Page Three St. Francis of Assisi Parish May 06, 2018 Living Holiness Today; Based on Pope Francis s Recent Apostolic Exhortation Creator of every human being, of every human life, You call us to a live a life of holiness, A life for the times in which we live, Brimming with risks, challenges, and opportunities. You remind us that we are never completely ourselves Unless we are part of a community And that holiness is found in our next-door neighbors, In those living among us those who reflect you. May we come to see the great cloud of witnesses among us: The elderly and the young, The migrant and the refugee, The asylum seeker and the immigrant, The hungry and the poor, The prisoner and the person confined to institutions, The trafficked and the tortured, The ethnic minority groups and the LGBTQ community, The feminist and the visionary, The educator and the learner, The journalist and the poet, The community activist and the policy maker, The environmentalist and the economist, The artist and the musician, And the grassroots organizer and the conscientious objector. Through their witness, may we learn to be poor of heart; To react with meekness and humility; To mourn with, and wipe the tears of, the anguished; To hunger for righteous justice; To act with kindness and mercy; To keep our hearts free of hatred and of all that tarnishes love; To be artisans of peace and nonviolence; And to walk the path of the Gospel, even if it requires being persecuted and humiliated. Creator of every human being, of every human life, Unsettle us, challenge us, and demand authentic transformation In the way we live a life of holiness rooted in Gospel justice. Amen. Dianna Ortiz, O.S.U. Ascension Mass Schedule Vigil Wednesday, May 9th 7:00 p.m. Ascension Thursday, May 10th 12:00 p.m. Liturgies will be held in Church Gospel Call to Love In today s gospel, Jesus presents the commandment to love one another a love that is like God s love. As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. We are called to be like God the God who has a passion for love and justice, the God who is concerned for all of creation, the God who has a special concern for the poor. Catholic Social Teaching reminds us that Christian love is a love that goes beyond an affection for family and friends a love that goes beyond love or sexual passion a love that is more than a nice sentiment a love that is concerned in a very concrete way with people a love that involves respect for and learning from other people who might be different than ourselves a love that is concerned with justice and peace for all God s people a love that longs to create a world community of justice for all. In the first reading Peter comes to see that the Spirit is found in all people. In truth, I see that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him. The love that Jesus commands leads us to an openness to find God in all people and all situations. The love that comes from God is not limited to any one group or class of people. Racism, xenophobia, and all kinds of discrimination can have no part in the vision of Jesus. Any economic system that leaves out people is not part of the vision of Jesus. Any economic system that fails to keep people first is not worthy of our Christian spirit. Pacem in Terris: Peace on Earth Pope John XXIII issued this monumental encyclical 55 years ago on April 11, 1963, as tensions grew between our country and Cuba. With the hard work of diplomacy a nuclear disaster was averted, but nuclear weapons and their proliferation have grown as more nations possess or are presently manufacturing them. The possibility of a world free of nuclear arms may seem increasingly remote, Pope Francis admitted on November 10, 2017. However, he said the world must be genuinely concerned by the catastrophic humanitarian and environmental effects of any employment of nuclear devices. Pope John XXIII 55 years ago called the world to peace and away from armed force or violence. Let us pray that we can be true peacemakers in our world today. Pentecost Sunday Is May 20th Wear Red!
