lindsay Triplett and Bethany Appleby (substitute). Members of the team will serve alongside Brianna Etter-Speaker, our paid Toddler Room teacher, who leads an age-appropriate Sunday School lesson each week. Volunteers will serve in the Toddler Room approximately four times per year. Our toddlers, and parents of toddlers, thank you! Pre-Worship Child Care Now Available Thanks to a generous donation from the Music Committee, CE is now able to offer child care beginning at 9:00 am Sunday mornings. This will enable parents of young children to participate in choir or the Sunday morning Bible study. Why not nurture yourself by joining friends in song or study while your children are in the good hands of our Toddler Room teacher? Contact Laurie Bleickardt with any questions. Church Directory A directory of church members is available online on the church website. www.springglenchurch.org Printed copies can be made at the church office by request. 3

Bible Studies Young Adult Bible Study Resumes September 13 Are you a young adult (20's or 30s) looking for a place to fit in at Spring Glen Church? We would like to invite you to a BYOB event (bring your own Bible) that meets every other Sunday evening in the nursery, starting on September 13th. Each meeting starts at 5:30 with a half hour of fellowship with dinner provided. Then child care is provided from 6:00-7:00, where the adults discuss a chapter of the Bible; this fall we will be looking at 1 Timothy. It is a relaxed, open and accepting conversation where all ideas are welcome. We hope you will join us as we are always eager to expand our group and to hear new points of view! If you have any questions, feel free to contact Braxton Carrigan (braxton.carrigan@gmail.com) or Kathy Lee (k.kew.lee@gmail.com). Sunday Morning Bible Study Resumes September 20 At this busy back-to-school time of year, it can sometimes feel like life is just a series of things to get done before you collapse, exhausted into bed at night. Sure you re fulfilling your responsibilities as parent, community member, church member, son, or daughter. But it s easy to lose touch with the Spirit that inspires your sense of responsibility the Spirit that makes duty not just an obligation you can t get out of, but a source of meaning and purpose. And that s part of what church is for... to get you back in touch with the Holy Spirit, the Spirit that helps you do what you need to do, and not exhaust yourself doing it! To help you re-charge your batteries at church, we are resuming our Sunday morning Bible Study on September 20, 2015. The group meets Sunday mornings before worship, 9:00-9:45 am in the Fellowship Room. Each week we look at the text to be used in worship that day. There is no need to read in advance and you re welcome to drop in when you can. Come join us for a cup of coffee and some lively discussion! Child care is provided. Contact Debra Tangarone with any questions. Monday Afternoon Bible Study Resumes September 21 Our Monday Bible Study will began again for the program year on Monday, September 21st at 1 pm. All are welcome to join us for this time to study Scripture and its impact on our daily living. Beginning this fall, we're planning to spend a few weeks exploring the parables of Jesus. The parables of Jesus are timeless teaching stories about the wonder of God and God's call to us. First told in the first century to a rural, simple group of people in the lands where Jesus taught, they continue to teach and shape our lives today All are welcome to be part of this fellowship group which meets on Monday afternoons. 4

Christian Action Committee Outreach Covenant with The Town of Hamden: A New Direction We are excited about a new outreach opportunity that will help localize even more of our outreach efforts with the Town of Hamden. As we were re-committing to the statewide nonprofit organization Covenant to Care for Children, we especially asked if our efforts could be targeted for our local Hamden North Haven area. As a result of the efforts of Shonya Harrison from Covenant to Care for Children, Spring Glen Church and The Town of Hamden Youth Services, we now have a 2 year covenant for a three way relationship allowing us to work directly with the Youth Services staff so that our various gifts can benefit the Hamden children in special need of support. We look forward to working with them throughout our year to help ensure that Hamden children and families will be the recipients of backpacks and school supplies, Thanksgiving baskets, holiday gifts and a spring initiative still being re-designed. Carolyn Cary, Chair Christian Action Committee Backpack Dedication was Sunday August 16 Even in the midst of a busy summer, Spring Glen folks were able to find the time and the funding to provide children in need with important resources to help them get off to a good start for this school year. For all of you who delivered backpacks filled with supplies along with those of you who donated over $265 in funding, we say thank you! With much gratitude, Bethany Appleby and Sue Spight, Co-Chairs: Backpack Project Christian Action Committee Hamden Youth Services Outreach Counselor Beth Chiarillo picking up backpacks from Carolyn Cary Christian Action Chair Backpacks and School Supplies Collection: A Great Success As our initial project working with The Town, many of you helped make our school supplies collection a big success. Together we were able to donate 25 children s backpacks filled with age appropriate supplies along with extra supplies for their supply closet to help meet the ongoing needs of those children whose families depend on the Hamden Youth Services and their day care program. In addition, we were able to honor our covenant with Christian Community Action (CCA) by also donating backpacks and school supplies to the family who resides in the CCA apartment that Spring Glen Church continues to support. 5

Meals and Wheels Meals and Wheels is a committee that provides meals and rides to members. In September we will provide meals to families with new babies and surgeries. One can be on the volunteer list for either one or the other service or both. Questions? Call Ellen Schowalter 203-248-7434 or email ellen.schowalter@gmail.com. Farmers Market Support Our Spring Glen Farmer s Market Come join us every Tuesday from 2-6 pm for our farmer's market. The market will run from June 30 October 13. Fresh fruits and vegetables lead the show along with vendors selling flowers, honey, syrup, pickles and relishes. And new this year: Fresh baked treats for your canine friends. And to satisfy your sweet and savory cravings: Two food trucks: Sugar (cupcake truck) and Spuds Your Way (baked potato truck). Please join us! Thank you, Amelia Iuliano Farmer s Market Coordinator Looking for an Assistant Farmer s Market Coordinator Do you have a few hours on a Tuesday afternoon to be the Spring Glen Church Community Ambassador to assist Amelia with extending Spring Glen Church hospitality? We are looking for 1-2 folks who may be available to just be present from 2-6 at an easy to set up hospitality table. If we have more than one who would like to help we could do two shifts. The biggest need is for the few occasions when Amelia is not able to be present so we just need a back up or two. The responsibilities are very few other than being a welcoming presence on behalf of the church and to answer a question or two from any of our Farmers Market guests (restroom locations, what is Spring Glen Church all about, etc.) along with providing any available brochures on the market and the church. This is an important church ministry and wonderful outreach opportunity to extend our friendship into the community. Please contact Carolyn Cary @ chcary1@cox.net or 203 272-9626 if you have an interest in helping. Spring Glen Needlework Group Come one, come all. All knitters, embroiderers, crocheters whatever your needlework passion (as long as it is portable!), join us for fun and fellowship. The first meeting of the Spring Glen Church needlework group will be Monday, September 14th at the home of Jean Davis. We meet at 7:30 pm and conclude our meetings at 9:00 pm. All are welcome! For more information, please contact Diane Hirsch @ 203.288.2956 or j.hirsch@snet.net 6

If you have any questions, please contact Amanda Cecala at AmandaGCecala@gmail.com. " Contemplative Prayer Introductory Meeting Sunday, September 27 In its basic and most fundamental expression, Contemplative Prayer is a loving attentiveness to God. Richard Foster If you would like to learn to pray in ways that take us outside our usual verbal prayers, where we do much if not all the talking, then this program may be of interest to you. And if you have some basic questions about prayer, find it hard to pray or never can find the time, this course may be helpful to you. We will practice different ways to pray and examine what stands in the way of deepening our prayer and relationship with God. We will meet after worship on September 27 for an introduction to the program and to determine a regular meeting time. If you are simply curious, not sure if this is for you, please feel free to come to the first session. It is expected that we will meet at a regular intervals to practice together and to learn about this approach to prayer. In our regular group meetings, we will spend some time in learning practices such as Breath, centering and healing prayer. These different methods use silence in various ways, in connection with scripture or simple words or short phrases. Time: 11:30 a.m. Place: Fellowship Room Please RSVP to Pastor Clare by email clarerobert@earthlink.net 7

(Children can be great cake bakers, casserole mixers, and servers.) Our next opportunity to serve will be Thursday, September 24. JUNE/JULY FINANCIAL REPORT As is typically the case, the summer months are a time when revenue drops and expenditures exceed income. However, this year the church entered the summer with a lower positive balance than in recent prior years and, therefore, the year to date (through July) operating fund has a negative balance of just over $11,500. Through July expenditures were, in fact, only around $1,000 more than at the same time last year. having passed), the year-to-date figure includes several major items that are received at the beginning of the year, such as prior year balance and pledges paid in advance. This emphasizes the importance of members fulfilling their individual pledge commitments because that is the most significant income category over which we collectively have control.
